This video series, hosted by Michael Gross, will teach you the simple how-to workshop techniques you need to know to take an HO scale electric train set and make it a scenic model railroad. We'll show you how to build a 4x8 model train table (benchwork) from plywood, lay sections of track, create easy realistic scenery using foam and paint, assemble model buildings, and wire your layout with a DC power pack. When youre done, youll have a railroad that operates well and looks real. Our techniques would work in N, O, S, G, or Z scale also. This video is scene 4, Laying Track how-to. For more information and a free booklet with more tips visit greatesthobby.com. The World's Greatest Hobby program is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the fun, relaxing, and fascinating hobby of model railroading. Primary sponsors of our series are Atlas Model Railroad Co., Bachmann Trains, Kato Precision Railroad Models, Wm. K. Walthers Inc., and Kalmbach Publishing. A young couple came into the store I worked in. "I have my 4x8 all ready" he said, "what do I do next?" "Well, you could cut it into 12" strips and run it around the walls. Not only do you stop going in circles, you get more mileage, and you save the middle of the room for a sewing machine, play area, etc." His wife elbowed his ribs: "You paying attention to this?" One of my causes was to lead beginners away from bulky 4x8s that quickly got boring and led to many, many hobby dropouts.

Awesome video, thanks. Pulled out my HO set from the early 70's out of storage last year. Always wanted a 4x8 layout for it. Although I want to start back and use N scale, I'm really thinking of using this for the old girl. Now that I am getting old, I am starting to do stuff I wanted to as a kid. Thanks again for the idea.

I learned the hard way that you should leave the glue lines straight between the layers of foam and not closed circles. When you close the lines of glue it creates an air tight void and the other lines of glue don't dry. I pulled some layers apart months later and the glue in between was still wet. lol Also, you need to make sure it's a water based glue. Solvent based will react with the foam.

Nice video on some basic benchwork.👍 Great for beginners & those who's working with a limited 💲budget or floor space. Nothing wrong with a 4❌8 layout. You'll never be stuck with it because somewhere a kid or adult 🙇wishing it was theirs. Thanks for sharing your video. 🚂

I love this layout plan. I have a wealth of space in my rec room to do a layout. I want to do a "U" shape and have three different sections in the layout. I'm going to use this plan and base my train yard/round house off this plan. But I'm going to add another 4ft to the length for building consists and storage. Err anyway awesome video!

Yep, nickel-silver track is definitely the best choice for HO-scale. That Atlas snap-track, flex-track and True-Track, along with the Kato unitrack, also use nickel-silver rails. My current 11x8 L-shape layout uses nickel-silver E-Z Track, and so far I've had no fuss. On the same layout, I also tried out that extruded insulation foam method (what I used was two inches thick and green, but otherwise works exactly the same) and it does make a difference in carving out terrains and such!

i think gluing the track is a bad idea. If you want to change the way your layout works, like adding or removing a siding, or turntable, you can't. my layout has gone under a few changes, like adding long pieces of track and adding a switch

This is mostly good advice for anyone starting out; however, if you are new to the hobby, PLEASE do not glue down your track with a ton of liquid nails, especially if it is EZ track. That's ridiculous. Lol. My recommendation is to not glue it until you are 100% sure that you like it & want to make it permanent. If it is EZ track, you really don't need to glue it, maybe a dab here or there, that's all. If it's snap track or flex track, tack it in place until you are certain you are totally happy with it.

I did this in N scale. One really bad thing: putting sensors in/under track. Becomes a real pain. Just did seven for crossing lights, don't know if I will for block signals. Had to pop the track off the foam to make the holes downward. BTW: I did this with Bachmann N scale ez track, but locos didn't like it. N scale gauge showed the rails were too close. Sent it back and spent more $$$ for Kato track. The trains love the Kato track, the draw backs are hard to get (Have to go online..few hobby stores here) and very expensive, especially switches.

You don't use homasote? It seems like you are using beginner friendly techniques. I would argue it is better for someone who wants to get into the hobby to start using cork road bed and spiking track.. If someone uses the techniques you show and decides to get into the hobby they will, so to speak, start from scracth. However if they don't decide to continue they haven't spent to much and have an enjoyable layout. I see value in both approached for beginners.

@BIAelite - A year ago, I know, but - HO and OO trains run on the same gauge track (16.5mm), even though they are built to slightly different scales. 16.5mm is reasonably accurate for standard gauge in HO - in OO it's about seven scale inches too narrow.

I would never glue the track because main reason being is that if the tracks ever need replacing and you have glued it, the tracks will rip and take some foam with it.

In the British HO system the set track (snap track) has number of pin holes along its length so the track is secured to the baseboard by track pins. The ballast is added by using 50/50 PVA wood glue - water mix. When it comes to taking up the track just carefully use Hot water to loosen the ballast and rails. This means after drying the ballast is still re-useable.

super Idee mit dem Kleben. Vor dem Ankleben sollte man die elektrischen Anschlüsse und die Trennstellen nicht vergessen. Und wenn man die Schienen ändern möchte, gehen sie dann nicht kaputt? Gruß Stefan. Great idea with the glue. Before gluing one should not forget the electrical connections and the separation points. And if you want to change the rails, they go broke not? Greetings Stefan

@jabber1990 - nintendofanboy45 told part of the story. E-Z Trak with nickel-silver rail & grey base (not white) is better as the steel rail (black base) will rust, and needs cleaning much more often. Nickel-silver doesn't rust. I wouldn't use E-Z Trak for a permanent layout. There are much better track systems with "ballast profile" baseplates, and there are alternatives to cork for roadbed as well.

I have a question: I am planning a lego track with points (the old blue track), but I want to build it in a way that the train drives on all tracks without me having to set the points manually. Lego points do not snap back to their old position if a train drives over them like Märklin. Like when you build a straight track with points and loops at the end: o---------o. Do you know if this is possible with more than two points?

That exact track can be bought in a pack sold by Bachman, it's a great value for 135-150 USD. The wood and foam board for about 100. The scenery could be done for as little as 100, but you could spent a lot of time and money on that portion of your layout if you'd choose to make it really something to be proud of.
