This video series, hosted by Michael Gross, will teach you the simple how-to workshop techniques you need to know to take an HO scale electric train set and make it a scenic model railroad. Well show you how to build a 4x8 model train table (benchwork) from plywood, lay sections of track, create easy realistic scenery using foam and paint, assemble model buildings, and wire your layout with a DC power pack. When youre done, youll have a railroad that operates well and looks real. Our techniques would work in N, O, S, G, or Z scale also. This video is scene 8, Scenery part 2 how-to. For more information and a free booklet with more tips visit greatesthobby.com. The Worlds Greatest Hobby program is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the fun, relaxing, and fascinating hobby of model railroading. Primary sponsors of our series are Atlas Model Railroad Co., Bachmann Trains, Kato Precision Railroad Models, Wm. K. Walthers Inc., and Kalmbach Publishing. And i see this, and it puts a foot into the door for me, got a whole room dedicated to the train set, and i got little cars to go with it, i can play with that while i have my conductors hat on, and move the train around the set, love this hobby so much!:) Great video buddy!

Very straightforward techniques with the right amount of instruction to make it good for beginners without being boring for more advanced builders. My only suggestion is to offer alternatives, where reasonable, to ready-to-use products from a specific manufacturer. While these products have a place, using them for everything adds a lot of avoidable expense and does not encourage as much creativity.

I actually used that ground cover method on my current train layout; painting the plywood in earth and green colors (depending on the area) and sprinkling the ground foam turf (it's even by the same brand: Woodland Scenics!) It looks much better than the grass mat I used on my old layout. Since I didn't use roadbed track, I also applied ballast to the track after it was laid, and it looks pretty good.
@ZakWolf
@ZakWolf 4 жыл бұрын
For the currently layout I built after that one after our move into our current house, I again used that same ground cover method, painting the insulation foam base in the earth colors and sprinkling the ground foam turf in areas requiring grass (mostly using Woodland Scenics and Life-Like's grass material) and Woodland Scenics gray "gravel" for the railroad yard.

I am considering putting Hydrocal on all exposed foam to protect it, because most likely that would be the place where the foam would end up being smashed or cracked somehow.

Definitely a good way to start the hobby. However, I would choose hand-made structures instead (made of balsa wood, styrene or, even, thin cardboard. In that case, it would be necessary to purchase the doors and windows). Also, making the grass with wood sand does´t make a layout look worse (even though its a kind of a cliché) while it's a much cheaper alternative. Concerning to the trees, little pieces of real trees sticks (specially fork-shaped ones) with some green painted pillow synthetic foam on them are an alternative.

to the one posting this (if your the one that made the video) the scenery techniques and all are fine.. so it the track and such, but so many people are now losing their homes or have family move in that there isn't going to be space for 4X8 layouts anymore.. they weren't really that great anyway. You have to start going more like europe and japan plus like "long time modelers" and do the layout along the wall. Shelf layouts or free standing as they don't take up much space and more designs.

you could add a switch track that leads off to an area were you want to eventually extend it,or have your coal factory on an end section on outside of overall main line for a future extension.. Going forth into bigger layouts at start, will really hurt you in the long run easier to start with a basic like this one but customize it to your fashion.

32Jonathan32 I also hate plastering. I use roof shingles for grass and ballast and dirt. I use insulation boards to create my different elevations, never polystyrene. I make use of different grades of aquarium gravel as well, especially for my rock quarry. And I use cotton balls for trees and shrubs along with pencil shaver waste to use as texture for the cotton balls. There is more than one way to scratch a cat. There is no need to spend a fortune to create a great layout.
@brutformen
@brutformen 14 жыл бұрын
@Xenomorph237 one thing you can do is use cooking foil, wrap it into a ball then unwrap it, then apply plaster to the dull side of the foil then once it has dried, peel off the foil, and you have a rock face!
