I've had a C70 since it came out, and mostly agree with the comments wondering why Canon didn't keep the C100 config but with C70 spec, but I've really grown to enjoy using the C70 just as much as I have the C100, C200 and C300 in the past. Basically all cameras have flaws, the C100 had a top handle that never quite tightened down, the C300 had the clamshell that always worked loose and drove everyone mad, then if you get into the FS7 LCD (and rubbish loupe) falling down sideways, or the unusable LCD on the EVA1, or the fact that you still need to put IR cut in front of any Blackmagic camera etc etc. All cameras seem to need some aftermarket parts to actually work, as silly as that is. Still...why they didn't just use a slightly stronger hinge on the C70 screen is beyond me. I've kind of accepted it and try to be careful. I love the fact that it's a camera as fully featured as other c-series but you can bung it on a small gimbal or just walk around handheld very easily, and takes cheaper media. I have the zacuto cage and a small rig top handle which gives me plenty of options to mount a portkeys BM5 and a Rode NTG5.

C70, 8Sinn cage, Kondor Blue remote handle, Azden mic mini xlr, RF 15-35 or RF 24-70, Tilta matte box, Comica BoomXD and Canon BP30's is how I roll. I love this camera and the image is nuts. 12 button is for 30 to 120 fps, 9 button for ND+, 6 button for False Color, 8 button for photos. It's all just so easy. I have an R5 for a B camera. I just wished matching footage between the 2 were easier. Cinematch didn't work as advertised. Great Vid, Thanks!!

I've been using the Kondor Blue top and bottom plate with the C70 along with their top handle, and that has been working really well.

Best way to upgrade the C70 is for Canon to come out with a C100 III. EVF, removable & relocatable side grip, full size XLR, more solid and well-built flip-out LCD...no idea why Canon abandoned that body. Though with Canon's new electronic hotshoe any future C100 top handle could be cable-less!

Completely agree. My C100mkii and mki before it has been an incredible workhorse, both in news and in documentaries, but it IS falling behind in terms of specs. There's no reason why the same robust formfactor of the C100 couldn't be upgraded to the specs of the C70 and be incredibly popular among youtubers and professionals.

Thanks for all your hard work you put into these amazing videos. I was just wondering how the lag is when using external monitors through the hdmi? I have passed on Lumix cameras because the lag is so bad it’s hard to pull focus. Thoughts?

Coming from the Canon camcorder world here. It sure is going to be hard giving up the luxury of normal XLR, View Finder, solid LCD and the easier ergonomics. I’m thinking C70 for interviews but a mix of this camera and my Xf605 for cutaways B roll, in some scenarios at least.

Great video. I have a C70 and I'm amazed how many rigging options have appeared in less than a year. Strangely I'm using a wooden camera c300 top plate, mounted backwards - it actually fits great and adds plenty of top mounting holes.

For an enthusiast who might purchase the canon c70 one day, would you recommend sticking with v90 SD cards, or would external recording to an Atomos ninja v be an alternative you would recommend? The price per GB on a Samsung 870 is going to be a fraction of the cost of a v90 sd card, but I know that an atomos recorder cannot record the image to two storage medium, whereas you could record to dual sd cards in the c80.

Thank you for this video. I bought the Wooden Camera XLR adapter---it's hard to see how you are attaching it to the C70. Is that a Zacuto cage? Would the adapter be screwed into the plate?

I wish I've seen this before I bought smallrig and Kordon Blue accessories. All of them are pretty good but I would probably make mix and much from different brands for some of the parts, like the baseplate, which is overpriced in both honestly for what Tilta can give you and with decreased weight.

Do you guys recommend a Sachtler 8 series tripod for this camera? I have an FSB 4, and it's not quite strong enough, so I have been thinking of getting one of the 6's.

Fantastic helpful video thank you! A question about the Atomos shinobi + C70. Would you be able to use the same C70 functions on it like false colour and touch auto focus or would you need to use the flip screen? Thanks!

You will be able to use False Colour via the HDMI output or on the Shinobi. Touch screen will not work via the Shinobi only via the C70's monitor. Jake

@@CVPTV Do you happen to know if there has been any change on this in the past couple of years? I am trying to find an external monitor that you can "mirror" the direct touch functions of the C70 onto. I want to use the touch screen capabilities to change up auto focus targets etc, but I do not want to have that tiny screen folded out as its just so so easy to break. If there still isnlt an external monitor that you can do this on.. thatls pretty wild. I feel like all c70 owners would benefit from, and appreciate, some kind of mirroring of the touch functionality onto the external monitor. Any recommendations or information would be greatly appreciated!

I’m very doubtful the little preamp on that track e is good enough to get any value from 32 bit float recording. It won’t actually give you any extra dynamic range unless the preamp and pre codec electronics have over 144db of dynamic range (which can be captured by 24 bit) which is a big ask, even on big, high end pro audio equipment

Hot shoe comes loose with the top handle because of the heavy payload. Get a full cage.

£500 quid for a loupe seems excessive considering the cost of external monitor, or even some evfs these days. I am not saying it's a bad or cheap product it just seems to be at such a price where you'd go for something else.

Hey Chris, yeah agreed the Zacuto Z Finder is defo pricey and certainly a bit risky to use with the C70's flimsy LCD! If people have the budget, a proper EVF setup will be much much better! Jake

@@CVPTV I also think that blocking the touch screen isn't worth while. It sort of shows the age of the loupe for DSLRs and how impractical they are. While as stated a good day light viewing monitor in the shinobi is almost half the price.

@@CVPTV also if you have or if you'd ever co sider doing one of these for the Zcam would be nice. Obviously it would depend on model though, even though I don't have it, I'd recommend doing the S6G as it is compatible with all the accessories, including the turbo mount. And offers a great mid point. For that system.

The screen issue is unacceptable. It's absolutely hilarious. People are just sort of accepting it? The formfactor is a gimmick aside from it being a decent size for gimbals. A C100mkiii with the C70 specs would have been far better. The dinky xlr ports are frustrating. Can't plug in my Sennheiser AVX. Need a freaking cage to turn it into a useable camera.. and then the screen is likely going to break, so that's two or 3 weeks in repair time sending it to Canon. The joystick is apparently garbage. What's up with the quality control on this steaming brick?

Hey Simon, Completely agree that the build quality of the screen is an issue, I brought it up to Canon when I first tested the camera before it was even announced! I also agree that a C100 MKIII body C70 would have been a much better option for so many, though I feel like Canon wanted the C70 to feel familiar to people coming from DSLR/Mirrorless cameras, not that I agree with that design philosophy. Again agree mini XLRS aren't ideal, however I wouldn't call it a steaming brick! Just an imperfect one. Jake

No joke, the 10+ year old Canon 60d has a better screen. The hinge is way tighter and more secure. The C70 specs in a C100 body is the C300 Mkiii.
