Videos about Groo the Wanderer from Mad Magazine Writer and Cartoonist Sergio Aragonés. Comic Book artist Mark Evanier, Stan Sakai (who makes Usagi Yojimbo comics) and Tom Luth who is the colorist of the comics. Marvel comics used to publish Groo the Wanderer under the Epic Comics brand for artist owned comics. Before that Pacific Comics and Eclipse Comics published Groo the Wanderer. After Marvel Comics, Groo went to Image Comics for a year and for the longest time, Groo is published by Dark Horse Comics. Rufferto is Groo's Dog, Conan the Barbarian and Tarzan of the Apes have had crossover comics with Groo too.

The thing I noticed with the soldiers was their pole arms. I've seen that shape of blade with the flat shelf on the back associated with eastern European elements (the flat shelf on the back could double as a musket rest in a pinch). They aren't all exact but I saw at least one on the fray page that is a picture perfect rendition of what I've seen in this context in the past.

I came across an old mad magazine I found at a charity store. I didn't really care much for it, but one thing stood out, those little cartoons by Sergio. I was curious to find out more about Sergio and did some research. Now three months later I can't get enough of Sergio's work. I wish there were some book collections that reprint the early issues of Groo, but I don't think that will happen.

Hey! It’s great that you discovered Sergio The earliest Groo were reprinted in the Groo Chronicles in the early 90s. There are six issues and you can still find them on eBay for not crazy high prices. The Marvel run was reprinted in TPB by Marvel and Dark Horse, starting with the Adventurer, but those are getting pretty expensive, especially the DH ones. If you are willing to spend $300-$400 you might be able to buy a lot of the Marvel run on eBay. Or you can start collecting the new stuff and pick up what you can find in dollar bins. Whatever works for you, it makes for a fun hobby. 😀

First I thought it's Sergio just getting old and that's why Groo and Rufferto's lines are frail and shimmery. BUT! If you look at everything else, all the lines are as strong, swift and precise as before! All the curvy swords and spears have steady linework. So could it be that it's just Groo and Rufferto getting old and wrinkly, kinda like their creator? Groo's arms look like they actually have some lose skin because of the way they are drawn. Makes him look older. I think that just might be what's going on here.

Definitely. I wonder if Sergio just goes with all the background art, but slows down with Groo and Rufferto these days and then loses done of the fluidity. Groo’s Armas definitely aren’t the sausage balloons they used to be. The question is, is he getting old or toned? 😉

Such a great preview. Thank you. I kinda wanted Groo to meet up with Usagi but this is just as good. Am I the only one who thinks Sergio should letter Usagi? Turnabout is fair play. Also, you did get it wrong, it's pronounced "Bill Sienkiewicz". Hope this helps.

BTW - you have been pronouncing Groo incorrectly too. It's pronounced "Sienkiewicz". (okay I'll stop being silly...one day)

Oh, I guess I didn’t make that clear. Tom Luth, who I consider as part of the “original Groo Crew” (even though Gordon Kent coloured the first Groo comics) has retired and now Carrie Stracham (who’s name I can’t pronounce) is the colourists. She started with the last Groo mini series, BUT Tom Luth coloured this comic. So that’s why I consider it the last “original Groo Crew” comic.
