There is a 'guy who runs the band' but he's not in an office with a suit. He's an old school metalhead who tours with them and mops the stage for them when it rains. Name is Key Kobayashi, and he's a legit artist, maybe even a genius, but he chooses not to take the stage himself. He has the vision and he works like hell at the ground level to pull it off.

Yes they are singing live and the band is live. There is also a backing track and BM have a click track in their ears. BM and the Kami Band are fantastic, particularly in the period between their breakout performances in 2013/14 and Yui Mizuno leaving in 2017/18. They hit four years of sheer brilliance where the stage presence of the girls and the Kamis and their fantastic talents meshed to produce something amazing. In this concert Moa and Yui are 15 and Su is 17, so they are still kids, and I'm always surprised by how they can control a crowd of 20000 fans. BM had a tough time after Yui left and performed as a duo for a while with backup dancers and then Covid was a big blow as they couldn't tour, but they are back with a new album called "The Other One", a new member called Momometal, and have just finished a year long world tour where they played at the Roundhouse and in Wolverhampton in the UK. "Road of Resistance" is about fighting and resisting even if you can't see the way ahead and it reminds us that there are things worth fighting for - so it's an appropriate song for the times. It was the song that sold me on BM because I ended it as an emotional wreck. They take you from one pinnacle to another and just keep on going. But for me the real hero of this song is the drummer, Hideki Aoyama, I think this song averages over 200 BPM. I wonder what's the collective number of calories expended by BM and the Kami Band in this performance. The song has a strong "Dragonforce vibe" because Dragonforce's Li and Totman worked on it and play it on the album, but I like this live Kami Band version more. At the end of the crowd "wows" I love the combination of the insanely fast guitar riff and the dance sequence that ends with the girls standing strongly and outlined by the lights, that's where I really get the chills. It shows how well the Babymetal team works to bring together music, singing, dancing and stage and lighting design. Next, maybe a Su solo like "Akatsuki - Budokan Black Night" or "Rondo of Nightmare" from the same concert., or if you are adventurous, "Tales of the Destinies".

And I have witnessed their amazing and authentic live performance at venues 17 times since 2020. (Before BM, I was a stubborn jazz / funk lover). We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.) Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

BABYMETAL believe that if a song sounds too much like one genre, then it's not a BABYMETAL song. You can definitely feel the Power Metal / Speed Metal in this one though. Sam Totman and Herman Li from DragonForce contributed guitar tracks for the studio version of this song. This performance was at Saitama Super Arena (SSA) in January of 2015, with a sold out crowd of over 20,000. BABYMETAL's lead singer, Suzuka Nakamoto first appeared at SSA in 2008 as a member of the J-Pop trio Karen Girl's, when she was 10 years old. She's been back many times since, headlining with BABYMETAL. Guitarists that night were Takayoshi Ohmura and Leda Cygnus. The bassist was BOH, and the drummer was Hideki Aoyama.

The guy who came up with Babymetal was working as a producer with bands, but the company he worked for told him: because demand for bands is so low in the then current Japanese music industry, please work at the kids department. He noticed one 11 year old girl, she was known for good singing in the company, but she had an usual style. She sang very loud. He figured maybe he could combine her loud singing with the loud metal music he loves. Now, in this company their was no interest in doing such a thing, because bands music, including metal music, wasn't at all popular or much financially viable in Japan. So obviously it would be shut down by the company for being a bad idea. He still asked and they didn't want it. So because he was unsure if it even made any sense, "authentic metal music sound with little girls.", he ended up talking to a former CEO and he said: if you don't try it you will forever wonder "what if ?". So he maneuvered himself in a position where he was allowed to do this project with these girls without financial backing from the company. And then asked them again if he was allowed. So in summary Babymetal had no financial backing, they found an audience, with some guerra marketing/world of mouth and just because it's such an off-the-wall idea. Which eventually went viral outside of Japan, which is odd, because not many artists (compared to the size of the Japanese market, second largest in the world) are marketed or have fame outside of Japan.

