Shouldn't the better question be, "Do I have enough beers to season my griddle?" Planning is key here. Make sure you have plenty so you don't have to interrupt the process and asking your wife go to the store for you. You may just end up with Bud Light. Not worth the risk.

By the way, I don't have rodents, etc. that I use the orange mat for, I live at the beach area and it's on my balcony that is exposed to the elements, moisture, etc. I put it on then use a plastic grill cover also. I don't have a hard cover for my griddle. I have a small Pit Boss grill that I put on top before covering it with the plastic cover and that elevates the area so if it does rain, which is unlikely around here, it doesn't puddle. I love watching your videos Johnny, you are very entertaining (and cute)!! Melaney from SoCal

Thanks for the tips! I do not like beer - I substitute bourbon or rum on occasion. Hopefully, that is not anathema. I do like the idea of seasoning griddle 5 or 6 times into the night but drinking bourbon……😵‍💫

New your channel, and I / we appreciate all the tips you share with us new to an outdoor griddle. A week with my balckstone, and I really see the necessity of an infrared thermometer. Temperature fluctuates like crazy ! The right side is the cooler zone, next day it's totally different. I did a bunch of onions to help even out the seasoning around the edges last night. All 4 burners on low temperature was above 400°. Shut middle ones down to get a medium low , 300° to 320° then threw onions on. To maintain that temp I had to adjust burners a bit, one middle burner back on for a while, then back off, side burners up above low, then back down. It's definitely challenging! Hence the need for the second necessity.... beer. I thoroughly enjoy your content! Cheers

Start paying attention to the wind speed and direction in general and especially when you see temp fluctuations. I can hear the flames "wiff" in the wind as they flame down & flare back up & I can peep under to see them blowing around. I turn my griddle at an angle & prop up 2 small pieces of plywood (screwed together) @ back & left or right as my wind block. The wind break really helps & I plan to buy one bigger piece for the back & another for the side and screw a hinge on them. I'll use A/C plywood (A side is smooth for camera) & paint it with a white high gloss exterior enamel latex for easy cleaning. Some days are so windy now, I also use a big baking sheet on the 3rd side but it falls over, so maybe a 3-sided plywood rig is coming?
@wikster6630
@wikster6630 6 күн бұрын
@harddocs Thanks for the suggestion to help with the wind. I noticed the wind issue when I was seasoning it the first day. I heard they make magnetic wind guards for those areas. Heat weakens magnets, so I don't think they would last long. Cheers

At my age, knowing what oil is the healthiest but can also go high in temperature is of the uptmost importance to me and my similiarly aged wife. The fact that we are cooking on a griddle to begin with is probably a step in the wrong direction but I digress. For us, the oils I use to cook on the griddle for health and temp variation purposes are reg olive oil, Avocado oil and if necessary because I have it and not the others Coconut oil. The one's I have never cooked with are vegi oil, canola oil or any of those. They are toxic on so many levels but again i digress. Thanks for the video big dog. You rock 👍👍

Awesome Vid Brother. I'm OCD with my griddle. I clean it every time I use it. Put oil on it before I start cooking, oil it after I'm done cleaning it. Let it burn off. Maybe put another light coat before I shut it off. Ik. I need to be institutionalized. 😅 But I don't have rust. 😂 Very informative video. Keep Griddlin'. Shawn 🍻

I did get the Cuisinart CGG 501 two burner gas griddle. Loving all your recipes. Cuisinart suggested Flax Seed oil to season which I did and it worked out great. Thank goodness I occasionally get in a healthy smoothie mood and had some. Of course I use Avocado oil like you suggested. Griddling still has a lot of oil, but helps keep you regular and lubed up. ;-) I just ordered the weather proof cover and carrier. I don’t need the weight and the cost of a metal cover. It is a bit of a joke with the size a two burner griddle, but I ordered the Cuisinart Food Mover, which should be really helpful with fried rice. I like my tools, and free shipping. You need to check out that tool that is like 7.5 inches by 7.5 inches , Johnny. A big scoop. Almost bought some thick sliced bologna today. Maybe one day soon. Chicken wings with teriyaki, well when you have too much to fit under a large rectangular dome, you have to burn them partially to get up to temp. It was really hot the other day and was going to griddle my porterhouse steaks for the 4th to lessen my outside exposure and time, but the wife yelled at me to pull out my Weber Kamado, get the charcoal going. Of course with indirect and reverse sear. There is a time and a place for a steak cooked on the griddle. ;-) Yes, the Loco griddles look fantastic. And have dropped in price significantly at some big box stores. They are suppose to keep consistent temperatures by turning on and off with each burner. However if you find the review where the guy has six griddles, and does the toast test, the Loco grill has so many uneven temperature spots on that grill. Usually simpler is better. Just like technology is not your friend when something goes wrong. Cheers, Johnny! I will be trying out more of your recipes, while trying not to piss off the wife too much. Women don’t believe in “ happy accidents”. ;-)

What I do is say that you are cooking 🍳 a steak and you are putting it on 325° I put mine on 350 before I put them on and have the steaks room temperature 🌡 then turn the heat down then put the steaks on and put it on low Because when the steak hits the top, it cools it down. Then, as you flip it over, you put it in a spot where it is an empty spot because the spot it was is going to be cooler. & go to lows and buy a heat gun that helps out as well. I have been using it. Simple foods Avocado 🥑 oil 🛢

Great video!! EZ Off oven cleaner and a cheap electric power washer made quick work of stripping a dumpster find Lodge 6 qt Dutch oven to bare shiny cast iron. To be honest, the power washer wasn’t completely necessary but I had it and it made the process more fun. I can’t imagine one couldn’t achieve the same results on a griddle. Just rinse well, and then rinse with vinegar to neutralize any residual lye from the oven cleaner. There won’t be any after a thorough rinsing, but the vinegar rinse will make you feel better. Then reseason and you’re off to the races with a newly resurfaced griddle in less than a 6 pack’s worth of time. As for seasoning, I had a happy accident that made a lasting impression. I had finished cooking, done the water scrapey scrapey thing until it was clean enough for me, then wiped a thin film of oil on it and went inside, leaving it to season for 15 minutes or so on medium. Well I forgot about it for 45 minutes. Ran outside expecting to find a puddle of molten metal where my griddle once stood, and found the most perfectly even, black griddle top I’ve ever seen. Subsequent testing has shown that about 30 minutes gives that glorious even black surface.
