Seed scarification is also necessary, and will quicken germination. A seed's hard outer coat makes it impervious to gases and moisture that would cause them to germinate. To overcome this you need to scratch, break or nick the seed coat. In nature this naturally occurs when seeds pass through the digestive tract of some animals, through freezing temperatures or microbial activities that break down the seed coat. Seeds that need to be scarified before sowing are usually large or have thick seed coatings like seeds

I have some daylily seeds that were soaking in water for a couple weeks. I recently took them out of the water to scar them and I put them back in the water to see if I can get them to root. Scarring was easy and I used the metal nail file that comes on the fingernail clippers. I don't know if sitting in water helped them soften up, although the seeds still felt hard. I'm sure using a metal file will easily scar them regardless of them being placed in water first.

It's like she just stopped in the middle of the presentation. Where is Part 2 on what to do with them after they sprout? I mean, she can't leave all of them in that little starter container. When do you put them in the ground and how deep? Why put them in the little container instead of in the ground? The seeds form a bulb? How does it get down to the proper depth? Does a root go down and form the bulb at the proper depth when you barely plant the seeds close to the surface?

I notice female gardeners are often super inaccurate with measurement. It is really fascinating, but I see it all the time in various gardening and DIY videos. My wife even agrees.

You did not mention that the seed needs stratification. Do they not need call treatment first before they were germinate?

BUT --- what is the difference between growing it from seed or buying bulbs... do the seeds take 5 years to get flowers?

complete newbie, is it too late to sow the seeds in November (UK). If it is too late then when is the best time. (spring) I think you said. If its too late for november can store them and sow the follwing spring.

I hate when they show how to, but never show what happened (to the seeds for example). You know finish what you just filmed???

This method will not produce blooms. In my experience- the seeds require cold stratification. I then place my seeds in a damp paper towel in a baggie over a heat mat and wait...several days (2 weeks approx) until you can run your fingernail on the seed and it burst open. You are then ready to add your seeds to potting soil and keep under humidity- light is not necessary until they germinate.

@@alisterhead8488 The truth is I was too lazy and impatient to wait for the seeds to germinate and care after them until they grow into adult bulbs so I went with supermarket bulbs instead. However, seeds seem like a perfect option for those who want a lot of alliums in their flower bed without spending too much money. Are you going to germinate your seeds in a pot or directly in the ground in the first year?
