Hey guys, one correction to my video: Lighter skin tones in clog 2 should hit around 55 ire. That camera was used for a livestream the day before and was in bt709 so it displays different values for proper exposure (yes I realize the irony of this lol). Everything else I said about rating the camera for the proper iso, using false color, and watching for clipping in the highlights and shadows is all still accurate. Done is better than perfect, and I don’t have time to reshoot it this week. Hope it is still helpful 🤙

so when you are shooting green screen with the c70 and C500 (my life basically) what ire are you targeting for the greenscreen? Also what ire for darker skin tones? thanks!
@franciscobf
@franciscobf 3 жыл бұрын
Is this why your highlights were clipping at 100 ire? In clog 2, my highlights are clipping around 85 % and the zebras aren't spot on on this camera. Thanks for the video.
3 жыл бұрын
@@franciscobf Se my question. But if the camera was set to Rec709 profile then they clip at 100%. Highlights in Clog2 are clipping at around 80%.

Totally agree, you can take days for making it perfect but not getting it online! I really prefer not to be perfekt but helpful as your videos really are. Specially in real scenarios. Many youtube videos are theoretical - yes they help too, but as a filmmaker we have to deal with the real stuff and get the job done as good as possible. ... last thing.... Sub... done!

It seems so counterintuitive to raise the ISO in very bright situations but if shooting in some flavor of clog I like to think of it in terms of making the sensor MORE sensitive to very bright situations to capture those highlights, ND up, set ISO to 800-1600. Nice job, per usual. 🤙🏼

As a low budget/indie filmmaker, it's important to be able to shoot most anywhere and not draw attention to myself. Hence, why I lean towards cameras that look like a DSLR. Currently, I'm shooting with the Sony FX30. Which I really like. But, I'm looking at where I want to go next if I want to level UP my camera. While the FX6 seems like a natural choice, I think the C70 is even better especially because of that DSLR-like form factor. I could probably shoot most anywhere with the C70 and not draw a lot of attention because of its form factor. This video was perfect, because it shows in a very easy to understand way of how to expose CLog2. And you kept the video to just about 10 minutes. An impressive feat given how long most videos are that explain how to expose Log footage with other cameras. Thanks for keeping it short, yet clear.

Great tip about ISO. I think many people see "base ISO" and think they need to stay there in every situation and you explained perfectly why that isn't the case. If I was shooting with my URSA G2 in the scenario with Flo, I would be at ISO 1600 since it has even better highlight details than 800 on that camera. So valuable really knowing your camera. Great video brother!

Great video, Griffin! (and thanks for the correction post about waveform viewing in Rec709). I realaize that a lot of people struggle with the concept of raising ISO in highlight-heavy scenes, as it does seem counter-intuitive. This is how I think about it: In a log space, I NEVER view ISO as an exposure tool. Rather, I see it as a tool to either a) maximize dynamic range (set at native ISO), or b) reduce noise (set lower than native ISO, to the detriment to highlight range). As in, if it's bright outside, I want the most about on Dynamic Range, so I would set C-Log 2 to ISO 800. In a dark space with no specular or extream highlight info, I would lower it to below native and be fine with the loss in highlight range, since there's nothing that will be lost in that range anyways. Hope that helps with anyone trying to wrap their head around this!

Thanks for this C70 series. I'm a doc filmmaker who just got my hands on a C70 after over a year of researching and waiting. As a former C-100 mk II user, I'm loving this camera and it is everything I wanted but didn't have from the C100. I'm hoping I can use this camera for the next 5 years, at least, and bring in a C300 mk III or C500 mk II as the A-cam on gigs when we have the budget for another rental.

Hey, thanks for the video. I was a little confused about the ISO values though. I would always try to keep it at 800 or above and never go higher. I often also find myself going to 2 Stops of ND more and raising the ISO before going below 800. But I guess it makes no difference when you're indoor with no highlights. One question: Why not use false color for everything?

@GriffinConway
@GriffinConway 3 жыл бұрын
Check this video out that I made: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n6ugfMh1ptncnoE.html I would say it depends on the project. 75% of the time if I’m running cinema lenses I have a focus puller or we are just doing locked off shots. Sometimes I will pull manually for run n gun. That works fine as well too. But it depends on the job and if I feel it’s worth it to give up autofocus or not.

@@GriffinConway haha ok cool. I suppose in that case, using a basic rec709 conversion monitoring lut would give you similar values to the ones in the video, right? I assume that the IRE value would be lower when viewing the waveform on log because there's less contrast & saturation?

Wondering if anyone could help me out. The C70 is my first cinema camera, and the first time I am shooting in Clog-2. I shoot outdoors, and am wondering how I can get a final image that has lots of dynamic range, but with enough contrast that it doesn't look washed out. I have been struggling to get an image that I am happy with.

I would shoot in clog 2 and use this video as a guide to help you with proper exposure, and then what I do is apply one of my custom c70 luts (that are linked in the description) to bring all the color and saturation back to the clip

Hi Griffin, how do you set the slow shutter below 1/15 sec? I choose "slow" in "shutter mode" but I can't go below 1/15. I can only increase to 1/30.

Question about your C70 LUTs. Just bought them and tried loading them onto my C70. Unfortunately, it says "process terminated in error." Do you know how to fix this? I've actually heard of several people with this same issue.

Hey great video I have one quick question as far as exposure working with a C 70 how do you achieve a softer image Image instead of the digitize hard video look that I keep getting?

Really helpful videos. I finally got the camera with the 24-105 RF lens. What do you think is the highest usable iso in low light? 1,600? for professional work. When mainly doing events. I know the 24-70 RF would serve me better as it's f2.8, but it is £1,000+ more in the UK for it. Or would you recommend selling the RF lens and getting the EF 24-105 with the speed booster? I'm just worried the autofocus and stabilization would not be as good.

Great video Bro! Thanks a lot, I just have 3 questions, one, FPS you use 23? Why?? Why not 30? And that takes me to my 2, you were using 180 shutter speed? How that work?? And finally my 3, I saw 5600 K, you use that in every scenario? How you fix that in premier?? Thanks bro!

Hey Chuy, all lights in our studio are balanced to 5600k so that’s why that was used. We use 23.976 because that’s the same frame rate they use in commercials and movies. 30fps is good for the nightly news, etc. shutter angle 180 is standard on cinema cameras and what the vast majority of users choose
