Growing cruise industry latest in Hawaii's tourism economy

One major bright spot in the local tourism picture is the cruise business. Ships are becoming a more popular way to tour the islands and that's proving to offer a boost to Hawaii's economy. Alina Lee has more.

Our first trip to the islands was 20 years ago on an NCL ship. It’s an easy way to get a feel for the different islands for first timers. We’ve flown over and stayed in hotels several times since. Our vacation money these days goes a lot further in Europe. While it’s not lush and tropical, the Balearic islands, specifically Mallorca, are wonderful. We’ll get back to Hawaii someday - the air time from California is less than half of that to Europe; that’s a plus.

I live in Punchbowl neighborhood, and I can hear the cruise ship blast.

Hawaii is just to expensive, and crime is high. High taxes. Why spend more money when it's not worth it.

Will locals complain and diminish the cruise industry because of native coral species similar to why locals discontinued the Super Ferry???

Yay for Floating Cesspools!!! These are the kinds of tourists Hawai'i really needs. Cheap people who don't tip and only want to take the free shuttle to Wally World!!!

Cruise creatures aren't really an economic boon. They just disembark, walk around town and go back on board the ship. Unless you consider that a cruise ship dump 30,000 gallon of raw sewage into the ocean per day a good thing for the islands.
