@@pavarottiaardvark3431 Nope. Its definitely been part of the law since at least 1996: LAW 20. SCRUMMAGE Restrictions on Players (17) (a) The player putting in the ball and his immediate opponent must not kick the ball while it is in the scrummage. (b) Neither of the players putting in the ball nor his immediate opponent may take any action while the ball is in the scrummage to convey to the opponents that the ball is out of the scrummage. I was still refereeing in the 1980s and I am certain it was the law then too. The footage looks no more that about 10 years old.

I’m going to say that the professional referees who officiated the match know the laws better than you. It was cool, there’s enough leeway in that law that the play was legal. If only you could have archival footage of Mickey Booth playing for Gloucester in the 1960's with his dummy run from the base of the scrum or the Don Rutherford inspired all the backs in a straight line behind the scrum so the opposition had no idea which way the backs were going to run until the ball came out ,that is if it did and a penalty wasn't gained from the dummy run , Mickey Booth is a legend in Gloucester and will forever be known as the best scrum half to have never played for England -Ask anyone in Gloucester in the shed and they will tell you even today

I think you bring up an interesting point, at least for anyone interested in the 'family tree' of the various codes of football. American football is, as you note, as much about deception, misdirection, and trickery as anything. Many of the amazing plays in this video come off set pieces, suggesting why Walter Camp and American football branched from rugby via every play being a set play.

As a football and rugby player Steve I assure you that you missed out on a glorious game. The culture around the game was the magic that kept me playing till the age of 48. What I liked most of the game itself is any player on your team can score a try (touchdown) at any time. You had to learn what was going on around you as plays developed so you could be in support as much as possible when attacking on offence and tackling on defence. Everyone needed to have running, passing, tackling and ball kicking skills making you a more rounded player. Add that together with sharing a few ( sometimes too many) beers with your opponent after the game made that all the more sweet. Years back I watched a 3rd division game where my club team took possession of the ball from a ruck inside our 25m, ran it down the sidelines having passed the ball through 13 pair of hands to elude being tackled before scoring. This was done by the forward pack and it looked world class. Just my thoughts from an old warrior. Hope you see more great games.

I don't know the laws that well but I got a few questions if anyone has the time: 0:52 - Are you allowed to bind in to a maul before the defenders do? Isn't that the flying wedge law? 1:01 - Isn't it a free-kick if the scrum-half pump fakes from the back of the scrum? 'Make an opponent believe the ball is out of the scrum when it is not.' Maybe these were before some law changes. I'm pretty sure you can't hide the ball under your jersey any more, or lift a player to block a place kick. Anyways nice video cuz. Faves are the Barbarians plays, esp the 5-5-5 formation. Barbarians are one of the coolest teams in all of sports.

Does anyone have footage of the original “up the jumper” try by NSW Country over Sydney in the 1970’s? “Last minute” try in extra time of a nail biter, inspired by the late Daryl Harberecht who had studied American Football plays. No longer legal but was the precursor to many of these mini wall deception ploys.
@MarkBerry-aka-Chuckles
@MarkBerry-aka-Chuckles 2 жыл бұрын
This quote from Classic Wallabies is probably more accurate than my memory … ;-) “One notable highlight of Mansfield’s career came in 1975 when NSW Country defeated Sydney 22-20. Country had a tap kick just inside the Sydney half and their fly half called ‘Tap Five’, the signal for a special move the team had practised at training. The eight forwards then formed a horseshoe that faced their own tryline. Halfback John Hipwell took the tap, turned and edged into the horseshoe as two of the backs joined the setup. Immediately all eleven players, with hands up jumpers, broke from the formation and scattered. Pandemonium and bewilderment reigned in the Sydney defence. Greg Cornelsen emerged with the ball on the far touchline of T.G. Milner Field and took off for the line. When covered on the quarter he popped a pass to Geoff Shaw. Shaw made it to within a few metres of the tryline before he lobbed the ball inside to a trailing Mansfield who crashed over for a dramatic try and tied the match”

4:46 Purported tap kick and run penalty that gets kicked by the backward facing kicker over his own head. That’s the one that gets my vote. Many of the others are eitherr not real tricks, but opportunistic use of good skills, or standard decoy runner school boy stuff. we tried many of those when I was at school. (In our team someone usually knocked on the day). The reason we don’t see that many decoy running from stand still In big games is because running penalties have become scarce since the rule changed to allow penalty line kicks to have line outs awarded to the kicking team, and with no out on the full for penalty line kicks. And scrum attacks have become more effective, because referees ignore the rule that you can’t thrown in the ball under the hooker’s feet. For the same reason hookers have changed. They used to be small guys skilled at hooking the ball with their dangling feet. Nowadays they are powerfull third props. Since scrums and line outs are now mostly in the bag on your own throw in, nobody takes far more risky but potentially memorable running penalties anymore.

That's just sad, bit of a sore loser there Douger. Never heard that one about the 95 RWC Final. The fact that he was given it all is suspect, at the very least. Reciving afterward doesn't make it less of a bribe, he may have been promised it before the game.

Most of these 'tricks' are just players standing offside, and for some reason the ref not pinging them for it. So I guess you could say that the opposition aren't being tricked but the referee in most cases is just tricked into forgetting the most basic law in the book!

Someone ecplain 0:56 ? If the balls at the back its obstruction, at the front its an early bind and its also fair to hit the man surely?

@@dscott6629 The defending team were hoping the attacking team would shift the ball to the back and get penalised for obstruction. Attacking team wised up and kept it at the front. Left both teams unsure what to do next!

@@Cwlcymro Eh? Charging the ball and putting the man down is a big part of the game, and, should the ball be passed back and the chasers interfered with then they'll be penalized and lose possession. That's a win/win situation for the defenders I believe. The only thing I can think of is that they thought the intent was to pull them into a maul and then fire it out to the wing... but that happens all the time (quite literally). So at least two or three should have charged in when the penalty was taken as basic game play. Perhaps an up and under? Still confused. :-(

1.40 its hardly a trick play to take a maul down the field against a pack who are probably giving up around 20kg a man.
