I remind when I was about 7or 8 my father set up and aquarium the had a treasure chest with a lid the would open a close by the bubbles accumulating up the lid it would open the big air bubble would rise out and the lid would go closed, he also a a deep sea diver in then and bubbles came out of the helmet. I remembered watching those bubbles and chest opening and closing for long periods of time. It amazed me being a kid. I didn't understand the physics of it all didn't care back they but I thought I was the greatest thing. It not my cup a tea now but with kids the a amazed by the imagination of it all. And that inspired a lifetime appreciation for tropical fish noe at age 69. When Joanna said treasure chest that memory filled my thoughts. Thanks to my Dad, my desire for fish keeping is still alive within me to this very day.

My absolute favorite thing about this channel is how much it’s geared toward “fish health and happiness comes first, but otherwise do whatever you want with your tank.” It takes so much pressure off of the hobby since so many other fish channels can be very intimidating!

The best thing Joanna has ever said in any video....#10 Do what you want. Having fun is what it's all about. My favourite tank isn't the all singing all dancing biotope that took me ages to do. It's the 20 gallon where I used blue gravel, white sand, some resin palm trees, beach huts and sail boats...and I created a desert island scene.😊

Botanicals are something that can look great in an aquascape, but they do break down over time and those broken bits of leaves can be annoying during a gravel vac. Great video! I think my tanks have become somewhat more utilitarian over time as I have gained more experience with my fish and the way I have aquascaped their tanks. Aquascaping, though, is what makes fish keeping fun and interesting.

This is a wonderful video. My first tank was the basic 55g which is very difficult to aquascape due to the narrow dimensions front to back. (The next one was a 40 breeder-great for aquascaping!!) The 55 didn’t offer a lot of space to move things around, particularly when I fell in love with a larger piece of driftwood. I also learned to look at the tank from the side to see how much space the fish had to swim and room for the plants.

This was a great 10 things!! Great points on things to consider before setting up an aquascape or a tank! Thank you guys for always taking the time to help all of us in our hobby! Things I have definitely learned are being careful with betta fins and making sure things aren't big or small enough for fish to get stuck in them (chola wood.. I have no idea how to spell that) I had a white skirt tetra get wedged into a tiny piece of chola wood... to this day I still can't figure out how it got in there... it was really little. I literally had to break it to get him out and the fish is still alive 👍 I hope you guys are having a great week! Thank you always for sharing!!🙏🤗🌿🐟🌿💚

I love this video! I just redid my Betta tank. I have always kept Goldfish before this. I never really did much aquascaping with them. This time I decided to try a Betta and aquascape with live plants. Well, many of my plants died. Then I set up a tank that was OK, but I wasn't crazy about it. I looked at many aquascapes on the internet that kept Bettas in them. I found two l liked. Then I used the idea I really liked from one and two things I really liked from another tank and put those ideas together for my aquascape. I have a mix of live plants and fake plants. Plus, rocks and a fish store decoration. I am now in love with this aquascape! My fish, Monet seems quite pleased too. He really explored when I completed the "renovation" of his home. I also have discovered that like Joanna, one Betta is not enough! I now have a second Betta named Buddy. Oh, and thank you for the advice about really thinking about adding shrimp to my betta tank. Monet for sure would have eaten them! I did get a nitrite snail and Monet bugged the heck out of it. I had to remove the snail to keep Monet from killing it. I have put the snail in with Buddy and they are happy together. Sorry this was such a long comment. You two are the best. ❤🐟

Mbuna mock me by repeatedly digging up my struggling vallisneria from their sand substrate. Vals super-glued to stones gradually lose their grip, so next up is fishing line. Java fern and anubias mostly lose their bouts with intermittent diatoms. These fish always seemed to value the cover of artificial plants, but there are many benefits of real plants. Thus, I persist. I have never before experienced beard envy. 🤜🤛 Another wonderful video.

