The last stage is to plant my Baobab seeds in bonsai soil! I'll know in the next few days if all is well. Many thanks to Heike Pander for helping me out!
My Orchard truck is back in for repairs on the box and the tailgate, I'll have lots of work for it when it's done!
Today's update is my Fusion Ficus bonsai, it needs a trim!
Our Orchard team is planting the small Larch seedlings in our plot in the community gardens to get them strong enough to go in the ground for the First Nations Site!

Hi Nigel Baobabs are easy to keep important is what you already have quick draining soil , when Autumn comes and leaves start going a little yellow stop watering completely then let the soil dry out completely make sure it’s dry then you can put them inside the house can be in a dark place just make sure no moisture must get to them .take them out in Spring and put in full Sun when you see buds water.hope this helps

I already ordered some baobob seeds, it will be interesting to see if they survive in the hot dry Madrid air. And now I MUST get a Julian's bouganvilla... Thanks for the inspirations!

Several interesting sagas in today's video: baobab seeds, truck and First Nations Garden. Great updates. Also enjoyed seeing the little bird, Robin. Your "Frankenficus" is definitely looking better in each update. So nice to see Julian's bougainvillea in flower. Since there are no bonsai shows perhaps your club should consider an online show. Some of the orchid societies are doing that activity.

Yeah, another commenter mentioned the importance of well draining soil. In my warm climate, I also had a few seeds and seedlings rot. I think that getting the moister right can be a little tricky. I notice that when the seedlings have leaves, watering works very well. When the seedlings drop their leaves, I almost completely stopped watering and had to hide the seedlings from the rain. This has worked for me so far. But, I find the long leafless period to be rather mysterious. If anyone has any more detailed information about the annual care cycle for baobabs, please share in a reply or link.

Dont worry about the browning on the seed leaf, as they grow the seed leaf will still have a little brown on it but itll be fine. If they grow in an Irish window like that, Nigel Saunders will have no problemo lol

Hi Nigel, I don't want to give false information but I feel like due to the adaptations of these Baobab trees, they are probably more suited to a warm dry climate as opposed to a wetter or colder climate, they don't look too hard to grow and it is important to check which species of Baobab you have. Although most Baobabs do occur in Africa, there is one species that occur in Australia, the Adansonia gregorii (although I've never seen one here before but similarly shaped Brachychiton rupestris) so that may have an impact also for the care of the plant.

Nigel I've grown baobab trees from seed and now two years old and doing well, I hope you don't mind me saying this but I think it's too hot in your greenhouse and your cooking them. I didn't get any smell with mine when doing them in damp paper and the roots only took a couple of days to grow between half to one inch long. I did mine in my kitchen at around 70f to 75f and got success with everyone of them, I still have some more seeds I had forgotten about so I think now I will use them up.

@@TheBonsaiZone your welcome Nigel and hope you have good success, I forgot to say that I also used a plastic food holder with lid then put the kitchen roll paper in that, I then moistened the paper put the seeds with outer shell removed as you did onto the paper and folded the paper over the top then put the lid on and then put in the warmest place in my kitchen and that worked very well. Love watching your videos 👍

Personal experience, peeled baobab seeds are super prone to rot. If any of them starts to smell, separate everything and plant at the first sign of the little root sprouts. Some of yours look a little too far gone, but hope they grow. I got 2 to germinate and within 1 month they grew 15cm.

I was given a whole pod that is 20 yrs old and have tried unsuccessfully three times to start them. I have about 10 left so am going to try another 5! I soaked them last time but didn't score them. Even though the pod is so old the seeds are still white and alive and last time they just didn't break the coating so from this video I think I just need to do that manually. If they rot when you peel them can I just rub them on sandpaper too thin the shell?
@marcogiuberto4570
@marcogiuberto4570 4 жыл бұрын
@@cathymadsen2930 I don't know what caused the rot, but what i would do is germinate the peeled white inner part in separate paper towels so they don't cross contaminate. Any smelly ones should be binned ASAP.

Hello Nigel, I've heard you call your ficus Medium Leaf Ficus in your videos and you may have even told me a while back it was a "Too Little". I am trying to aquire one just like yours leaf size and all. Can you please tell me if that truely is "Too Little?" or are you not sure?....Perfect leaf size in my opinion. Good luck with those Baobab seedlings, looking forward to the updates.

I'm going to plant a lot of trees in my backyard because it's so big. 30 baobab trees might be in the plans. They are large and quite gorgeous. I want to plant some trees that cast shadows. So, I have two inquiries: first, does this tree lose its leaves each year, and second, if so, for how long? Furthermore, wouldn't my property appear unattractive if all the trees lost their leaves? Since it would resemble a savanna or scrubland in my thoughts... 😅

Shame about the rot on those baobab seedlings. Looks like maybe TOO humid? Who'd have thought that would be your problem! Looks like a couple of them are doing alright though. Wishing them the best of luck and looking forward to what you make of the baobab in the future!
