Behind the surface of its picturesque, instagrammable corners, Oprtalj/Portole hides a second town, abandoned and in ruin, barely hidden behind the colorful facades of its main square and its Venetian loggia. Like many Istrian towns, this once thriving place has seen most of its inhabitants flee their homes in hopes of a better life somewhere else. These missing inhabitans are symbolized by the hanging hats swaying in the wind.
