We are struggling with growing food while finishing our home build.
Sometimes you can't do all the things (well) and that's fine.

Some of your plants are cool weather crops & some are warm weather crops. Depending on your planting zone, they should be planted at different times. Examples of cool weather crops would be peas, lettuce, & spinach. Examples of warm weather crops would be tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash & beans. A lot of plants hate being overly wet as well.

As you know I was overseas last month, but it sounds like the weather has a lot to do with why your plants aren’t doing too well! If lettuce is doing well… it was too cold for other crops like peppers and tomatoes!! They love the hot weather!! I also remembered you had amazing soil last year too!! ( that’s why I wanted to know where you got it! Hopefully, the plants will do better for you as we get into hotter months! Btw, winter melon plants love lots of water!

Your right, lettuce is a cool crop. Look up your first frost date,make a list of what you want to plant and how long it will take(Roughly) then count backwards, this will give you your last day to plant list, it will help you to decide what you still have time to do, what to leave for this year and next year it will allow you to decide if you can get second crops in areas as earlier crops are havested.

Thanks. Yeah it’s all the same stuff we’ve planted the last 2 seasons that did well 🤷🏼‍♂️ Soil definitely needs some work too.

Well at least your getting some grows going, been so hot & dry for us here in Texas unless your into eating CACTUS garden is tough this year for us, we are getting our fruit trees planted & going though. I am still working on the house on HOT days, cool mornings are for working on the shop & now on a tangent putting up an above ground pool to break the heat.

It will grow! I bought a bunch of starts for my garden. My garden is juuuust starting 😆. You can call this year your "Nova Scotia Garden." Have you thought about using the chicken manure as compost?
@LittleMountainLife
@LittleMountainLife 2 жыл бұрын
Haha! Yes I have a pallet ‘bin’ adjacent to the coop but I’m not organized enough to turn the pile and also keep in that one place. Chickens always get to it and spread it everywhere. 🤦🏼‍♂️😆
@ODriscolls
@ODriscolls 2 жыл бұрын
@@LittleMountainLife the chickens spread ours too! That's actually good for it. You don't have to turn it, the chickens are doing it for you. Hose it down occasionally and rake it up. That's good stuff!

@@ODriscolls yeah it’s the raking/piling the compost back up after they spread it that I suck at 🙃🤦🏼‍♂️

Aha! Now I know who got all of the rain that passed by me. I wondered where all that predicted rain went! (I'm west-ish of you by an hour or two). Then it turned so crazy hot. My starts were great in the house, but then I think I kept them too long inside and I don't know how to take care of young plants apparently. I can't believe I have ZERO ripe tomatoes this year. I usually can grow tomatoes no matter what. Not this year. :(

@calvarycustoms6681
@calvarycustoms6681 2 жыл бұрын
@@LittleMountainLife Yes, the watering system has been working. I don’t know what the issue is, but Out of all the Hoss Seeds I’ve planted in the past three seasons, the only crop that is producing is my Mustards and my Collards. I’m in SoCal, so possibly it’s just too hot out here to grow much with this method. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I'm feeling this right now too. I'm so behind on the garden and any food we're getting is eggs from the chickens or output from the perennials. Hang in there man. I know it's frustrating but you'll be able to spend more time growing and raising food soon enough.

You didn't do anything that probably the majority of homesteaders have done. We often fail to prioritize correctly. I'm guilty myself of taking on too much at once or starting the wrong project at the wrong time. Live and learn.
