I named my daughter for this song as well. When she was 9, we learned the 1st time they played Althea for a live audience was on her birthday, but 14 years before she was born!

To me this is the most mysterious, entrancing Althea. Aimless, disorganized feel and yet.. Weir steps in, plays an unusually and delightfully active part. The band recognizes the meditative mood and keeps it going.

I now found a performance from 1980 that is very similar, but more structured (found on the net only labeled Crazy Night 1980) This loose, early performance is great.

Especially love Jerry's guitar on this version. But have yet to find a better one than 81 at the Garden.

Despite a Franklin's Tower quote ony arm and an unabiding love for Bertha, this is my favorite Grateful Dead song.

Me & some buddies of mine had advance tickets to the prior night’s (12/30) show. There was something about the look on Garcia’s face after the Brokedown Palace encore that night that beckoned us for a consecutive night- which we’d never done before. Fortunately, at that point in time, it was still somehow possible to show up the day of the show and buy a ticket at the window, provided you showed up early enough. Which we did. John Cippolina played, as he did when they closed Winterland the year before. What can say? It was a lucky place to be.

We were there. It was Henry J Kaiser back in the day. I remember one time getting there real early. There was a craft fair/market in the little park across from the front door. There were big PA speakers out on the entry and they were playing the Revolver album. Great memories.

Well clearly the band and Jerry specifically liked the idea of the music never stopping and this thing going forever allowing taping of their shows .I also believe he had a good understanding of where technology was going with the internet and knew we'd be watching and listening to his music on platforms like this in the future.

The other day my guitar prodigy nephew starts bagging Jerry. I chuckled. I'm 40, he's my 21 year old nephew, watch ya gunna do? I jokingly asked him if he could play modally or knew his circle of fifths. If us guitarist types are theoretical mathematicians ( in a way we are) Jerry was like Albert Newton Hawking. Get my drift?

Part if the fun of the dead. Makes them hard to play with others especially if everyone has different versions they like

Eh, I don’t know man. The arrangement feels kinda cluttered with two bridges.

@@steinbauge4591 They obviously decided against it for whatever reason. They have done this type of thing with several songs, making changes over the years, changing the arrangements, keys, and lyrics. I’m not saying it was bad. There’s nothing wrong with trying something or deciding to do it differently. After listening to Althea so many times in its final format coming across this one took me by surprise. Good stuff.
