After dominating the smartphone market in the 2000s, Blackberry is sailing into oblivion. Their devices will stop working on January 4th - one day after their rival Apple hit $3 trillion in market cap. Palki Sharma traces the tale of two brands.

Most company fails: -When they don't change their products & adopt new technology. -Being too proud and rigid to ignore the new competition. -They get content with their achieved customer base and doesn't mind loosing their customer's to a competition, it's the point where fall of the company starts.

I remember in the early 2010s, owning a blackberry was a status symbol. People showing off their BB Pins like it was their identity. And all my friends had it. I'd still rather have a blackberry. I can't stand touchscreens. Unfortunately, the app industry isn't built around that format, and they have some other shortcomings, so I no longer own one. But I still don't buy cars with touchscreens. Whoever thought that was the best control system for a moving vehicle or even worse a boat bouncing along the waves was cracked out of their damn minds. Physical buttons have this amazing feature of being able to find them by feel rather than having to stare them down, and of consistently working the first time you press them. They're perfect for any situation in which you should not be staring at a touchscreen, such as every single second you are operating a motor vehicle.

Same. I'd rather have a Blackberry or Palm Treo. I also hate the touch screens, and ALSO avoid them for cars. Absolutely ridiculous. You can touch buttons w/o taking your eyes off the road. If it's windy, road bumpy, lots of traffic, you can still safely press buttons w/o risking an accident. I'm sorry Palki, I love your reporting, but it's the touch screens that are glitzy, shiny, gimmicky, not the Blackberry keyboards.

It was still the best business tool phone I ever owned and I still miss mine. I have always believed that it was actually killed because it refused to reveal its encryption key to the three letter agencies in the US. The iPhone is still a children’s toy by comparison. In real business you just don’t need an app to superimpose cat ears on your head! You do need something that blended seamlessly with your Microsoft office environment. RIP BB. As an old BB 9000, Q10, and Keyone user, I think the features of the new 5G Blackberry must be the following: Key2-type keyboard, robust frame, long-life quick charging battery, Blackberry Secure Operating System (with compatibility to Google Play apps), clever and ergonomic facilities, Contacts app with more manipulation functions and MS Outlook compatibility (like that of BB Bold 9000). The camera must have a stabilizer, support slow motion, but no need for tons of MB picture resolutions (4K is enough). No need for fancy curved displays. Must have an easy memory insertion slot, stereo speakers (like those fantastic mini ones of BB 9000) as well as programmable notification profiles (like those of BB 9000). The back skin must be soft and leather-like. Finally, the price must not exceed the cheapest iPhone one!!!! This will boost the BB sales, hoping for a victorious come-back.

Blackberry had at least two touch screen phones: Strom and Storm II, which was totally ignored in this report. Also BB had few other issues which were not mentioned here: 1. Installation of 3rd part app. 2. Very costly BB Messenger Service. 3. Absence of dual sim facility. Absence of Dual sim smart phone was one of the major factors for Nokia to collapse and when they realized the same, it was too late. Even Apple had realized the market for dual sim phones long ago and it started allowing Indian user to use eSIM as a secondary sim (provided it is supported by your service provider as well). Further when both Nokia and BB had tried to implement Android OS, they never realized that they are no more the market leaders. The kind of phones Samsung used to offer in 20k, same or even infirior configuration phones they used to offer within 35k to 40k range.

All my friends and colleagues used to line up At the store when newer ones came out. I have used every single one. It worked well, we could type really fast. BBM was ahead of time those days. Email on phone unheard in 2004. It was great. I really miss it. O whoa. I started as an associate and left as a manging partner and honestly couldn't do it without my Blackberry. Had great built quality, you can run a car over and would still work. Gone are the golden days with my BB. Everyone had it, especially downtown TO. Loved it.

Back then Blackberry phones were for grown-ups and professionals. iPhones were for yuppies, college students and teenagers. Today, iPhone has increasingly become the business phone of choice. I still love my past experiences with Blackberry.. my last device was a Q10 running BB OS10. To me it's still the best mobile OS ever in terms of multi-tasking, stability and security. The QWERTY keyboard was a joy to use with hardly any typing mistakes and I could type with its keyboard faster than most touchscreen keyboards. Goodbye, Blackberry. You'll always have a dear place in my heart.

For me I personally like physical qwerty keyboard with touchscreen. I have BB classic. But the only problem is OS is obsolete and poor performing hardware. If they launch bb classic with latest android with good hardware i will definitely buy it. Unihertz company is doing that but it is not available in india.

Palki all that you said is true, however you missed out on the last straw that crippled Blackberry for good. It was in 2011 when under sea cables got cut & disrupted RIM's entire services across most part of the globe. That's when the remaining professionals on BB shifted to other smartphone options. That was the last nail in the coffin....

I liked blackberry phone and was late adopting iPhone. I was wrong about iPhone but fortunately, I was not the decision maker in Blackberry. This is the biggest challenge of top management, it is not them dictate the markets, it is ability to sense the market pulses that matters. Not what the top management thinks. Oil companies particularly ExxonMobil are now at the crossroads on their organizations and energy transition. We should wait and see if they make the right decision.

QWERTY still has an, albeit small, market. It was the lacking apps, no touch screen and tiny screens with the annoying track pad that sealed BlackBerry’s fate for me. Sure, BlackBerry Bold had touch screen functionality at the time but the keyboard still took up most of the phone’s real estate. By the time the Q10, Z30 and Classic came around and fixed these issues, it was too late.

First it was Nokia, everybody HAD TO have a 3310, it was probably the largest selling phone in the world, maybe even of all time, but Nokia like Blackberry refused to change. Whoever the exec was at Nokia that insisted they stick with Symbian, made A BIG mistake, and his head should have rolled! The rest of the world jumped onto the Android train, and it went steaming ahead of the competition. The Symbian app store was an absolute ghost town in comparison to Google Play that was growing at a rate of knots. Nokia initially copied Blackberry with phones like the E70/71/72 etc, but it was Android they should have been looking to, instead they insisted on clinging to Symbian. All those who didn't adopt the mighty 'Droid, fell by the wayside.

I didn't bought blackberry back then.. hearing the brand made it synonymous to Burberry. Nokia N91 or the N Series was more popular back in the day.. then switched to iPhone. when Android became stable & became a lot more flexible than the IOS (jailbreaking iOS made iphone a lot flexible back then), I switched to OnePlus
