I had a neighbour who was a very nice but extremely quiet and guarded lady. One morning, I noticed she was weeding my yard. I went to speak with her and thanked her but she didn't need to do it. She said, "I eat the dandelion greens". She asked if I used any pesticide and I said no. I found out later from her daughter that she was a holocaust survivor and how much she had suffered. My heart ached. Her daughter said, they used to make wine or drinks from the dandelion flowers. It is amazing how humans can adapt to a very cruel life. Clara's video reminded me of the beautiful soul, I had the blessing of knowing.

brainwashed there is no nutritional value in plants You don't have a Rumen or a working cecum to ferment the plant matter like a cow or horse does.... the human cecum is a useless it's a vestigial organ humans have an acidic stomach she was better off catching bugs in the garden and eating those.. if you want to talk about free and nutritious... i have done months and months of research on eating meat vs plants plants are a loser you can't get over 15 vitamins from plants . esp the most important two B12 and omega 3 (the animal version ) the b12 (and other vitamins )found in plastic bottles are fake laboratory versions aka "patented" version of b12 which have Zero bioavailability to humans.... it only mimics b12 vitamins in plastic bottles Do NOTHING for humans it's a scam to take your money...

As someone who's been eating dandelion salads for as long as I can remember this was a interesting watch! I thought we were the only ones that ate them. Theres one important thing that was left out: Only eat these things in the early spring, after they start blooming or get lots of sun the leaves get super bitter and taste horrible. Also we chop them up fairly fine so it's more like a slaw, still use the oil salt and lemon juice but we sometimes add fresh plain crumbled tofu and or veganise to mellow out the flavour a bit. The ratios of lemon and salt are fine tuned to get the yummiest results

Thank you for explaining this. I've tried dandelion leaves a few times (just tasting a bit out in the field--no dressing) and they were _horrible_ . Couldn't imagine anyone eating an entire salad of them. I'll give them another try this spring.

"Sometimes the Lord thinks of you, and drops food from heaven." Reminds me of a story my mom told me about her mother during the Great Depression. Like everyone else, my grandma's family was poor, and didn't have much to eat. She and her siblings were walking along the road when a truck hauling vegetables was driving by. A big bag of onions fell off the truck, and the truck didn't stop to retrieve it. So she and her siblings picked it up and hauled it home. For the next week, they ate meals made of onion. When she was older, one of her favorite things to eat was buttered white bread with a thick slice of Limburger and a slab of onion. For everyone else, it was the breath slayer... for her it had been a lifesaver.

I just made fried dandelion today. I always wanted to make them but i was very unsure and i didn't always have the right ingredients in my house. (Im latino, we don't really bake or use regular flour in my house hold.) but today a lady gave me flour that she didn't need and its early April. I picked someone dandelions, washed them good, got weird looks from my grandma, and made one of the best things i have ever cooked.

My great grandma used to go out and collect dandelions for her salads all the time. People used to try to give her money because they thought she was resorting to eating dandelions because she was in poverty, but in reality she only did it because she cared about her health! She lived to be 101 years old. ♥️

Upon seeing my lawn: My friends: Ugh, weeds! So many weeds! Me: Superfood! Free superfoods! 😆 I treat dandelions as somewhere in between arugula and spinach. My dandelion soup recipe, if you want it, is below: 1. Lightly saute finely chopped onion and potato (I like to use a mix of butter and olive oil). 2. Add garlic, salt, pepper and other dried ground spices to taste (paprika is quite nice). Saute briefly to coat the vegetables. 3. Add chicken stock (or veg stock, if you prefer). 4. Simmer for 10 mins or so until the veg has softened. 5. At this point, add lots of well washed dandelion leaves. (Spring nettle leaves also work really well - just don't harvest nettles once they've started flowering or going to seed - can cause kidney stones). 6. Blanche in the stock for approximately 1 1/2 minutes. It's REALLY important not to overcook the greens - they go brownish and lose a lot of nutrients and flavour if you do that. Look for a fresh rich green colour and cut the heat immediately at that point. 7. Blitz with a blender. 8. Garnish with whatever you fancy. A bit of grated cheddar or Parmesan cheese is lovely. Delicate fresh herbs and croutons also work nicely. If you try the recipe, let me know how it goes! Happy, safe foraging and healthy free treats! Thanks nature. :)

He was walking back to the Netherlands when he saw my grandma and her sister in the woods. I recently started to say "Nazi Germans" when we talk about the war with our kids. I watched this video many times over the past several years, and I’ve never been brave enough to try dandelions like dear Clara advised. Well, I’m gonna finally do it. I eat arugula salads regularly now, so why not try the dandelion leaves instead? I’ve got a big yard full of them. I did pick a whole bunch of flowers and tried a tea, but it tasted like nothing really. I did also dry some and mixed them with olive oil to make a healing salve. In the fall, I’m going to dig up some roots and try to dry and grind them to make a coffee substitute drink. Should be interesting I’m sure. Okay - wish me luck!

Greetings from Bangalore, India. I don’t know much about salad greens as it is not part of our quisine. So I have been learning as I go along...and have been growing dandelion greens thinking they are arugula even though the strong peppery taste of arugula was missing.🙄 I have been eating them in salad with roasted beets and feta cheese.. they are very tasty though. Recently I have found out it’s true identity and have been anxiously checking whether it is ok to eat dandelion greens. And what I find is that they are very impressive nutritional power house. So I will continue eating them. Seeing this video is re assuring. And to see how Ms. Clara takes the trouble to bring us this from her deep experience is so beautiful. I am grateful for that. And I am very sorry to read in one of the comments that Ms. Clara has passed on.

Because some of us don't want to watch an old lady take her time talking about the recipe. She's nice, but she's not what I was looking for; I'm time constrained. We wanted an authentic Depression recipe put in a simple manner, with the ingredients listed in the description, at least. This video could have been twice as short if it was done by someone with experience or education in the media industry. Obviously a big part of this series' is based on being charmed by this (old) lady. It doesn't appeal to me; so it becomes a rather tedious recipe video instead.

Let's all be honest, we didn't search for it. It appeared in our feeds, and it's a bit scary. It really makes me sad knowing she died years ago though, I'm glad a little bit of her is stuck on the internet, this content is so wholesome yet sad. I'm definitely going to try this out someday though, this channel is like a time machine and I hope to watch all the rest of her videos and learn her recipes from a dark time.

We grew up eating greens, dandelions included. We ate it from root to blossom. The greens in salads or cooked like spinach with a little lemon and olive oil. The blossoms were used to make jelly, tea, deep fried or in soups. The root was also for tea (stomach issues) and in stews. The entire plant is useful and healthy. We also ate things like lamb quarters, fiddle fern heads, wild grapes...these are the kinds of knowledge that is increasingly becoming lost. I thank my parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc for what they passed on to us.

Growing up in the pacific northwest, I learned early on the berries and plants that were good to munch on. Me and my friends would spend the whole day in the forest playing, when we got hungry we'd eat fiddle fern tops, various wild berries, etc. My favorite was sheep sorrel, it has a delightfully lemony taste to it. Nowadays I live in the eastern washington desert, unless you find sagebrush to be appetizing not much to munch on out here.
