I planted a seedling in 2004 and after 20 years only grafts, including a Lucuma graft, have blossomed. My blossoms have gone past the stage shown here and opened up. I'm using a natural bristle artist brush to try and pollinate as many Stigmas as possible. I have Trompo and Fairchild II blossoming now and I'm assuming the early Stigma only blossoms are ready to pollinate. I haven't gotten fruit yet, first year with many blossoms. Because the blossoms pass through the development stages with staggered timing I assume nature expects the insects to find the open blossoms, then covered in pollen crawl across the new Stigmas pollinating along the way while looking for another open blossom. I try to Follistatin 315 this in the cool of the morning as I live in the low hot dry desert in Arizona where no fruit can be hoped for without effective intervention. How much receptivity can the pollen and Stigmas offer me? Not much!

Thanks for the video Jeff. I am experimenting with fruiting Silas Woods sapodilla as well in the trivalley. You continue to prove that many of these trees can actually thrive here (and how to do it successfully). Great videos. Have you tried growing pitangatuba? They grow well in this area and have some tasty fruit.

Thank you for your video. To pollinate the female flower, you squeeze it easily then, transfer to the male flower, right?

Maybe Sapodilla rhymes with whichever way someone would pronounce tortilla. My Indian neighbor calls it a Chikoo, the Mexican Grocery store down the street calls it a sapota. I bought some at a Vietnamese grocery store under the name Sapote, and I just tried the fruit for the first time last week. Delicious, and seeds are planted.

I agree, rolling l”s, But I’m thinking however someone wants to pronounce it is ok by me!

Hi.. I live in southern California and my plant is doing OK.. What I mean is new leaves come when I fertilize and compost but the eventually the leaves turn brown and fall off and there's only small amount of leaves at any given time point.. Also I felt the summer was harsh on the plant.. Having said that the 2 year old shrub just gave small buds that I will pollinate. I had 2 questions.. Do I need to protect the plant in winter? We get up to 35 degrees at night Does it need shade next summer? We get at least 2 weeks of temps above 100 and more then a month above 95.. Thank you for your replies..

Hi Jeff, it looks like your tree is doing great. I have a question, im looking into planting one but trying to figure out a location due to yard space. Is your tree planted next to your house? Any concerns with the house structure? I have a space available thats about 10 ft away from the house. Wondering if that would be ok.

My tree is about 15 ft away. I wouldnt plant one say closer than 3 ft away from foundation, they can get big?

@TropicalGardenGuy I have sillas wood that I would try to keep pruned yearly. 3 ft isn't bad though, I think I can make that work! Thanks for your response.

Hello, that is interesting what you did to the Sapodilla flower buds. I just bought an AIBU tree. Came home, done some research and most growers said I need to have 2 or more trees for cross pollinating. Do you grow AIBU tree? Any advice would be grateful.

This is my most favorite fruit. I have an Alano Sapodilla tree that has been in the ground for over 8 years. It has a lot of flowers, yet I have tried many ways to hand pollinate it. NONE set fruit. I am very frustrated. I wonder why none of the flowers sets fruit? I live in Chula Vista, San Diego, California.