As I do agree with this video in regards to fish keeping, in my opinion, aquascaping has more to do with the scape itself. I think that is the main focus of a true aquascape, then once that is complete you pick your fish based on what you built. That is unless you are designing a particular scape for a specific type of fish like most chiclids for instance. I see true aquascapes having the tank itself be prioritized vs picking fish first. Just depends though in all honesty whom you are and such. I am one to design first then pick what fish or shrimp I want to go in afterwards based on my composition or layout. Me personally...I also find the word aquascape used when (if we are being honest with ourselves lol) it really just a boosted up fish tank. Aquascaping imo is were the scape is the focus of the tank, wether it's a nature style, black water, or whatever...throwing some plants rocks &/or wood in a tank shouldn't be considered aquascaping imo...again, this is all just personal opinion. Your channel is great for all kinds of fish keeping advice and such and I have watched a ton of videos from your channel, but what I consider aquascaping is something like Green Aqua or George Farmer.

In a tank with multies, will they dig under the rocks or just move the loose gravel around? Trying to figure out if I will be able to put some bigger river rocks in the aquarium.

My plan because i'm in a wheelchair is to do mostly artificial but add some moss balls and live floating plants to help with water quality. I guess though if you do a biotope with the right fish you are guaranteed to have success as it would suit the fish better. I wonder what you think about 10 Espei rasboras, 6 albino Cory cats and 3 Nerite snails.

I noticed that you have several beautiful tanks with extensive decorations. Whenever you perform a Water Change, how do you clean the substrate? Do you have to remove all of the decorations, do you just clean around the decorations, or do you ignore cleaning the substrate?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
Usually I just clean around them. If it's something that can be removed easily once in a while I will pick it up and siphon under it as well.

Gonna do you guys in the comments a favor, when planting some plants especially dwarf hair grass and other carpeting plants, plant them before you put water in the tank, just use moist substrate, because then you can pack your plants tighter without the risk of them all popping up and stressing you out... (I am not a pro or good at explaining things so do some research on how to do this)

I love your scapes. I am not much of an aqua scape. I have 16 nano size tanks. Keeping them clean is easy for me. I only use aquarium coop easy planters and plastic plants abs a few rocks and decorations. It’s easier for me to manage algae and vac the tanks. I clean all my tanks twice a week and do water changes twice a week. Filters are cleaned every 4 weeks. Most of my tanks have one betta with a snail or so in them. My 3 10 gallon tanks have each a betts and one has runny nose tetras and the other one fold white clouds with honey gouramis. The other has 1 betta 3 panda catfish and 1 glo tetra. I keep populations down in 10 gallons but have catfish in each. It takes me about 4-5 hours a week to clean my tanks. I would love to try a tank with aquascaping next. But maybe just one so I can take care of it properly. You both are amazing and I thank you for all the great videos and advice you give everyone. Keep up your great work. We all appreciate you both ❤️❤️

I've watched so many fish videos trying to plan my first tank and somehow #2 blew my mind. I knew I wanted a betta and they like big leaves for hiding and resting against? but what kind of gravel or sand do they like? I remember this rumor that they eat certain roots is that true? I'm not actually looking for a response. I'm just saying I'm happy to have more to look into! It seems obvious now but I just needed someone to say it for me to realize.

When it comes to fertilizing planted aquariums the dosing requirements are they based on minimal plant stocking or how does that work. Each one has its own measurements but I feel like if the plant stock is larger you could dose a little more than the amounts suggested in bottles. Like seachems. Or corys ?
@PrimeTimeAquatics
@PrimeTimeAquatics 3 жыл бұрын
Great question - You are right. It is based on an average plant stocking level, but the types of plants and their growth rate will also have a major impact. It really is an art for the most part finding the right levels for your tank.

I'm the opposite of what you mentioned in number 10... I'm interested in the plants! I'm nervous to keep fish, I want them to be safe and healthy. I think I will start with just plants for a few months to see how I do then maybe add a fish. I really like the guppies I have been seeing, would those be a good "beginner" fish?