A lot of people will explain who Babymetal is. I can only tell you that since 1970 I've accumulated hundreds of fantastic records, they're now sleeping at the back of the cabinet. But they are a highly respected phenomenon in Metal and Rock circles by their peers - you don't get to open for , tour with or collaborate with people like Metallica , GunsN'Roses , Red Hot Chill Peppers , Korn , Sabaton , Bring Me The Horizon , Tom Morello , Rob Halford etc etc not to mention having your own sell out world tours and regularly playing to crowds of 20 ,000+ in addition to appearing at some of the world's biggest festivals like Hellfest , Download etc They're not just a gimmick ( although they are certainly different ! ) - 13 years of working their butts off has earned them their deserved place in the world of Metal .

Whether they are filling Saitama SuperArena with 22,000 fans, or a smaller venue in Kansas City, they are awesome.

(2) got my hands on as many Blurays as possible (18 and counting)/ Flew from DC to Japan for their first live performance of 2023, and was running around in a circle pit, twirling a towel in the air... / drove to their Philly live/ and for their last live of 2023 (their 94th of 2023) flew to Madrid. (3) Totally cured me from my pet loss of an 18 year old lovable dog (now I can look at photos and movies with a smile on my face and a strong feeling of gratitude to my dog). Welcome to Babymetal. Been a fan since I saw them live in Germany 2016, I even went to Japan twice to see them live despite the language barrier and saw them in Stockholm and Oslo last year. 👍 👍 BabyMetal began in 2010 there were Suzuka Nakamoto age 12 Moa Kikuchi and Yui Mizuno. Both Moa and Yui were 11 years old. All three girls were friends and classmates who attended an idol group (Sakura Gakuin) founded in 2010 by Amuse Talent Agency for girls 10 to 15. Themed around school life (they attended regular school as well) the girls would learn and train at vocals, dancing, public speaking and etiquette, etc., graduate at age 15 and then move onto whatever entertainment path they chose or that suited their talents. Key Kobayashi was a music producer for Amuse and heard Suzuka sing at age 9 and was impressed with her strong vocals and stage presence. Kobayashi was a fan of heavy metal but believed that the genre had become stale and tired (especially in Japan) with metal bands getting old Kobayashi believed the genre needed to be reborn (BabyMetal means the birth of a new metal genre). Kobayashi felt that Suzuka had the ability to front a metal band and that her vocals and presence could withstand the metal guitars and drums. The fusion of Jpop and Metal began. He placed Moa and Yui as backup singers/dancers and a phenomenon was about to result. In the beginning Amuse showed little interest and the girls had minimal financing. They performed at strip malls and small venues borrowing clothes for shows from friends and family. No money for a real band they had friends dressed in homemade skeleton costumes pretending to play instruments to a backtrack. They quickly became a sensation (these young ladies paid their dues). Amuse saw the potential and in 2012 hired the best session musicians Japan had to offer (The Kami Band) who tours with them today (now includes world class musicians from the USA for tours outside of Asia). My own take is that BM uses processed vocals in their early days, in the same vein as, say, Motley Crue did too. But the older they got (this live performance was from 2015 when the girls were 17 & 15), it's very evident that lead singer Su-metal in particular sang naturally when onstage. Japanese girl singers, whatever their genre, tend to have very clear vocals, which doesn't mesh with Western sensibilities (unless you're into classical pop). BM isn't embarrassed about their idol roots either. In fact, their charms have a lot to do with their musical journey in public since they were tweens. I think traditional metal fans should respect how the genre evolved elsewhere in the world. In BM's case, they emerged at a time (early 2010s) when 'anisong' アニソン (breakneck-speed anime songs), 'vocaloid' ボーカロイド (computer-generated synthesized music), 'girls metal band boom' ガールズ・メタル・バンド・ブーム (self-explanatory), even to some extent 'decora kei' デコラ系 (street fashion, adopted more by some fans) were all hitting the cultural mainstream. BM belongs to a diverse talent agency, & their music producers (having worked with other artistes) would inevitably incorporate elements of those external aesthetics into the band's sound & image. It's core to BM's 'Japan-ness", even as their international popularity & collaborations are pushing them to conform with Western motifs. If BM's crowd participation impresses you, look up Hatsune Miku's live concerts from earlier that decade lol. Is this typical of their music? Yes and No. Their music is almost always high energy and positive. No two Babymetal songs sound alike, so always be prepared to expect the unexpected.

