Istria is home to numerous medieval castles, most of which are well preserved and open to the public. In this video we take you on a tour of three of the most historically and architecturally significant ones that Istria has to offer.
The castle of Momjan, perched on a steep cliff next to the village of Momjan/Momiano, has been undergoing restoration and consolidation works for almost a decade now, its beauty slowly reemerging for the next generations to enjoy and preserve. It is the northernmost castle of the Croatian part of Istria, as the border with Slovenia is right across the valley below.
The castle of Kršan is almost synonymous with the partly abandoned village that it encircles. This castle has also been recently renovated and gives the visitors the chance of exploring some of its many rooms, the courtyard and the cellar. You can also climb some sets of stairs next to the watchtower for a better view from above. The village is also interesting for its peculiar chimneys and for the ancient tradition of the "Kršan wedding".
The castle of Petra pilosa derives its name from its "hairy stones", as its location on a cliff in a luscious, humid valley caused its walls to be covered by moss and vegetation. The castle has been subject of an extensive restoration effort financed by the European Union which also fitted it with beautiful wrought iron stairs and gates. The castle has reopened a couple of years ago; you can now visit it for a fee and enjoy the beautiful views from the top floors and experience an interactive exhibition in the church.
