I remember a lot of people at the time criticising Messi's performances because he never scored and expected him to replicate his Barcelona form. But I still felt that he was Argentina's most dangerous player a lot of the time and his runs and passes led to goals.

3:18 Most of you won't understand why, but there's a whole story behind the reason why this goal scored by Martín Palermo was so screamed by most of the country (even look at Maradona at 3:26). He's the all-time top scorer of Boca Juniors, he overcame several grave injuries, and scored a miraculous last-minute goal vs Perú to qualify Argentina to this WC. So Maradona included him in the final list as a reward for him and his hard work. And then this happens: Diego Milito, who had been the top scorer of Champions League winner Inter, played 80 minutes that day and couldn't even have a single clear chance. Palermo enters lasting 10 minutes and gets to score a goal, becoming the oldest WC debutant to score at that moment. His career was movie-like. A pure legend, so underrated.

After watching all these highlights, I have concluded that the prevailing notion at the time (that Messi played poorly in this tournament) was completely wrong. He was involved in several of his teammates’ goals, and but for a few bad breaks, he’d have had some goals of his own. At the end of the day, he was a kid who led a team that didn’t really have a manager (let’s face it, Maradona was more like a cheerleader with a clipboard) to a quarter final appearance. That’s a lot of pressure to put on one player, and it’s a credit to his on the field leadership that they went as far as they did.

It was a badly managed team. You can even see it in this match, the goals were both rebounds with only a few players showing any of that Argentine flair to them.

Tbf, if there was any time to be mismanaged it was this tournament here: those Spain and Germany teams at the time were ridiculous and likely would have overpowered these guys even if they were being managed correctly. Definitely worth it in the long run as the next guy who came in played to Messi's strengths more and sorted out the defence which led onto 2014 and everything that came after.

All of you that are saying Messi played terrible but got Man of the match is stupid. He played a great game. Only thing missing was the goal. One was a great save by the goalie, the other one hit the side bar. He created chances for this teammates. the second goal was a reflection of his shot on goal. if we're talking about this year, then yes. Messi deserves the FIFA World Player of the Year. in 2010 he didn't have very much success outside of La Liga, but this year he has 91 goals in all competitions to his name, beating a record held by the great Gerd Muller for decades, and has been very successful for Argentina as well. Xavi and Iniesta are midfield maestros but Messi is a phenomenal goal scorer and one of the greatest of all time.

Rooney, Messi, and Ronaldo all choked in this world cup. Hopefully this next one will be a good one for them.

Rooney was shit again(his goal was shit as well). Ronaldo was injured and had a horrible team, but came up short nevertheless. Messi was good, scored two beauties, but just never really took off.