Babymetal is still going strong. They did a world tour last year and are booking dates for 2024. It’s easy to look at videos from years ago and think they might not last, but they have a rare gift to perform, and have a lot of talent with them and around them. Take a look at something newer and see where they are now after more than ten years performing, Monochrome at the PIA arena is a good example.

No, Key Kobayashi is or better was the soul behind the Band. An old Metalhead who wanted to get the rather stale japanese Metal out of its corner. So he got the idea to use the idol Scene and fuse it with metal. But he was only for a small part of his time a guy at a desk. Instead he looked for a voice that he would need. At first these girls were not interested, so he went withbthem to metal concerts To givevthem a better idea what he wanted of them. He had to start with them in the idol corner. But step after step he added elements like a live Band. And yes, they normally sing life, but the Background girls where only described as scream and dance, that meant background chorus that is in fact mostly on the backing tracks, but in parts their mics take over, since they are also the dancing part. No, they are not quite zhe same lineup since Yui had terminate her contract due to health reasons. Su and Moa decided to continue as possible to the 10th birthday. But as the time came Su and Moa decided to continue with a new third member Momo Metal. She was also the most active Dancer in the last few Years. And in fact they were in the last year on a oretty hectic World Tour, not really with the old Kami Band since zheir Band Members are too famous in their own, but with a second band of American Musicians that were originally founded to support their US and European concerts, but in reality they pretty much replaced the Kami Band. Before they were accepted they had to prove their abilities in Japan in concerts against the Kami Band so that the crew and musicians and the girls got a feel of each other. So in fact, yes they are still active and in a position to continue for Years to come. Originally the girls were taught what zhey had to do but if they wanted to do more, they could. So Moa has now more or lesd the whole dancing part under her control and Su also started to write her first own lyrics. They have pretty much taken over, probably with the expectation that Key wont have all the time for Babymetal but will have to take more time for their second unit, thst was originally planned to replace them but due to the fact that they proved their capabilities (92 concerts with an audience of 250.000 people and their audience is pretty unusual 40 % female and all ages from 5 to 85.)

