How to grow apple trees from seed. I took organic honey crisp apple seeds from a store bought apple, put them in the fridge for 6 weeks (cold stratification), and sprouted 6 apple tree seedlings. These will NOT grow up to be honey crisp apples due to the diverse genetics of apples and cross pollination, but each seed is a UNIQUE variety. Likely, they won't produce great apples.. but they might! So I will let them grow and perhaps in years I will be naming my own apple variety.

Three and a half years ago, I planted a seed from a Granny Smith apple. The tree was growing vigorously that it started to bloom at year two but no fruit, at year three, it formed fruitlets but fell to the ground, and today it has eleven Granny Smith apples.

Nice! They're technically not Granny Smith's since apples don't grow true. It's a brand new, never before seen variety.

I was concerned about watching a video on growing apples from apple seeds, but I should have known you would cover all the issues I've heard about, and then some. I loved the shower curtain solution and the "have fun with our kids" part. Another helpful video!

Its definitely a low odds gamble. They may not grow good fruits but I will have planted 6 new trees, they will likely flower for the bees, and they can help pollinate my grafted trees

Have you ever tried propagation balls? I bought various sizes but haven't actually used them yet. This will be the year I do! Thanks!

I'm growing three various apple trees from seed. Two of them are over a years old now. Hopefully they will help each other to cross pollinate.

Ive got the 6 I started inside, 2 direct sown, and a plum direct sown. They likely wont produce fruit but there's always a chance! They're getting beat up by aphids right now whereas the native apple tree seedlings are doing fine.

Apple trees need to go through a frost before germination to make it faster. I've heard to freeze them first. Mine germinated in a day after a two day freeze

The seeds need an extended time of cool temps. Most apples get refrigerated so that mimics a winter scenario.

How about fertilizing? Any other care used to make it grow? I have little apple trees that won’t grow more than 4 inches. I planted from seed, started inside. They are living but not growing.

How big is your container? These solo cups only allowed them to grow to a foot tall. After they went in the ground they're 2.5 feet. Pot size restricts the tap root.

I didnt fertilize when I planted. Never do with trees. They must get accustomed to their environment. After established compost or chop n drop on the soil is efficient. The roots will branch out to find fertility.

I just eat apples. I don’t grow them. Here’s a fun tip. Always start at the bottom of the apple and never at the center. You eat everything including the core and seeds. I eat everything except the stem. You should try eating apples that way.

Likely they will produce crab apples or no fruit at all. BUT there is a chance they may be an edible apple and I can always graft onto the tree. Some of these are getting rust but there is 1 that is doing great.
