Halloween Is Grinch Night (titled It's Grinch Night for the 1992 videocassette release and Grinch Night for the sing-a-long videocassette release) is a 1977 Halloween television special and is the prequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas! It premiered on ABC on October 29, 1977. The original voice actor for the Grinch, Boris Karloff, by then deceased, was replaced by Hans Conried, though Thurl Ravenscroft, who sang on the original special, again provided singing vocals. The songs were written by Sesame Street composer Joe Raposo.

@@PixiePrincess501 There's a theory among some fans that the Grinch's main problem is just that he has REALLY sensitive ears. As my own ears are rather sensitive too (I can't stand loud, very high- pitched noises, which I guess makes it ironic that I work in an elemwntary school, where hardly a day goes by that I don't hear a child shrilly screaming on the playground or something like that), I can relate.

The way you're describing it, it almost sounds like a haunted house experience, where 2/3 of the time is waiting to go in, and the last 1/3 is full of things constantly changing and trying to scare you, but at the end you reach the exit and know that it's all over, but it can happen again.

I saw this back when it first aired, back in 1977, but anyone noted they got a splendid new voice for the Grinch, one that had himself been hamming and sneaking away as so many characters" Since Boris Karloff had died in 1969, Hans Conreid is the Grinch here (but would die five years later himself, in 1982). As I grew up I stopped watching but my nephew ended up loving Mystery Inc and I watched it with him and was blown away, especially because the original Scooby Doo is so formulaic, that seeing it reimagined in a 2 season long story driven narrative was very unexpected and it worked very well for something that wasn't really made with that kind of narrative in mind.

The former would be the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy episode “Who killed Who?” It’s not scary or horribly dark, but rather a visual analogy; and the payoff of that analogy is beyond worth it; especially considering who they got to guest star on the episode (Betty White). I highly suggest it. The latter I want to suggest is the DuckTales (2017) Season 2 Ep 17: “Happy Birthday Doofus Drake,” to summarize without spoiling much: Doofus Drake tries to kill someone in the episode. Damn.

THis beginning is so good at building up anticipation and tension. You can feel the gearing up, the growing worry and fear. In Christmas, you hear from the narrator why the Grinch is a problem, but the Woos don't seem to take any interest and awareness of him, but in this one, they know him, fear him and prepare for him with dread and concern ( like a returning bandit or a huge destructive storm). The Grinch is someone to fear and I love it

This is probably in my top ten “dated yet timeless” made for tv specials. In the 80s and 90s there was always that indescribable distinction between a re-run, a relic, and a classic; this one somehow covers all three bases, again, because it leaves SO much up to the imagination.

I remember the first time I saw this cartoon. It was the late eighties and I was in 2nd or 3rd grade. Everyone was eating lunch in the cafeteria because it was a rainy day. A TV was wheeled in and "Halloween is Grinch Night" played. When Grandpa Josiah sang "I wouldn't go out on a night like this for a dollar and fifty cents," a chorus of kid's voices throughout the cafeteria could be heard saying "I would!" It got louder and more insistent every time the refrain was repeated and the dollar amount increased. It was annoying, but adorable.

I actually did grow up with this special, and it scared the HELL out of me the first time I saw it. I didn't watch it again until I was 15. Now I LOVE it, and I watch it every Halloween. Also, here's a fun fact: Out of all 3 of the Grinch specials, Halloween is Grinch Night was Dr. Seuss's favorite to work on. Another fun fact: Joe Raposo also wrote songs for the original 1971 version of The Electric Company.

I didn't see this special until I was an adult, but that creature in the shot at 13:28 vividly brought back a memory of reading "Oh, The Thinks You Can Think!" one night as a small boy spending the night at my grandma's house, and being terrified that a "jibboo" was lurking outside in the dark, just *waiting* to lunge up and press its horrible beak against the windows. 😱

this unlocked a deep childhood memory I forgot I had... back before Netflix or the internet was a huge thing (or at least generally in my house) all i really had was Blockbuster and our local library, which happened to carry some obscure media at some points. This was one of the specials on DvD or VHS I rented as a kid a few times and totally forgot about! It clicked as soon as I saw the beginning of the Ukariah scene, as he climbed the ladder of the grinch's wagon. Just.. dang! I must have been like 6 or 7 the last time I saw this. The animation totally took me off guard, it looks very different to me than the original special.

I bet someone could do a magnificent metal cover of the "Grinch is Gonna Get Ya" song! Oh, and a couple more things on the "It's a prequel" angle: 1. The Whos' houses and buildings and stuff seem much more primitive than they did in 'Stole Christmas,' almost Amish- esque in nature. 2. Maybe the Grinch just got lonely after this, got a new dog, and named him Max too?

As soon as you said the VA for the Grinch was the same one who played Captain Hook I literally went, "HOLY S*** IT IS!" and now I can't un-hear it, lol. I've always loved this special. Even if I was never scared by it as a kid I loved all the freaky, nightmare imagery, and even before that just the way Whoville looks, like it's no longer this quaint, peaceful little village tucked between the snowy mountains during Christmastime but this vulnerable little town with the ominous shadow of the Grinch's mountain looming over it, every citizen anxious with dread. Much as I love the Christmas Grinch special, as it was the first one I saw, this one has an entirely different "Halloweeny" feel to it that I've always found equally appealing. I also think Hans Conried was a good choice for *this* Grinch. His voice sounds appropriately menacing, and while Karloff is fantastic, his voice is more suited to a Christmas special, since his delivery makes him sound like a grandfather reading a story by a cozy fireplace (and yes, I know *Karloff* is the horror movie icon, the irony's not lost on me). It did always puzzle me though what the continuity of the three Grinch specials was supposed to be. I even stupidly took up the task of trying to figure it out once (A life? What's that?), and my timeline was 'Grinch v Cat in the Hat' came first, as the Grinch wasn't living in his cave yet but a regular house during that one; then he regresses back to his old Grinchy self prior to 'Halloween' and also relocates to Mt. Crumpet; and finally 'Christmas' where he's changed for the good... well, for good, and also Max either comes back between specials or this is Max #2, like how the Simpson's cat is Snowball II. I also spent years wondering what the hell "the euphemism" was and why that kid needed to go there so damn badly XD I was a stupid kid.

I know this is a lot longer special than the average cartoon shorts you do for the show, so I know you can't get into everything like with a Mickey or Betty Boop short, but I'm surprised you didn't talk more about that twisting shot going up Mount Crumpet. You showed it a lot, though, so I know you see the skill in it. That's always been one of my favorite shots. As for the special itself, yeah, that one was always a head trip. It's like a thrill ride that just goes up and up and up and up and then you have this giant plummet as the wagon opens up. Is it slow in the beginning? Sure? Does it drag? Sure. But I'm ok with it. It's all in the anticip... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ation.
