As good as he played it in this clip, he played it ten times better, which doesnt seem possible I know, but of course it was a much more relaxed atmosphere plus he was able to play the full song, and he put every ounce of his being into it. It was absolutely incredible!

Yeah..I admit growing up in Texas every Saturday night on TV was nothing but Country & Western variety shows and I never realized how fucking talented some of those jokers were.

1974... We went to the Pleasanton, CA. fairgrounds to see the "Hee Haw live" road show with the whole cast, Roy, Buck, Grandpa, Minnie (Pearl), String bean, Junior and the rest... They played their hearts out. It was amazing! 😊

Nope, he even said that Glen Campbell was better than he was at the guitar. Roy was the best overall with all the stringed instruments.

And that was before the internet. Now its very easy to get exposed to different styles like flamenco. But back then many people had probably never heard anyone play a guitar like Roy Clark just did. Its the closest you can get in real life to Back to the Future, where Marty plays music a generation ahead of its time.

I've seen Roy play in person twice, once in my friends studio. I saw him play rock stuff that would put most of those guys to shame... Just like Buddy Rich (my hero and reason I play drums) whom I've also heard live, he *can* play rock with the best, it's just "not their cup of tea." 😉

We watched because it was cousin Roy, and it was always entertaining. Dad and Roy were 1st cousins. Ole Southside Virginia boys. Roy did a couple Christmas specials from Lunenburg County, his old home place in Meherrin, VA.

I have a Roy Clark story to tell. Back in 1969 or 1970, I was a telephone operator for Ma Bell. I “met” Roy Clark over the phone when he was in in town (North Hollywood, CA) to play a gig at The Palomino Club, then the most famous Country/Western club on the West Coast. But you see? At this time, I didn’t like Country music. So to continue, this nice man called in from the Howard Johnson Hotel in Sherman Oaks. This was back in the dinosaur days when a guest had to go through the hotel switchboard operator who would connect them to a telephone company operator. Then we would place the call for the customer. Well, this nice man wanted to call all the managers of all the many Minnie Pearl Fried Chicken restaurants he owned. Then he told me, “I’m Roy Clark.” He said it like it was supposed to mean something to me. I had no idea who he was so I said, “It’s nice to meet you, Mr Clark.” He put his hand over the receiver and whispered to someone in his room, “She doesn’t know who I AM!” He sounded surprised but not upset. He then said, “Do you like Country music?” I sneered and said, “I HATE it! All those TWANGY GUITARS!!!” He laughed and laughed but in a really sweet, lighthearted way. Then he told me about his gig but he was so modest that I thought he was just going to jam with some other better musicians! It was like he didn’t want to tell me he was the star. We got to talking and he invited me to his hotel so he could show me all the instruments he played. I took it the wrong way & he apologized & invited my husband to come with me. I was feeling shy & worried about my job so I turned him down! (To be continued)

I am 54, but I loved listening to him as a small kid, had the LP (vinyl) my dad got me, he was so funny and amazing doesn't do justice. Just loved his cute cheeks I don't know if he had children
