Best part about this video is that you don’t vacillate endlessly about the point & are direct in giving us tips unlike other “experts” on Utube. Had no idea that they could bloom too. Will try to keep them dry during summer

Thank you very much for your feedback! Keep in mind that the climate has a lot to do with the ability to produce flower, the dryer the climate the more likely you are to see flowers on your dwarf jade.

You can practically remove all roots on portulacarias and they will grow - same goes for many other succulents

On Jades, the first root chop can be very severe, even down to no roots left. In the training stage you want to keep as many roots as possible.

I did a bunch of thick cuttings and let it dry out for weeks. I let them get morning sun and spray the soil lightly every 3 days just the top. It’s been 3 weeks and no new growth is pushing. All the leaves are looking bad too. What am I doing wrong? I tried to keep them in my cabinet for a couple days in the beginning for humidity purposes. Any suggestion? I still have a shot at having them go in just not sure what I am doing wrong.

I've rooted well over a dozen without removing any leaves. They were small cuttings . . . but I've seen people leave the leaves on larger cuttings, which also rooted. It may just be quicker when they don't have to maintain leaves while trying to grow roots.

Okay. Learned a few things. Can imagine the number of cuttings you likely planted and are growing. My big Jade had to be cut down due to damage and breakage. Cut to a height of 3”. With base diameter of 1.5 - 2”. Took 6 weeks or so before pushing out growth. Saw this video and other and shifted to bonsai/free draining soil mixture. WOW, the improvements were fantastic.

I'm in the US (born here 66 years ago), & I much prefer to call them Portulacaria afra, + their variety or cultivar name when applicable. . . . I feel it's much better than using names that eventually serve to confuse people as to what is being talked about.

To promote finer root growth, one 2 inch root cannot feed the tree as much as 10 1/4 inch roots. In bonsai finer roots are the objective.

Just as an audio production/quality tip, try to get a measure on the decibel range of your speaking voice on the recording and balance the decibel range of your music to fit that. It keeps the audio a consistent volume and stops people having to ride their volume control due to overly loud music. Also, while your speaking volume is relatively consistent, using a compressor if you're not already is generally a good idea. It amplifies the lower ranges of the volume and squishes the higher range of the volume down, again just adding to that consistent sound. Hope it helps :)

Two questions: If I plan on keeping my jade indoors should I still let it stay outside after potting a cutting? And if my cutting has leaves on the entire stem should I leave them alone for a few weeks until new growth, then when new growth forms, remove all of the leaves on the main stem and leave the top ones?
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply
@WeareTheBonsaiSupply 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jace, If you plan on growing your plants indoors all year then you don't have to move it outdoors after potting. Just let the cuttings dry for a few days and plant them, leaves or no leaves doesn't really matter.
