2021 was obviously a difficult year for many business, and grocery stores were no exception. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers have changed their shopping habits, swapping in-store trips for convenient and safe online ordering. Others have stocked up on supplies in waves, cleaning out shelves at alarming rates. Stay-at-home orders in 2020 had people eating at home more than ever before, and the grocery industry had to adapt to meet their needs. For these reasons and many more, it's not looking good for the future of these grocery store brands. Here are the stores that may not survive 2022.

With ShopRite in New Jersey the prices are are going through the roof even with their Bowl & Basket brand. For example 18 oz prunes went from $3.99 to $5.49. Practically many of their Bowl & Basket brands had price increases. Someday ShopRite prices will be like Whole Foods prices.

This scares me because I work at Dollar Tree. I can say this much. Where I am sales are booming. And we get alot of compliments on how clean we keep it there compared to others of our brand. People were shocked when they found out our prices are going up. But it's like only a quarter and possibly a few dollars on certain things. Which things will be apart on pricing. And this will mean we will be able to get higher quality things. I personally enjoy working there a good amount. Wish they offered Full Time. But it's rare. But hey I could do it. And in the time I wouldn't be Cashiering I be cleaning. Which I been told I do really good on cleaning and stocking. But yeah I say working at Dollar Tree isn't all bad. Varies of course from place to place. Where I work most people are nice and pretty passionate about crafting. Along with being very passionate about decorating for Holidays. But yeah out of all the jobs I've had over the years I think I enjoy this one the most. Sure there are days I'm upset or scared. (People can be scary.) But I like this job way better.

I've been to some sorry appearance dollar trees. As for the increase, 25% margin is a awful lot, almost like price gouging. If they say it's wages, look again, they are well known for hiring a new manager at a starting rate less than their predecessor was hired at, so much turnover. I lived in a one-location town, with a college in it, how many times 4+ years ago even, don't blame CV-19, were there temporary hours on the doors that lasted for months

I'm in the Atlantic/Cape May County area and ShopRites are always packed. Some of the resort area stores slow down in the winter, of course, but mainland stores are busy year-round and even busier in the tourist season. They're not going anywhere soon, at least not around here. They're probably the most popular supermarket in NJ. And they're building a new store in Atlantic City.

ShopRite is very much alive. It may have lost stores due to changing demographics, or in the fringes of their warehouse base in Kesbay, NJ. It is a unique chain where individuals own from 1-30+ stores and in turn own in a co-op venture, Wakefaren, that does buying, warehousing, distribution marketing, store layout and other assistance. Yes, the did discontinue pharmacies in many of their stores due to competition and staffing issues from the pandemic. Many have shifted the former pharmacy space to use with their shop at home service.

Walgreen's buying out Wrongade makes as much sense as when Popeye's bought out Church's. NEVER buy out a struggling competitor, let them die, then swoop in and take over the locations for FREE. Buying Church's is the reason that Al Copeland lost Popeyes, so I'm not surprised that Walgreen's is following in the same footsteps.

Very true, K Mart in 1976 took over many W.T.Grant stores when the W.T.Grant store chain was bankrupt & closing stores. Years later K Mart wound up like W.T.Grant, bankrupt and now no more K Mart stores in the U.S., Canada & Mexico in certain locations, and also the same for Sears as well. Save A Lot was suppose to be the answer to supermarket desserts. But bad management has allow for bad management practices. So this is not a surprise. That seems to be a trend for large chains that are going down the hole. It’s happening to Lowe’s as well. They only schedule about half the amount of employees they need at any given time shy of Memorial Day or 4th of July weekends, the CEO gets a massive salary and gives himself a six figure bonus every year and the company has lost its dominant market share status to THD, which is beating them in almost every metric

I don't agree with you that Whole Foods Market and Dollar Tree risk closure. Whole Foods Market is owned by one of the five biggest corporations in the world, Amazon can afford to keep it as a loss leader. I assume that Amazon is trying to get more customers to be Prime members. When Dollar Tree announced the price change to $1.25, the stock price soared over 10%, because it indicated that the company had pricing power. The only thing that might not survive is the name.

We have a chain here out west called Ridley's. The stores are in rural , remote towns in Idaho , Wyoming, and Utah primarily. The stores are relics from the 80s , with outdated interiors , ugly flooring, bad lighting , and most of them I've seen don't have self-checkout. The Krogers , the Albertsons of the grocery world have no interest in buying this chain , as they are often in such remote areas its probably hard to turn a profit. Being the "only game in town" offers little incentive for them to improve and update.

Shop Rite in Delaware is in trouble, customers hate the fact that not only is the pharmacy gone, but there's no cashiers anymore, it's all self checkout. I work at a grocery store in the area and we've gotten tons of new customers that are ditching Shop Rite. And no surprise about Walgreens. Locally, they started last year by reducing pharmacy hours on weekends. Then they came out with the Walgreens credit card, what a joke! Now, the pharmacy section is actually closed on weekends. I worked for Walgreens for 13 years, and there's no way they'll survive without the pharmacy sales on the weekend. The front end just doesn't do enough business to carry the store.

I thought I was watching a video on grocery stores that went off the rails into Dollar Tree, Walgreens, et al. And a 5 store NYC chain takes precedence over looking at Stop & Shop, or a fairly large nE chain, BigY. BTW--ShopRite here in western CT carries a far larger variety & quantity of products than Stop & Shop & BigY together. And the local S&S is cursed with miles of empty shelves. Since this is a 2021 video, seems like someone needs to recognize that New England and the midwest exist.

Paying additional wages was never mandated. Once certain cities began mandating hero pay, stores in those cities that would cease to be profitable closed. When you make an operating environment hostile for big businesses, they migrate to friendlier lands. Kroger is expanding. They are doing extremely well, financially. One reason for that is the fact that they are not afraid to close poor performing locations.

Honestly Florida and my area will be fine. 😁 Walgreens is thriving still in Bay County. 👍🏻 Now me being from Metro Atlanta originally not shocking about Kroger going downhill they have made some poor decisions in general including closing down and getting greedy with Lucky’s Market and Tom Thumb food mart of Florida, which 2020 changed everything on that, and Whole Foods is definitely not going nowhere they are extremely busy as hell in Destin, Florida. 😂 Dollar Tree not shocking to see them on this list, they have been extremely junky in the past several years now, and lastly Piggly Wiggly sucks, it’s amazing that any of there locations except Port St Joe, Florida are still in business, only reason I include that location from the exclusion list is because it’s a really nice location unlike most of there locations. 🤔
