You remind me myself 30 years ago. I am 66 years old and now I have my own Tooling Company. I still have my Shenway Lathe. Still holds .0005 tolerance. I am in path to make one million in 2023.

So glad to hear your journey. I just purchased a PM30 and this winter began converting it to a CNC. I stopped in the summer for my main job and other things, but this coming winter I hope to finish it up and start making parts. I'm shocked you can pay off your Tormach CNC with 2 weeks of work. That's insane! Congratulations on your expansion. Going to deep dive your channel now!

There really is something special about having a lathe. Ive had CNC routers for years now, C02 lasers and 3d printers but there are SO many times I find myself thinking wow if only I had a lathe!

There used to be several machine shops in almost every town that had any industry at all. Now there are not many folks being trained to do work on anything but CNC machines, so you have to teach yourself much more to run your kind of shop. I think there is a bright future for small reliable "hot-Shot" machine shops that can get work done promptly. I oc=nce saw a guy corner a worldwide market with word-of-mouth advertising of a microscope eyepiece for Nikon Cool-Pix cameras.

Nice stuff man. I had picked up a tormach 440 and used it to do runs of AR lowers that I bought in 80% form, I'd already bought and paid off a 30w fiber laser engraver do laser work. Used the laser to do my Pl markings on the receivers and logo work. Sent them off to be anodized and sold them for 4 times what the initial cost of the 80s were. First batch of 30 receivers was about 1/4 of the 440s purchase price with everything included. Unfortunately, I let my FFL go so im only doing firearm stuff for my self now. Found your video browsing around getting ideas of non FFL machine work I can be doing.

I see that you have experienced the basic beginner problem of leaving the chuck key in the chuck before powering on. That little scrape on the machine just outside the chuck is the proof ;-) I'm not hounding you or calling you out. That little scar is a tribute to most people that do machining. I mention it just so others will pay attention to that simple mistake. That simple mistake is mostly non threatening but it takes only one time to throw that key into your head.
@GrimstodDesh
@GrimstodDesh Жыл бұрын
Lol i have never done that. Not once. All my chuck keys have the ejector spring on them so its not possible to leave them in. What you see is just a ton of use. Tens of thousands of times hitting it with the handle as i tighten the chuck over the years.
@ericgreenwood3760
@ericgreenwood3760 Жыл бұрын
@@GrimstodDesh Sorry I assumed. I have been fortunate to not do that myself. I did buy a used lathe once that was fairly new and I knew what happened since the chuck key was slightly bent.

PM machines are made in Taiwan, the Republic of China, not over in Shanghai where all the other Commie Chinese lathes come from. They are higher quality. How do I know? They offer a 2 year warantee, not a 1 year as do all the Commie Chinese lathes. The length of the factory provided warantee tells a lot about what they think of their own products. Yes... PMs are good machines but please... they may be manufactured by ethnic Chinese but those folks are not in mainland, communist, China.
