Growing Moringa - The First 30 Days

I'm giving the Moringa Oleifera another try. It's commonly called the "Tree of Life" because of its high nutritional content. So I'm planting more seeds to see if I can get some good trees going and be able to use the leaves as a nutritional supplement. After the first 30 days, they look pretty good.

I know this is an old video. But just a tip. Moringas have a very delicate tap root and if they hit the bottom of the container for very long, it really stunts their health. Even when you plant the seed it is best to do it in something that is more than six inches deep and then uppot frequently to keep the taproot from reaching the bottom of the pot.

Nice. My sister just gave me one from seed. In a glass jar. I can see a few roots. Noticed how delicate they looked. Afraid to transplant but I think it's the safest bet because it's over 3× taller than the tiny jar. She's new but she has potential 😆 hence the glass jar. I sent her a screenshot of the comment. She said that's really gtk. She listens to my advice but it doesn't hit home until she sees other wise advice 😆. Thanks!

Its been awhile Larry. I've been planning one, but haven't gotten around to it. Right now, they are starting to shed leaves. Its a roller coaster with these things. They look good, then bad, then good, and bad again. Without a doubt, the most challenging thing I've ever grown.

Thanks. I'm gonna transplant a few of them directly into the ground inside one of my greenhouses. I try to maintain temps above 50 during the winter, so they should be able to survive. I'd like to get in a position where I could pick a handful of leaves each day. But thats gonna take a lot more trees than what I have right now.

You can buy seeds online at a few different places. It prefers warm weather. So if you're in a cold area, they need to be brought in when it gets cold. I've heard of them growing outside in TX and FL, and making it thru the winter.

Yes they are. Supposedly the like 70+ degrees. I can't provide that overnight, so I expect to see them slow down. I do have a few ideas for keeping the warm though. Good luck up there. We're expecting about 36, so maybe some light frost.

Thanks. If you seed them outside, they'll be fine. The direct sunlight deal comes in when you start seeds indoors first. Then, they need to be hardened off before getting full sun.

Not a lot of water. Just enough to keep them from drying out. I tried to keep the temps around 80 or so for germination. That really helped them to come up pretty fast.

Great video. Love the Xmas lights idea, never would have thought of it. Good info, thanks for sharing. I will grow them in my house in NY this winter and again in spring. Heck, four months of very warm weather in NY should produce a bumper crop of Moringa just like any other plant or veggie, I believe. Can't wait - maybe 100 plants then I can save the leaves to last all winter. That's my idea for now.

After you get a couple sets of leaves, I think they'd be ok to transplant. And the 12 inch pots should be fine for a few months. Depending on temperatures, they might need something bigger later on.

I haven't eaten enough to really notice a difference. However, if you want more energy, start the day with fresh vegetable and fruit juice. I do that fairly often, and it really helps if I do it for several days in a row. I just toss whatever veggies I have into the juicer and drink about a quart. It takes a few days for your system to get used to it though, so go easy at first.

The leaves are generally harvested and dried. Then made into a powder to be added to food. I haven't done that. I just eat the leaves right off the plant. Its a tree that needs warm weather to survive. So its hard to grow outside in a lot of the country.

Sounds like a plan. I'll keeping watching and hope for the best. Who's to say your idea could be a break through. Just because they do it one way doesn't mean that their way is the only way. My trees are in pots, I did move them so the rain doesn't drown them and added a little bone meal on top of the soil. The leaves are a deeper shade of green now. I'll mix some rock dust and fish fertilizer in tomorrow, see how that works. I know it won't hurt after so much rain washed the nutrients away.

I don't see any problems in regard to production. You should get a lot of leaves. But it's a warm weather plant. I don't think it would survive winter in NY, unless you put a heat blanket on it. I would put them in big pots, grow them all summer, then cut back to the stump and bring inside for winter. I tried rooting the leaf stems, and got nothing. I was told that I needed to root the woody part of the main stem. So I'll have to try something else.

Eggplant are similar to peppers in germination. They need a good 75-80 degrees, and sometimes as much as 2 weeks. Are you sure the seeds are good? If not, do the paper towel test. If its been over 2 weeks, I'd start some more, but scrap the rockwool this time. Let me know how it goes.

They aren't a whole lot bigger. I've been letting the temps drop into the 50's in the greenhouse and these plants don't seem to like it. I did cut the growth point so they wouldn't go straight up this time. So they'll be making more of a bush type plant. Supposedly they are very tough, so hopefully they'll kick in gear soon.
