I was at this show (which is why its so awesome to have on DVD). I was on Jerry's side about 20 rows back and when Phil and Jerry locked in, it was rolling thunder - just an unbelievable primal sound that melted your face, caved in your chest and made you see God. I miss the Dead...

Have had most of the albums since forever, but this came out when I was relocating out of the bay area and never caught up to it until recently. Love almost every tune, especially here where Jerry blows almost all the lyrics of the second half. "Don't save your breath to waste your face." Classic.

Absolutely one of my favorite Jerry songs, just love the lyrics. This is one song I don't remember if I ever saw live, hope I did! Always regret not keeping all my ticket stubs. I was so young and having the time of my life, didn't realize how lucky I was to be part of this at the time.

I was fortunate enough to be introduced to the Grateful Dead at the Omni in Atlanta on 3/27/89 as a high school senior. Built to Last followed Half Step and Walk-in’ Blues. By that time I was hooked and a lifelong fan of the Dead. Late 80’ and early 90’s with Jerry and Brent I consider to be the standard.

There are times that you can beckon There are times when you must call You can shake a ton of reckoning But you can't shake it all There are times when I can help you out And times that you must fall There are times when you must live in doubt And I can't help at all Three blue stars / Rise on the hill Say no more, now / Just be still All these trials / Soon be past Look for something / Built to last Wind held by the collar Got a cloud held by the breeze You can walk on coals of fire But sometimes you must freeze There are times when you offend me And I do the same to you If we can't or won't forget it, then I guess we could be through One blue star / Sets on the hill Call it back / You never will One more star / Sinks in the past Show me something / Built to last. Built to last till time itself Falls tumbling from the wall Built to last till sunshine fails And darkness moves on all Built to last while years roll past Like cloudscapes in the sky Show me something built to last Or something built to try There are times when you get hit upon Try hard but you cannot give Other times you'd gladly part With what you need to live Don't waste the breath to save your face When you have done your best And even more is asked of you Let fate decide the rest. All the stars / Are gone but one Morning breaks / Here comes the sun Cross the sky now / Sinking fast Show me something / Built to last

This song is electric. Everything is so lively and on point. I really love the vocals and the tight, strong guitar play. I've had this show on VHS going back years, used to crank up the TV on the stereo speakers and annoy the shit out of the neighbors blasting it all day long over the summers. Such a great song!

I agree with "theSW1111" without the dead, I don't know where I'd be today... and probably wouldn't want to know. The Dead, and nowadays, GD tribute bands have changed so many people's lives... it's just incredible to enjoy and feel the love from all the people around you. Thanks to them, a lot of us are on a better path than we were, and I for one am eternally grateful :D Rock on fams!

Hi. Yeah we call that zen. But this song is notorious for being extremely difficult. It is the one son ai have begged Hunter to go back in time on and rewrite. Too many stars going to many places it's confusing as fuck. We never nailed this lyrically but hey- you're right. There are some Terrapin lyric changes that just blow my mind. Peace and love.

Brent touched so many of us, It's not even a Brent tune but there are multiple comments about Brent. I listen to this album alot and with my 3 year old daughter , I will take you home, means so much, but as a 17 year old punk I always skipped it...but I get it...love..true love. Brent always felt like the outsider, but man he was always loved.

There are times when you must beckon, There are times when you must fall. You can take a lot of wrecking, But you can't take it all. There are times when i can help you out, And times when you must fall. There are times when you must live in doubt, And i can't help at all. Two blue stars, shine o'er the hill. Plead no more, now just be still. Through the night, now safely there. Show me something built to last. Been held by the fire, Yes and i'm, held by the ring. You can walk on balls of fire, But sometimes you might bleed. There are times when i have begged you And you do the same to me. If you can't or won't admit it, At least we pulled you through. Three blue stars, set o'er the hill. Call them back; you never will. All these trials, soon be dead. We all need something built to last. Built to last 'till time of seven, Falls tumbling from the sky. Built to last 'till lightness fades, And darkness falls on all. Built to last 'till years roll back Our couch perched in the sky Show me something different, Or something built to try. There are times when you get hit up on, Try hard but you cannot give. Other times, you'd gladly go With what you need to give. Don't be afraid to save your face, When you have done your best Now i won't forget, Next day try the rest. All the stars, are gone but one. Morning dreams, we found the sun. Show me something built to last Two blue stones, shine o'er the hill. Call it back; you never will All these trials, now are dead. Show me something built to last. All the stars, are gone but one. Morning dreams. here comes the sun. Through the night, now sinking fast. Show me something built to last.

I love Jerry and I love the dead. Their music was built to last and undoubtedly it will. I see young kids today wearing Grateful Dead clothing all the time (granted, I do live in Humboldt county). I think the fact that kids still stumble on to the Dead and they enjoy their music (and what they stand for) is great. The Grateful Dead will go down in history right along side The Beatles as the greatest bands formed during the hippie revolution era. Both these bands have had lasting impacts on both, music and culture, I believe they always will. When the children of the future look back at the 1960's and 70's with a sense of wonder, they will be looking at the Grateful Dead skull with lightning and The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour or Seargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album (when they watch the "I am the Walrus" video, they will know LSD played a major role, but surely they won't truly fathom this role). Their music will go on forever as a textbook example of "hippie music", their music will last, until some far-in-the-future, new age communist/socilalist fascists start burning textbooks that is.

Ok, ok, ok. Homage to Pigpen, etc... but Brent was awesome. I'm shocked anyone who calls themselves a DH or even a casual fan would have anything bad to say about Brent. It's like The Allman Brothers and Michael McDonald had a kid. The Dead weren't just a band, they were an experience; every band member that changed out added something different and shaped the experience. Just go with it, guys!
