I buy most of my stuff either second hand or on sale, but I've shied away from multiple units because the pricing seems crazy, even used. I've never spent more than €100 on a loco, or €25 on a coach. To me this looks like a loco and a coach, so £170 seems crazy, especially when there's no lighting. I think you've given it a good and fair review.

Thanks for watching! Yes the prices have gone crazy lately, you can get them a bit less than the 170 RRP I mentioned but still expensive considering it has no lights etc.

One of the cheeky old tooling models in new packaging, I'm afraid! I was looking at the Cross Country livery a few years ago and was put off by the lack of features and none DCC ready. They're severely outdated but were pushed out on to the market long after DCC was the standard. They were actually cheeky enough to do a second run of them in newer liveries, too. Judging by how long it's taken them to get the 158 sorted I can't see any new 170's coming any time soon! Mike.

Yes it’s a new batch, it was on the Bachmann website as “just arrived “ a little while ago. Very cheeky as you say, could do with a new tooling. Thanks for watching 👍🏼

Cheers for the review. Won't be going anywhere near these things thats for sure. An updated model is long overdue, they have served most parts of the country and the actual body itself looks pretty good, even if underneath the surface it does not meet modern standards

I agree with your excellent review Simon, as you said very disappointing no lights fitted to front or rear.

Hi Simon, interesting review which I enjoyed watching. I’ve got the Scotrail 3 car version, with the power car in the middle and the 2 driving cars identical dummies. My experience with this has been very similar to your own. It looks great and is a very reliable runner, but with all the limitations you mentioned - it had to be hardwired to run on DCC, no working lights and lots of painted detail. All in all very similar to the Class 158. Curiously, an upgrade of this model is about to be released, so it will be interesting to compare the old with the new. Hopefully something similar will happen with the 170. Thanks again for an enjoyable video.

Thanks for watching Stewart, yes hopefully my purchase will prompt them to update the class 170, it's usually the way it goes! The 158 may be a possibility for my layout in the right livery, I'll have to take a look 👍

180 ! 😱 Even the other one at £250 even though it's newer. That means a pair is setting you back £500. Crazy! The loco part with this basic detail should be more like £80-100 with £20-25 for the other half.

Yep prices are getting crazy. Remember though I'm quoting the RRP...the retailers usually charge a bit less than RRP 👍

Hi Simon, Good honest review, yes the model is dated, but it does look really good running through Kidderminster! I think the biggest let down for me is the lighting! the gap between the dmu could soon be hidden with a corridor connector, If you look on the bay using this search term, you'll see what I mean " n Gauge br mk3 x10 corridor connectors " Just an idea 😁. All the best Tony.

Cheers Tony, yes the model could really do with an update, I'm sure they'll get round to it at some point.Thanks for the info on the corridor connectors, good idea, I'll take a look 👍

Hi Simon, very good review, I think I might be disappointed if i had one as I think the ends let it down. It did look right though running into Kidderminster and even at £179 which is a tad expensive fits into your fleet nicely, and as you say not much choice. Cheers for now, John

Hi John, yes difficult to recommend this one, it’s due an update I think, not really up to their usual standard. Thanks for watching 👍🏼

Wow, not even any lights? That is taking the mickey. So are you going to get the tiny drill out and add your own LEDs?
@SimonsShed

Yes not great, they really need to update the model. Might try adding LEDs at some point 👍🏼

£179 RRP for this outdated thing?! I got Kato's new ALC-42 train pack for somewhere around £120, it comes with a newly tooled loco fitted with lights and 3 Amtrak Superliner coaches. British N scale modellers deserve so much better than this...
@SimonsShed
@SimonsShed Жыл бұрын
I paid 150 but (just my luck) I’ve seen them as low as 110 since. If that Kato train ran through the station I’m modelling (Kidderminster UK) I’d buy one 👍🏼