Great first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊 First off I can confirm you are not the first person to underestimate BABYMETAL (and many completely mistakenly dismissed them as a gimmick or joke) after watching their 'Gimme Chocolate' video back in 2014. That was the video that went viral, but mainly for the shock value. It is not their best by a long way, but it is their most viewed song and they still play it in most of their concerts (the official video is 10 years old now, it was filmed in December 2013) it is great fun and it always gets a great reception from the crowd - and you wouldn't believe the mosh pits it starts, but you will struggle to find another song they've done that sounds quite like it. BABYMETAL were formed in 2010, not so much manufactured as precision engineered around the talents of the girls (and absolutely not a boardroom produced thing by a bunch of suits out to make easy money - the agency actually thought it was a stupid idea with no chance of success and they provided no extra funding. It was only because they started as a sub unit of a bigger group they had put together to coach the most talented girls on their books in all aspects of entertainment that they allowed it to continue since there was no financial risk and it wouldn't last long as far as they were concerned). They are the brainchild and passion project of their metalhead producer Kei Kobayashi who was inspired to try this mad idea of fusing metal with JPop aesthetics and vocals after seeing lead singer Su-metal with her previous group and being so impressed by her vocal talents and stage presence. He thought it might just inject some youth into and help rejuvenate the stagnant metal and rock music scene - as it was in Japan at that time. The three members were aged 12, 11 and 11. We have watched them grow up to become one of the very best live acts on the planet. BABYMETAL are Su-metal (lead vocalist), Moametal and Momometal (in charge of backing vocals, harmonies and mainly hyping and involving the crowd with their choreo). The original third member Yuimetal last performed in October 2017 and was absent for 12 months for health reasons until she announced (in Oct 2018) she was still not fully recovered and would be leaving the band. Su and Moa continued as a duo for 4 or 5 years supported from 2019 by 3 dancers who would take turns dancing in the third spot until 1st April 2023 when one of those dancers, Momoko, was finally revealed as the new official third member (now known as Momometal). This video for 'Road of Resistance' (and yes it was all live including Yui's and Moa's backing vocals) was filmed at their concert in January 2015 at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan. That was over 20,000 people completely under the control of Su, Yui and Moa - Su was only just turned 17, Yui and Moa still only 15 at that time. Herman Li and Sam Totman from DragonForce did the guitar arrangements for this song (it is the only one they were involved in). BABYMETAL are like nothing you will have seen or heard before, they brought a fusion of great metal instrumentals coupled with JPop hooks, melodies and aesthetics to create their very own sub-genre ... and they have continued to develop and evolve from those beginnings. They don't limit themselves to any one main style or genre and you won't be able to pigeonhole or put them in any one box like you can with virtually every other band in the world, they are one of a kind and they invented their own genre and style that nobody has been able to copy successfully (some have tried, none came close) including bringing choreographed dancing to metal (but not as you might know it from pop acts where it is nearly always used just to fill the stage or give you almost naked girls (and boys) to look at to take your mind off often bland music). BABYMETAL's choreo helps with interpreting the song - a lyric or the meaning etc, but it is mainly designed to involve and lead the crowd, to give them their cues when to jump, shout, pump their fists, chant and so on. BABYMETAL are complete masters of crowd control and crowd involvement. They are supported in live shows by the Kami Band - some of Japan's very best session musicians, each one of them a world class instrumentalist. They do swap in and out depending on their availability, but the same hard core of about 6 musicians have played the vast majority of concerts since March 2014. In this performance they were Leda Cygnus and Takayoshi Ohmura on guitars, BOH with his 6 string bass and Hideki Aoyama on drums. They first appeared in October 2012 and were phased in playing a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows until they became the full time support for all live shows from March 2014. In 2019 the Kami Band of the West (American musicians Chris Kelly, CJ Masciantonio, Clint Tustin and Anthony Barone) were introduced and they have been supporting BABYMETAL on their more extended foreign tours since then. They have nearly 70 songs now, every one of them is different from the last. They have songs in virtually every metal genre but will mix in other musical styles and genres with the metal, often when you least expect it. Some songs lean towards their pop roots others are just good hard metal and they do everything in between - so if you don't like one song no problem - try another, the chances are you'll love it. For another good early song try 'Headbanger' live at the Legend 1997 concert (actually from December 2013, 1997 was Su-metal's birth year, Legend 1997 was her 16th birthday celebration). You can find high quality videos posted by Gans Tomas or abr metal for that one. Alternatively look for 'Monochrome' live at the PIA MM Arena BABYMETAL Begins, Clear Night and see what they were doing in April last year just before they set off on their world tour (over 90 concerts all around the USA and Canada, SE Asia, Australia and Europe). I'm sure you will get a couple of lists of songs - basically you can't go wrong (you already heard 'Gimme Chocolate' so no need to repeat that now - maybe revisit it after a few more songs, but find a good live performance rather than watch the official video). This band comes with a huge following and I am sure you will get a flood of comments . Here is some advice imo try to take the journey with this band go back to 2013 2014 live performances not compilations. Start at the beginning and work your way to the present It was one hell of a ride for me I am 62 years old and found this band about 3+ years ago. trust me start from the beginning.

It's unfortunate that Gimme Choc. was your first experience - but it's common (it IS a great track but not one for first exposure - I don't know why ppl recommend it as a first choice for potential metaheads) - but this group is utterly amazing in almost every way. Corporate - maybe? But the end result - if that's what corporate bands can manage then regardless the end result is amazing - and they are VERY well loved by their fans, and there's no denying the talent of everyone from the stage and lighting managers to the singers and the fans (an essential part of BM) - and the exuberant positivity they radiate. Good reaction and more please - they always surprise and every track is very different. Knowing a little about their history may help you appreciate them - there's a video out there called something like "a brief guide?" I think. oh...MORE please 😁

This went so far that they developed their anti devil face to an symbol of female empowerment., ut this song is proof why Su can be called a general. She doesn't order their audience to sing with them. They simply make it clear that the audience wnts together withvtem. But what fails in this video how deep Moa and nowadays Momo are imvolved in thos procesd. As they said this girls lead us to places, we never dreamed of before, while rhe girks answered that they always felt protected.
