Growing Garlic From Bulbils - Winter Planting Experiment - Update

This is a update to my first growing GARLIC from Bulbils with Giant White Russian hard neck garlic that I started from the garlic cloves 3 years ago. This Growing Experiment is my first attempt growing garlic from the bulbils that some call garlic flower seeds. Bulbils are not true seed. I know how to plant garlic bulbs in the fall but have never tried starting garlic from bulbils. If it works the the increase will be a garlic explosion saving lots of money and gives me a very lazy and easy way to plant garlic and secure our garlic needs for the future.Can you grow lots of garlic on the cheap? Be sure to follow along our garlic bulbils growing from start to finish and see. This is not planting garlic seeds but planting lots of garlic from growing garlic scapes and collecting the garlic bulbils from the garlic flower head to replant for more of the same garlic in abundance. All part of our homestead prepping.

I’m happy for you guys with such a great garlic plantation in the making. I plant mine on Veterans Day as my father in law did.

Here in the Thumb of Michigan with our short growing season we plant individual garlic toes or cloves on Labor Day weekend which gives them 2 full months to get started before cold weather hits. They winter over uncovered & will continue growing in spring. Later on most will curve around & develop the Kremlin heads or flower tops. You can either let them go to seed to collect & start another batch from seed in Sept or cut off the Kremlin heads & this will allow the bulbs to get bigger instead of feeding the nutrients to the seeds. We originally started with 4 bulbs & now average around 150 harvested bulbs that we consume. Replanting again on Labor Day, winter over & start regrowing in spring, harvest Aug 6th & repeat over & over again. Pickled Garlic can take the place of pickles at the lunch / dinner table & proves invaluable for health benefits. Hope this helps out somewhat for the newbies out there who want to try growing their own Garlic.

So cool! You got me motivated to try the bulbil planting. Right now I just save about a third of my harvest and replant. The amount of garlic I use would cost me a fortune if I had to buy it. I use the scapes in cooking, fermenting and pesto etc. but I always miss a few and end up with some bulbils. Just scooped a spoonful of 2 year old fermented chopped garlic, into my dinner, yum!!

This is what I want to do. It saves so much money. Garlic is nearly 30 bucks a kilo where I live so why not grow it. It seems easy to grow but I have had issues in the past growing it but that’s cos I didn’t know what I was doing lol. I planted them in spring 😂 oh well I’m going to try doing it properly now. I can’t wait to get my next batch going 😊

I have over 40 elephant garlic plants. But I am planning to plant 500 to 1000 garlic plants next year. So, instead of planting garlic cloves, I will let the garlic plants flower and plant their bulbils instead. I don't want to buy more bulbs cause they are expensive. I don't eat a ton of garlic. I just want to plant them in one of my acres of barren land to keep crazy critters, like rabbits, voles, moles, ground squirrels, deer,.. away. Plus I can interplant garlic with flowers like daisies, black eyed susans, and even trees and shrubs etc etc. LOL

That’s what I’m doing this year, planting the seeds of my elephant garlic. What a lovely coincidence!!! I planted two heads last year and each one of them gave us a beautiful flower, which became a lot of seeds. I’ll do that on Veterans Day, like I do every year. Happy 👨🏼‍🌾

Oh no....don't toss them....You shouldn't let the scapes grow if you don't plan on using the bulbils, they take energy away from the growth or your garlic bulb. You can eat the bulbils as well like in a salad or maybe a stir fry. We do and the scapes as well. Thanks.

3 Basket Living we harvest and eat the scapes every year. But always seems like there are some we miss or are late comers and they bloom. I grow about 500 heads of garlic a year

It's always great when an experiment works out just as you hoped! Good luck with the garlic. I wish we could plant already!!! Still got a bit of snow and the ground is still frozen solid :)

Well it's a start. It ain't over yet. No big hurry dave....I dropped these things in the ground in the winter just to do something with them. We best enjoy the 4 seasons while we can....You know we will all be crying before too long wishing for cooler weather when that heat starts to kick our butts.

@@3basketliving Take it as a learning experience. Next time you will do it differently. I need to get a garden in this year the past two I haven't had one.
