Crafting India’s 120-Foot-Long Snake Boats

Great Big Story

Great Big Story

4 жыл бұрын

Four hundred years ago, the snake boats of India were warships, used by battling kings along the backwaters of Kerala. Today, the long, canoe-like boats are used exclusively for racing. Reaching up to 120 feet in length, each snake boat can accommodate 100 rowers. In the town of Aranmula, snake boat racing takes on a special significance. The boats are known as Palliyodam and represent the snake upon which Lord Vishnu-the god of protection and preservation-rests. Creating these ornate works involves an intricate process. Master craftsman Santhosh Achari invites us into his workshop to see why it takes nine months-and a keen sense of rhythm-to handcraft one snake boat.

Fun Fact: 0:46 The literal translation here for "Palli Oda"is not "snake boat", but a boat which was/is used by the God himself or people worshiped as deities (The King). A "snake boat" would be "Chundan Vallam".

@@jhsr4827 chundan vallam is used more for the snake boat competition and they are the ones called snake boats. While palliodam which literally translates to "the royal boat" or "the Divine boat" is used for traditional rituals like the 'aranmula valla sadya' where contemporary families from the liniage of the royal family bring food from their homes upstream and serve it to the people near a temple downstream. This is a tradition that has been going on for years and each family owns a palliodam with the family name in which they bring the food, all the while singing folk songs.
