I ALWAYS played this solely with my pointer and ring finger and my hands give out after like one verse. I see what you're doing with all those fingers. Gotta give it a shot tomorrow. Thanks for doing these videos

Just found your channel and immediately subscribed! Good DMB tutorials are hard to find! The only comment I'd make on this one is that I'm pretty sure Dave plays D/F# (with the thumb over to play the 6th string) in the chorus. You can clearly hear that low F# on many of the acoustic versions. Great job! Looking forward to working through more of your lessons!

Man, it took me a long time to get that exact rhythm down for that Intro. Just be patient with it 🤘

@@carsonmac I have actually been playing the hell out of this the last two days and I think I can officially play this song all the way through. Honestly, the hardest part was relearning how to correctly place my fingers for the opening chords. Your right, it pays off and sounds much better. Plus, Dave looks so freaking cool effortlessly playing this song like that so I had to learn to do it right. Thank you again man!

I love this tutorial. Can you explain the mute for just a brief moment? Are you muting with the strumming hand or with the left hand?

I have so much trouble with these "Dave Chords". I always get a lot of ringing on the A and D strings, especially in something like the slow break in Lie In Our Graves. How do you keep this sounding so clean?

how do you get the b and low e strings to have that muted sound? when i try they drown out the other strings.

Hey quick question for you on this one. When playing the intro/verse chords I notice my open D string ringing out and it stands out a bit. Do you do any muting to stop that? If so do you do palm muting with your right hand or try to mute a bit with your fretting fingers? Or do I just need to fill out my strumming a little bit more just so it blends in with the song a bit? I do find my strumming needs to get a little more sophisticated as I am generally hitting the down strums with a little gap in between which is where that ringing D sticks out. Thanks again!

What exactly is the difference of using 4 fingers or two? Are the the same chords or is it because using 2 fingers makes you have to slide around more

Robert Barbaro four fingers keep you from having to slide around more. Two fingers give it a real choppy and not smooth sound. This song is based on the smooth transition between those ‘dave chords’, which achieved by playing with four fingers. Plus, i try to teach these songs the exact way Dave Matthews plays it so you get the exact sound, and that is how he plays it.

Are you muting all the other stings besides the two that your are holding down in the main riff?

All other strings except the D string. It’s left open the entire time throughout the intro/verse.

Haha! Just focus on your thumb on the back of the neck. If you have shorter fingers all you need to do is move your thumb lower on the back of the neck. Anyone can do it, I promise!

"I'm gonna be explaining all of these Dave chords, use all 4 of your fingers"... Yeah but on what notes? Other that the root note and pinkie which hits the 3rd of every chord what notes are we supposed to play to get the whole chord? Did I miss you explain this somewhere at the end or something? You just start playing the chords like you've already explained what all the notes in the middle are? Edit: it seems like you kinda mute the a string maybe or let it ring open and let the D string at least ring open for the whole time?
