My granddaughter is 23 and a junior in college studying Sociology. For the first time in her studies, she heard the phrase "Critical Race Theory." It's a University concept, not happening in elementary school.

I loved the library when I was a kid. If I had seen that library when I was a kid I would have cried.

The premise of this video’s title is impossible. Someone can only be “embarrassed” if they are capable of humility. Someone is only capable of humility if they want to correct mistakes they’ve made, feel shame for the lies they’ve told, or remorse for the harm they’ve caused. You can’t shame the shameless.

One thing you learn in school is when you see a number, do a quick mental check to see it actually makes sense. That's how you know MTG probably didn't graduate high school on her own accord.

As a librarian, the censorship infuriates me, but it killed me that MTG thinks libraries spent $16k on “Drag Queen Story Hour.” My entire year budget for programs in my department is less than $3k. Imagine blowing more than 5x that on A SINGLE program 🤡

9.7 Billion is the entire education budget for the whole of Illinois... The fact that the GOP thinks MTG is fit to be on any committee when she shows up so woefully prepared for her first hearing, speaks volumes.

Just a little tidbit here... After my first trip to an allergist when I was 4 (severely, dangerously asthmatic) my folks got rid of their gas stove for an electric on the advice of my doctor. This would have been in the late 50's.

Those empty middle school bookshelves brought tears to my eyes. The library was the one place I truly felt safe in middle school.

Every day I ask myself “How can this be real? How can these people be taken seriously?”

The fact that any of these insane people are in charge of anything leeds me to believe we are in a simulation and some teenager is laughing hysterically at all his/her sane characters losing our minds in our utter disgust and disbelief. Seriously this can’t be real.

I remember when I was a little kid and got my first library card. Before computers those books opened up the whole world to me. I feel so sorry for those kids today.

In my high school (Texas), we had some book banning years ago, and books that were banned were segregated in the library, and hidden behind a white sheet with a sign on it "Banned books, do not look here." And if you took a banned book to the librarian, she would say "we aren't allowed to loan that book out, but since we don't have it, we wouldn't know if it went missing. Bring it back so others can read it." So yeah, the banned section saw action, and worked as well or better than the non-banned section, and no books were denied to us. Never challenge a librarian when it comes to free speech. I bet that empty library was empty because the rules on content were so vague, everything could count, so, rather than leaving in the obvious OK books, they took everything out, so show there are no books under censorship.

This is one of the best spots I've seen on this show. Kudos!

If a single school got that much funding, they would be thrilled they can actually pay their teachers a livable wage. The cafeterias would provide filet mignon instead of caramelized cardboard. And textbooks would have a publishing date from this century. Also CRT is not an elementary school program, its a college elective. But you can't tell that to MTG who would not be able to pass a third grade curriculum even if all the answers were provided to her and all she had to do was sign her name.

It is genuinely stunning to watch Trump talk. Literally every single word is the total opposite of the truth, and he doesn't even blink.

The book banning is by far one the most horrendous things Desantis has done to the education system. I grew up on books. My parents once freaked out because I went out to "play" as a child and they couldnt find me for hours. Truth is, I'd walked myself to the library, sat there and read through the new Animorphs. I also read about many subjects well before I'd been exposed to them in other ways. Because I was allowed to read whatever I wanted pretty much, when I was 11 and bored and stuck at my aunts I found her copy of romance novels. I picked one up and read it, including a scene in which the heroine is raped. I had no concept of rape, but I have to say, of all the ways to be exposed this had to be easily the least scarring. I knew it was wrong, obviously, because it hurt the main character, and I felt bad for her. I had questions, but over all I came out of it knowing that rape was a crime, that people who are raped deserved empathy, and that you should never, ever force someone to "love" you (I was 11). Of course, that's exactly WHY Desantis takes such issue with books. They can introduce you to new subjects, good or bad, and help teach you empathy and morals. Not only that, but critical thinking skills are strengthened by reading. How dare they have books with gay characters that may cause children to empathize with LGBTQ individuals! How dare they nuture a child's ability to think critiyally and form their own opinions, their own moral compass!? These things can't be allowed! Children should have access to all sorts of books, even ones we disagree with. Yes, some should come with context, but thats what annotations and classes are for, but we do far more damage to children when we "protect" them from books than we do good.

When I went to culinary school almost 20 years ago they showed us that induction burners are just as good as has ones and they were right. Back then they were really expensive but that’s not the case anymore. Plus the stove itself never gets hot

10:05 I was having a great time burying my head in my hand and chortling over the stupidity of it all until I saw the headline, 'Hide your books,' and got chills from head to toe. Literally. I've never had that happened before, just a shiver that started behind my ears and shot down my entire body. I read Fahrenheit 451 in high school and thought it was interesting how many things Bradbury predicted--we're pretty much to the point of mechanical hound police dogs and wall-sized televisions. But I thought, "At least we'll never ban reading, that's way too crazy." And now here I am, suddenly shivering from the whiplash of a funny comedy show crashing into sudden, sheer dread for the future. So that's cool. I never have to wonder now how characters end up in seemingly farfetched dystopian futures. Neat.

Watching this show during the pandemic helped me so very much. Thank you, Seth.
