Hello from 🇨🇦 and now a new Subscriber. I started from seed 4vwks ago and the have 3 stems already. They have started drooping so came to KZfaq to figure it out. Your voice is so easy to listen to ☺️ and you have so much great information. I think I might be giving them more fertilizer than they need. Wish me luck. I hope they get as beautiful as yours.

First of all, thanks for subscribing. Much appreciated :) My lupins started drooping when they were exposed to too much direct sunlight. Not sure if that's the case? Otherwise it might be the fertilizer, because especially young plants do not do well with too much fertilizer. Anyway, I hope they'll recover :)

Hi The Suburban Gardenista; in my experience, Russell Hybrid Lupins do not do well in containers long-term. I have grown R-H Lupins off and on since the late 1990s/early 2000s. It is a favourite of mine. Established plants will not transfer well as it has a long tap root, which can become easily damaged if trying to relocate. If you can, buy a plant and place it in your garden. Lupins will self-seed reliably in good garden soil. This will not help if you are a "balcony gardener". I have been transplanting self-seeded seedlings from the plant introduced into my garden last year into 4" pots for the last week or two. I should end up with 50+ when done. I hope to sell these plants next year. I would also suggest that if you try to germinate R-H Lupins, you soak the seed in warm water for at least 24 hours to help break down it's hard seed-coat. They will germinate easier. There is a wealth of info about this plant and how to grow it successfully on the internet. Good luck and enjoy! May you have may successes.

@@anthvanmanen thanks so much for all the great info and tips! I will have to look that variety up specifically - I'm not entirely sure what kind I have as it was given to me. I'll give it a try in a taller planter to account for the taproot. Fingers crossed I get some lovely blooms! Thanks again 😊

When invasive plants "escape," it's mostly due to birds eating the seeds and then pooping them out somewhere else where they start to grow unmanaged. So unfortunately, growing them in containers doesn't prevent this from happening (unless you keep them indoors). Lupines grow to 1-2 feet wide and have deep roots, so be sure to get a pot big enough to accommodate for this!
@GardeningwithTill
@GardeningwithTill 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's a good point, that I didn't consider. Thanks for pointing it out. From what I heard in Iceland at least, the spread of lupines is particularly due to the natural spread of seeds. But I reckon birds can play a role there as well.

Thank you for this! I'm in hot and humid Washington, D.C., and planted lupine seeds, container variety, last spring. I got leaves but no flowers. We've had a cold winter. I don't see any leaves emerging yet. Also lemon balm took root in one of the pots, so I'm excavating that! I hope the lupines come back, if not, should I try again with more lupine seeds?
@GardeningwithTill

I planted the lupins from my balcony in my mother's garden and they're just starting to re-emerge. There are currently four leaves on the lupines. Wait a bit longer and otherwise, try it one more time with the lupine seeds. Lupins don't do that well in hot and humid climates, so this might be one of the issues. If possible, place the container in a protected spot.

My lupins plants I bought all died in the ground this summer, their leaves were all withered and twisted... You’re welcome :) Regarding the leaves: this really depends on your local climate. In the areas where I have lived (London, West Germany) it has been sufficiently warm in the winter months for the lupins to keep their leaves. In other areas they may lose their leaves over the winter months.

Thanks for this. My potted lupins have unfortunately never survived past their first year! Something seems to kill them. Root rot? Some kind of disease? I’m not sure. I would love to keep them alive. Weevil larvae ate the roots of mine twice. Once in autumn and one time in winter. The adult beetles seem to dislike the leaves of the lupin so after they finish their transformation to beetles they move to greener pastures like fuschias lillies primulas. The adults are nocturnal and black in colour so they are really hard to spot and kill. They also drop on the ground if they detect movement on the plant. The lupin aphid is very annoying pest. It is way more bigger than the most aphids.

I’ve seen lupins with gigantic leaves before. That’s not necessarily unusual. In some cases, too much fertiliser may encourage excessive leave growth. Not sure about the size of the leaves though in this case.

How many seedlings can I put in the same pot?
@valerie6374
@valerie6374 2 жыл бұрын
Lupine plants must be spaced 1-2 feet apart because they grow to this size (your seed package should tell you exactly how far apart to space your exact type). I would not put more than one seedling in a pot, unless you thin them down to one after they start to sprout from the soil (planting more than one and thinning down is common practice due to the odds that some seeds just won't grow. Sometimes I plant 2 and then only one sprouts). One plant will produce up to about 5 flower spikes, so you really don't need more than one plant in a pot.
