Hi great video. I like your happy and inviting attitude toward new foods. Makes me happy to watch. I don't know if anyone has told you but the cape gooseberry is a variety that isn't native to the USA. the ground cherry is smaller and is native. you can buy the seeds from heirloom seed suppliers if you want to grow them. thanks for sharing.

I have been growing these for a few years in Pennsylvania. Mine have a sweet pineapple kind of flavor with a hint of musk. They are super easy to grow. I don’t even need to replant because fruit that falls to the ground puts enough seeds in the soil for the next year! I also grow the tomatillo’s you mentioned. Same thing, super easy and great for Mexican cooking! I never water either of them! The rain does it all!

In one of my favorite books, "Stalking the Wild Asparagus," author Euell Gibbons gives recipes for jam and pie using this fruit. We have lots of them growing around here in the midwest - mostly found in scrubby, poor land. I've never tried the recipes, but I bet it would be very good. I'm enjoying your fruit tastings very much!

Those little things are amazing when you cook with them! Sautee them whole (I used them in shakshuka) and it completely changes the flavor. The sweet, acidic fruit taste cooks away and they become these succulent little butter balls that burst in your mouth. Absolutely delicious!

I grow these. Love them and they are really good for you. Makes wonderful jam. Lots of vitamins also. Wonderful fruit. They are available everywhere here in BC, Canada. They are related to the tomateo. Taste much like a gooseberry so they may be related. Very easy to grow. If I can find some seeds I bet you can grow them. I planted the last of my seeds this year. They make a really large bush so two or three bushes are all you need.

My parents grow these every year and we sell them at our local farmers market! Definitely need to have an acquired taste for these berries, well for me at least. I became to love them tho! Recommend if you want to try to eat them when they're most ripe. They grow on little bushes so usually the ripen ones are the ones that fall on the ground or the ones that look "old". Also you can pick them and then let them dry out in the sun to ripen them for a few days and they become so sweet and delicious! You'll know they're ripe because the cover or the paper-like lantern isn't green but a faded yellow and also dirty because they fall on the ground but give them a open and rinse then they're good to eat fresh! You could make a lot of things with them so I love them!

There is a closely related plant we have around here in my part of New York, though it's not indigenous. It's Physalis alkekengi, called Chinese/Japanese lantern and winter cherry. The papery lantern part is much bigger than ground cherries and bright orange and the fruit inside is also orange, but very small and is not edible. They're sold as decorations, like an element in a dry flower arrangement or wreath. They're really neat. I found some growing around a bush and picked a bunch, the color has faded now, alas.

Ground cherries are native to our part of northwestern Arkansas. Few people notice them, however, because the plant is only 12 to 18 inches tall, and the fruit is hidden under the leaves and inside papery calyxes. Few people here know what they are. The wild ones around here taste much sweeter than the cultivated "goldenberry" variety that is found in Walmart produce.

HI Emmy! Here in Sweden you can always find them in the market! But I'm not sure how they are in the U.S but here they are quite sticky, and oily once you peel back the leaves from around the fruit. The fruit here also is more orange in color. Maybe having to do with the origin where the Physalis was grown. Here in Sweden they mostly come from Colombia, South America from what I have seen. Thank you, for all the cool and amazing videos as I really enjoy watching them!
