I realize this is old but don't stick Java fern in the substrate , crazy glue the Rhizome to driftwood or a rock , they won't grow if the roots are buried.

Good tips on easy plants. I can recommend (no CO2, low light): Cryptocoryne (various species, wendtii is OK), Ludwigia repens (very easy stem plant), Vallisneria sp., Ceratophyllum sp., Rotala rotundifolia, Hydrocotyle leucocephala and finally Hydrocotyle tripartita or Micranthemum umbrosum for easy carpeting. To plant your wood, use some Anubias sp., Java ferns, various mosses (Christmas moss or Java moss are OK) and you're golden :) If you like floating plants, use Pistia (I don't recommend duckweed - grows too fast and makes the tank look messy). Beware: I don't recommend Ceratopteris sp. as it is a terrible plant to mix with anything else because it just sucks up all the ions from water INSTANTLY, simply making them unavailable for other plants, which results in algae outbreak.

I've tried many of the common aquarium plants but bought some hornwort a week ago. Had some of the pine leaves fall off at first and I thought I made a mistake getting it but how wrong I was as it has settled and it's growing well! I just wedged it between plants/decor and I have to say the fish/shrimp really like this super plant!!

Hi Fran, I think your live stock stocking levels look good. The one plant in that group that may get too large for the tank is the sword. If you look at our Peacock Gudgeon tank in our last fish room tour: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9qDarqG36u2dqs.html it now takes up almost half of a 20 long! A 5.5 isn't very deep and we've had really good luck with Finnex Stingray lights kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mcpmdZhjutTenmg.html . Not sure if you are using root tabs and liquid fertilizers but the val and water sprite grow very quickly, but also die quickly without sufficient nutrient levels kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLtoq9p9s-C0nZc.html . Hope this helps!

Jason, what live plants would you suggest to put in a quarantine or hospital tank?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 6 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting question J. It depends on what meds you are using in that tank. Most live plants can't take a lot of the meds used to treat disease. If I was going to put live plants in a quarantine tank I would add something that floats so I can get it out of the tank if I have to treat the tank for disease - maybe some Hornwort, Guppy Grass or even float some Wisteria? The other option is to tie some Anubias to a rock or wood and you could remove that if needed?

It might help, but light intensity is going to play a role as well. Almost all my LEDs have a white/red/blue combo. I’ve found a lot of the floating plants grow fast and die fast if they don’t have enough nutrients so I usually use a liquid fertilizer once a week.

Thinking of changing sand substrate to aquasoil e.g. Fluval Stratum before I start planting. I have danios (leopard/zebra) in my 20 gallon. I have found a few things with BBA (we have it in some of our tanks). If I control the amount of nitrate in the tank it's present, but seems to find a happy medium - not overgrowing. I have found really fast growing plants like hornwort will sometimes out-compete it for nutrients. I have seen Florida Flag Fish and Siamese Algae Eaters pick at it too. It's mostly about controlling nutrients in the water (you may have to cut back on liquid ferts).

Hi, you forgot to mention the Latin name for guppy grass. I googled it , but unfortunately I can't get in (web)shops the Netherlands. I really like the way it looks. By the way, do you use liquid CO2 like easy carbo to make up a bit for having no regular CO2. I do use easy carbo at the moment, because I don't use CO2, but I would rather not because of the ingredients. It is such agressive stuff. You say the plants use nitrates, but you don't talk about phosphates. In my tank the nitrate is 0 when I don't add it myself, but my phosphate level is 1ppm for the most part. How is this possible? Don't the plants use phosphates? I feed not even one tablet per week to my group of 10 pygmae corydoras and twice a week something for my Japonica shrimps. I do weekly 20% waterchanges and gravelclean my substrate. Do you have an explanation? Kind regards, Gerda

Awesome questions! They do use phosphate, but not in the same concentrations as nitrate. I don't use CO2 liquid ferts because they are really just algaecides, they don't really supply CO2 to autotrophs.
