I don’t know what variety you grew but I grew some for the first time last year (“New Hanover” variety I believe) and they were absolutely delicious, taste just like a mild pineapple…so don’t give up. But it’s absolutely vital that you wait until the husks are completely brown and the berries are a creamy yellow all the way around. Any hint of green and they will taste a little funky.

Gotcha. I’ll put New Hanover on the list to try next year. I’m definitely not giving up. People love them so much. There’s got to be one I like. My neighbors loved them though.

I've always found wild have better flavor, but I live in Missouri were like 9 species are native so surely some are better then others I've bought them from the store as "Goldenberries" and did not like them, very funky, a little fruity, tomato like (but I don't like tomato) My mom loves tomato but she hated these from the store. I transplanted a native I found in the woods beneath a tree in my yard and though I've only been able to try one fruit from that specific plant since it was young, it was delicious!! Very fruity, sweet, pleasantly acidic and citrus. The plant species I have got much bigger this year and seem to spread by underground rhyzome because there are 6 now and at least three will be giving me several fruit this year!

From what I can tell, the husks should be allowed to kind of dry, so you want something closer to that peachy tan color, berries should be a warm gold hue with no green, and the fruits (at least from my plant, I wish I knew the species) should be fragrant, mildly tropical in scent. I've heard any green parts on these plants are mildly toxic, being in the tomato family, that's not unusual, but that may be what lends to the slight off taste when there is some green on the berries. So after I pick them up off the ground, I usually let them sit on the counter for a couple days, checking ripeness by smell and color

Each year I try a couple new varieties. I grew one last year that was actually a bit tastier and this year I’m growing giant ground cherry. I haven’t given up on them yet. I really want to like them.

It was hard to describe what we were tasting but it sure was a disappointment after I built them up so much. I’m hopeful pineapple will be better. I am going to try them in pie filling if I harvest enough.

I grew ground cherries for the first time this year.. IMO they taste better after they've been off the plant for a few weeks, an they're completely yellow with no green.

Oh. Well I’ve been saving them in a big basket so I can do something like make a pie but I’ll have to go and give them another try. Some of them have been down there for over 6 weeks. I hope I feel the same as you about them. The plants themselves once they got going have been great and have just kept pumping out fruit with me being completely hands off.

This is a hilarious review. Couple of things. On the ground or not, the green ones are not ready to be eaten and actually contain the same toxin as green potatoes do, don't be eating green ones lol. Curious as to what variety this was bc nothing I have tasted ever tasted remotely like anything you guys described haha, except for the pineapple and tomato comment. I would try some different varieties, and maybe even try cape gooseberries aka goldenberries aka peruvian ground cherries. They are similar, but different. Worth a try even if ground cherries aren't your thing.

I tried a different variety of ground cherry this year and I plan on trying a couple new ones this year too. Ben and I actually liked the one I grew this year quite a bit more. I’ll keep growing different ones until I find the one I can’t live without. Thanks so much for sharing this info and your thoughts. You are appreciated 😊

Hi Travis. I’ve tried to grow both varieties you’ve mentioned last year but sadly was unsuccessful with germination. I still have seeds for both and know that I know a heat mat does the trick when germinating I’m ready to try again. I still like growing them because they produced so much food. And I loved sharing them with neighbors. Thanks for watching 😊

Those were under ripe. The green berries can be toxic. They berry should be yellow when ripe, and the husk should be dry and brown. 😊

I grew a new variety this year that both me and my husband liked much much more. It was very citrusy. I tell ya what though that when they say once you grow them in your garden one year you’ll never have to grow them from seed again is completely true. There were absolutely a million volunteers everywhere this year.

Hi there. No I didn’t pick them off the plant. All of these, and falling to the ground. I did try them throughout the season to see if the flavor would change as the plant got older. But no it didn’t. I’m not giving up on ground cherries though I’m growing a new variety this year strawberry ground cherry. So hopefully I will like it more. But I know there are several more that I’d like to try. There’s gotta be one that I like. They are just so prolific with fruit. I had neighbors that loved them though, so they never went to waste. 😀

You picked them far too early. They should be like brown paper on the husk and the fruits should be bright orange. Then they taste amazing, like concentrated orange.

Ok, I grew up in Porto Velho-RO Brazil. On the middle of Amazon Rain forest. Eating those kind berry we call - CANAPÚ. I don't really know why people here in USA think it's ok to change the name of the Berries from South America. Well, BTW, I was found funny watching you all tasting the fruit. Any of you, I knew, gonna find it weird, and I was right. All the berries you picked up weren't ripen yet. It's not true that the berry be on the ground is ripe. Even if you found it on the ground, you need make sure the pod is like paper. When it is like paper, it's gold, almost orange inside. Let them for some days waiting, until be like paper. It's that good to eating. Otherwise, will be oilen and bitter. When it's ready to eat, you need clean, not washed. Clean wit paper towels or a fabric. The kids on the Jango, clean it in their clothes 😂😂😂😂 like I did it all my life!😅❤
