This short video series will help you diagnose just about any fault on a graphics card. This is not exactly a repair guide, it is a methodical sequence of tests that, if you follow them, will show you what part of the circuit is faulty. You can make almost all of these tests using just a multimeter. You can then decide if the fault is something you can repair yourself, but you will know what is wrong with the graphics card. I've split this video up into several parts. In this part we learn what to look for while making visual checks, and then take some resistance readings which will quickly tell us if the graphics card has a very common fault.

I have not fully watched all of them, but made it so far to number 4. I would like to thank you for these. Though I had already found the fault in the gpu I was repairing, it helped me rule out any other issues on the gpu. Saved one from the landfill. This guy is awesome.

An excellent introduction to graphics cards, even though I doubt I will ever try and repair one I have always wondered about their layout. Your practical step through is most absorbing. I look forward to the subsequent videos.😊

Please be sure to tell us if you are using diode or ohms mode each time you change a check or operation. "Again we are still in diode mode with black on the ground" or " We are still in diode mode or Change to ohms mode and we will check". This is only as I was not sure if you were still in diode mode when you turned the board over. Just trying to learn! Thanks for the video.

Great video as always Richard, thanks for creating a comprehensive guide for GPU repair. I was watching your videos for some time now, you inspired me to try some repair myself. Just now I was checking not working GPU (GTX 980 TI) I bought on eBay, it has some blown fuses on 3.3V and 12V. While checking data lanes, 9-th lane from both side reads a bit different, front ones reads about 0.77 but one side of the 9-th - only 0.64, from the back all reads about 0.64 but also one side of the 9-th - only 0.59. Is this enough indication of shorted core? I'm not finding shorts on any coil.
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair 10 ай бұрын
I would say the 9th lane reading 0.77/0.64 is enough difference to be suspicious, if the graphics card powers up but does not detect it could well be a damaged GPU core that is causing the problem. Have you tried the card on a single lane mining adapter? I would give it a go and see what happens. Of course if the GPU silicon has internal problems, it may still not detect. Keep watching as I will go much more into step by step detail iin the next episodes

Hi! My desktop pc graphics card, MSI GeForce GTX 1060 3GB has an issue: it cannot detect vram, so can't work as expected. I measured resistance at the PCIe 6 pin connector as you did, and while two grounds are ok, the center ground measures 92.4 kilo ohm. Could this be the issue? What is solution? I can't trace the path, i lose it. Can i short the three grounds together for testing purpose? Is it safe?

Hi i used to work for a computer repair shop and i asked my boss at the time if i could take this broken gtx 970 home to see if it is repairable and he said sure. So i brought it home and put it in my rig to test. It booted into bios fine and stayed on while it was there. And it did boot into windows but it would only stay stable for like maybe a anywhere from a few minutes to secs. I have torn the card down a few times to make sure it is clean and i even tried the oven method and i also did probe it with a multimeter and everything seemed from for resistance wise (because i dont have the proper tools to test it while it is on for voltage). I had it work long enough to try and install the drivers for it, but it ultimately crashed and restarted the computer. I dont think it is repairable, but if it could be, what should i try to do?

would it be possible for a gpu with some corrosion near one of the memory module to work until you clean it with alcohol. I cleaned the back of a gt 710 and noticed the green corrosion very close to one of the memory. After cleaning its artifacting

Hello and thank you for your informative videos. I have a :INNO3D Geforce RTX 2060 2060182-6G PG161 63-1ADT06H1 K A9 45 A3 the 12v is shorted to ground and there is only one 12v supply connector on the board. Im looking for mosfet replacements but cant seem to find any. Where do you get yours? the mosfets markings are: AL00 9Y 1F Some other mosfets are on the board but i think the AL00 's are the VRM circuit. Other mosfets on the board: QA311 926 09R GS9219 0NVM

4:33, That top-right mounting screw looks quite crusty, especially at the top right next to the diagonally to top-right pads for the unpopulated capacitor C2761. At 23:23, I might have misheard you but while measuring the voltage you say Watt instead instead of Volt, twice.

I'm not really that familiar with graphics cards - can you please explain what a mining adapter is all about?
@ser_olmy
@ser_olmy 10 ай бұрын
The so-called "mining adapters" are risers/extenders commonly used in cryptomining setups, where multiple GPUs are connected to one system in order to solve cryptographic hashes as fast as possible. As you usually cannot plug more than at most two GPUs into the PCI-e slots on a motherboard, these adapters are used to mount the GPUs somewhere else, even externally to the case. As PCI-e bandwith isn't a big issue when doing cryptomining, these adapters usually have a full (16-lane) PCI-e slot at one end, but just a single-lane PCI-e plug-in adapter at the other. This works because all PCI-e compliant devices are required to function (albeit slower) with only one lane connected. It also means these "mining adapters" are ideal for doing repair work, as you can easily connect any GPU to any PCI-e slot without having to plug it directly into the motherboard. You can even have the GPU running while lying disassembled on the bench, as long as you take reasonable measures to prevent overheating.

Hie Richard ,I like your videos because of the use of pen and paper .The pcie lanes capacitors ,why are they connected in series with the power line ,not across power and ground. If series what is the use of them ,since this is a DC circuit,Thank you're
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair 10 ай бұрын
The PCIe lane capacitors are not in series with the power line, they are in the LVDS (low voltage differential signal) data lines. As the data is transmitted at very high frequencies it easily passes through the capacitors, but they block any DC voltage differential between the motherboard and the graphics card which would easily damage the input circuitry that receives the LVDS signals.
