Nice going there Darren! I see those Mirai techniques have helped out a lot here. You use a soil mix of lava, pumice and calcined clay (?) if I saw correctly, right? Have you found any advantage for the use of calcined clay with Portulacaria? Or do you just like the orange aesthetic? I always just go pumice + lava on mine
@grobonsai
@grobonsai Жыл бұрын
It’s cooked akadama sold by Ibuki. I like having some kind of clay in the mix to hold some moisture a bit longer. Haven’t tested enough to say the roots are better etc but haven’t found a reason to change either

@grobonsai
@grobonsai 11 ай бұрын
Water, controlled release fertiliser, airy substrate, plenty of light and air movement. Agua, fertilizante de liberación controlada, sustrato aireado, mucha luz y movimiento de aire.

I just received a dwarf Jade plant today for mothers day. I have several bonsai trees, but not one of these. After watching your video, I was shocked to see you can wire one. How long approximately can you leave on the wire, since they grow fast?
@grobonsai
@grobonsai Жыл бұрын
They aren’t the best with wire. I keep it on until it needs to come off before damage is done. Letting them lose turgidity can help with bending. But be careful!

Hi Darren Can i ask what type of feed you use? And what is the best way to thicken the trunk?
@grobonsai
@grobonsai 11 ай бұрын
I use a general purpose controlled release, and plenty of it. I find the best way to thicken the trunk is in an air pruning pot, with equal parts coco coir and perlite (or pumice). Once the roots are established, they will thicken rapidly. Let it get pot bound. When growth slows up-pot without disturbing the roots very much.

Beautiful work … what is your choice for fertilizer?
@grobonsai

I use a general purpose controlled release fertiliser. I don’t mind which, they all work.

Do you do any trimming of thicker roots on this succulent?
@grobonsai

Preferably not, but very cautiously when the risk vs benefit has been carefully considered

Quick question. Should I wash the akadama, pumice and others before using them? Thank you!
@grobonsai
@grobonsai Жыл бұрын
You don’t have to, but it would get rid of the dust! I use a soil sieve but there’s always some dust remaining. Couple of tips: dry the soil before using it, dry soil is easier to work into the nooks and crannies; handle wet akadama extremely carefully, it is very delicate when wet and will turn to mush if roughly handled. Good luck with your repots!

Hello. I have a chinese elm and grow it on my balcony/terrace, but for some time the leaves have started to fall. It takes a lot of light, but I don't know if it wants more water or not. It also doesn't seem to be dying because new shoots/branches are appearing but I don't know if its normal to fall 7-9 leaves, every 2-3 days? I WOULD be very grateful if you could tell me if it is normal or not and what to do!!🙏
@grobonsai

It does sound like a watering issue, i can't be sure if it's over watered or under watered though
