Green Mountain Grills Davy Crockett vs the Baldr 330 battery. Can it handle long smoke/cooking time?

I've been smoking and grilling on a pellet BBQ for over 16 years now, and never have I seen a grill that will hold a temperature range to +/- 2 degrees every time. On my past grill, the temperature was always rolling up and down from the target temperature often by 20 degrees, and sometimes 50... So you never really knew when the food would be done. GMG grills impressed me from the first time I fired it up just to break in and season the barrel.
The next best thing was that all of the GMG grills run on 12 volts. The wall plug is actually a transformer that reduces the AC to 12V DC like a laptop computer uses. This makes the Davy Crockett model ideal for camping and RVing where access to a car battery is near.
Finally the addition of a portable battery capable of providing 12 volts gives you the freedom to use your Green Mountain Grill almost anywhere.... (probably not under water)
Today I test the draw and capability of a portable battery that could very easily be taken camping to BBQ, but also charge up phones, and laptops in remote places. The Baldr 330, offers the power to smoke for hours, with less than 10% battery usage... Check it out!!! What a team.

I have the gmg big pig trailer that comes with a 12v car battery. I’ve done 15hr brisket cooks without plugging in to external power. Love it

Great video. No more Amp hours that it's drawing you could attach a solar panel to maintain the charge while sunny.

Very good informative info and test. I’m going to do a test on my marine battery soon. Thanks.

It should last a long time with a deep cycle battery like that. Most of them have at least 800 ah rating.

What if you bring the temp up to 350? What happens then? Does the watts per hour stay low or will it shoot up to the 70’s?

Hi Richard. I'm not sure that increasing the temperature of the barrel is going to have a drastic increase in the draw rate of the battery. Once the initial start cycle is complete and the hot rod that ignites the pellets turns off, it wont come on again. So then the action of increasing the temperature to 350 is a matter of the auger pushing more pellets, and the fan stoking the firebox to achieve that temperature. Once there at 350, the grill will slow down into a maintenance role to hold that temperature. Neither the auger nor the fan tax the draw rate significantly, so I would have to say... I don't think so. I'll update this reply if I have a situation come up where I run at the higher temp for a long period of time... Great question!!!

Would that work with my Daniel Boone Choice ? ... mine's not 12v

Looks like the Choice models are indeed 110v, and although this battery has an AC outlet on it the battery is too small to support a 110v inversion for a long length of time like you need for a smoker. I used The AC outlet to charge up my laptop on a camping trip and just that took the battery down pretty far. Inverting DC voltage to AC seems to really drain it fast.

Why not use the 3 prong?

I haven’t tried it. It would depend on the draw of powering the transformer over a long time vs the draw directly from the DC battery on board. I’ll check it out.

I kind of experimented with the A/C outlet. Didn’t actually hook it up but… if you plug any kind of transformer into the A/C it is a constant drain so it will take the battery down faster than using the D/C side of the battery because the D/C will only pull the current necessary for the fan and auger after the ignition cycle. Which is very small. However the A/C side will be supplying a full 12V at max amperage regardless of what it needs. You will run out of battery before your smoke is done using A/C.
