Nice lathe, good idea to true the flywheel in the lathe first. The FG5000 Winona Van Norman is a great flywheel grinder. I ground alot of flywheels on these machines. Nice job. Thanks for sharing. Take care, Ed.

Thanks Ed. It's also a big time saver and a grinder is super messy.

THIS IS SICK

Is this a special lube or coolant being used? Or water?

I use water and add some of the Goodson brand flywheel grinding solution. Good results and no rust.

Why did you cut it on the lathe if you still needed to grind it? After watching the grinding it was obvious the lathe didn't produce a flat and true surface.

Because the grinder take about 5 times longer than the lathe. I only use the lathe if .015 or more needs to come off. It's a lot faster, even with additional setup. With the lathe, I'm mounting in on thr ring gear surface, which isn't true. On the grinder, it's on the crank surface. I'd say this one was .002 off.

I don’t think the flywheel was true int he lathe. The hit and miss at the beginning where the flywheel was never worn tells me this. I’m sure the grinder corrected it.

Yup, I'm just using the lathe to rough it, and the grinder cuts it flat
