The philodendron hederaceum micans is a velvety variety of the hederaceum family. It is tolerant to a wide range of conditions and can produce different characteristics on their leaves depending on how you grow them. In this episode I share with you the full care tips for these, how to achieve a full hanging basket of them, and then proceed to propagate them in water, soil, and also propagation box. I also do wet stick propagation of just bare nodes to show you how its done! I share the results at the end of the video so you can see which method works best!

Great vid as always! I personally really like the mature form of the Micans. I live in Hawaii and we have these things growing huge in the wild! Mature forms turns green and keeps that velvet feel and reminds me of a glorosium with less veins

filling the soil up over time makes so much sense somehow :O what ive noticed with plants like that where you put alot of them into one pot is that they can become a little unstable somehow, especially when you repot or if they hang down alot and its just those tiny stems flopping around in the top part of the soil. i need to try that. if they have multiple root points that way the entire plants rootball should be a lot mor stable

This is the best propagation explanation. I’m literally taking notes 📝. With your “trick”, when you say that there will be many nodes buried using your method, do you mean the original 8? If not, can you explain how you end up with more nodes? Thank you, Oh Grand Teacher Of Plants 🙏!!!

I havent watched the video in years so Im not sure what the question refers to 😅 nodes are existing on a used plant stem, and new nodes are produced with each subsequent new leaf. The only way to get new nodes is when you get leaf growth 😀

Hey Sean! This is my second time watching this video because I am attempting to propagate some Micans cuttings now to make the mother plant bushier plus start a new plant. I am going out today to purchase a large bin to put some of them in soil (and then into the bin as you have demonstrated here). It appears that the ones in your bin grew healthier leaves with a richer green color🙂)...I haven't done well with Spaghnum Moss props, but I plan to try again for more practice with it. LOL.🙂 I have done better propping other plants in perlite. Have you ever tried propagating in Perlite? Thanks for a great channel, Sean! We all enjoy your explanations and your sense of humor as well! Greetings for the U.S.!! 🇺🇲🌴🧡

Finally you talk about micans!!! 😆I love micans so much. However I like the dark velvety leaves with maroon back a lot more than just green. 😍 Seems like some just have darker leaves than others. I have three at home. One dark, one medium, and one green. I wonder if there is a way to encourage the dark velvety leaves more. I heard that lower light would make the leaves darker, and I tried that with the greener one. Its leaves seem to get a little bit darker (also smaller), but the other two still have darker leaves while growing in an area with more light. 😂 Also maybe it's just me, I always think the sun stressed micans leaves look like they are yellowing. 🤣
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 2 жыл бұрын
Yepppp they become light green when sun stressed. It is wise to assume that lower light will encourage darker leaves, but it mught get longer internodes and smaller leaves

Your plants grow so well, & fast in Indonesia.l must say, l'm a bit jealous... 😅👌 I live in Melbourne Australia, in an Old house with tiny Windows, so mine grow quite slower unfortunately. But they get there eventually. Thanks again, & l can't wait for your next video.... 👍❤🇦🇺😊🐨

Hi. What can I do if my leaves turn yellow for overwatering? Just wait for it to dry and water it less in the future or I should do something else?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 2 жыл бұрын
Reduce watering frequency gradually, do not let it go completely dry suddenly as it might also die of shock. After 2-3 months you should be able to let it dry out completely between watering, which they thrive in.

One node propagation should ALWAYS be last resort. Aka trying to take emergency cuttings. If the material is in even halfway decent condition like this is, you should always aim for a 5-6 node. 2-3 under, 2-3 over. Preferably 5-6 nodes. 2-3 buried. Period.
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 11 ай бұрын
I have a lot of success with one node cuttings… with about 80% of the cuttings surviving. But you are right, commercial growers take 2-3 nodes on average and it must have been the most efficient.

Always look forward to your videos! Quick question: is it normal for the leaves to have like water spots? I noticed even if I bottom water the plant this still happens to my micans

This is probably them trying to transpire/guttate additional water. Could be sign of a bit of overwatering but its quite normal for leaves to do that 😀
