I thought "dd" made the voiced fricative version of "th". In Layman's terms, it makes the same sound that the th in "The" or "That" does, rather than the sound used in Breath or Throat.

@@danielgiovanniello7217I’m Welsh and yeah that’s right, DD = Th (This, That, The, There), but Connor is northern and they sometimes pronounce words quite differently. E.G. I’m from south and here the sounds LL and CH are very distinct, but I’ve heard northerners pronounce them either as the same sound or as two very similar sounds before. Connor’s not wrong, and I’m not right, it’s just two different dialects of Welsh.

@Ciarz what you are clearly confusing is English for British. A term used predominantly to describe the people of Wales for almost 2000 years. And a term that has described the English for 300. Basically, the “Welsh” are the First Nation British.

I still don’t understand how something so easy is so difficult to understand. The English origins are Germanic, and the Welsh Britons! British. Geographically they are all British and that can never change as their countries are located on the island of Britain.

The irony of that comment is that, for all the hate Wales gets from The English. They make up the largest number of tourists who visit Wales. And while its location, being next to Wales could be a major factor, it’s not the only one. Most of Wales is absolutely beautiful.

@RogerRamjet I am aware that Welsh is not dying anymore. But it is nonetheless exciting to see more Welsh in modern media. My mother tongue is experiencing what Welsh language did back then, so it is giving me hope that revitalizing it is still possible.

One of the other 5 welsh speakers? lmao Maybe if you said it's important to you, but other than that no. There are barely any languages that are less important than welsh. But Welsh does make for a good fantasy language for games and such.

Connor just said it's neat to have his language in modern media, because it's important to HIM. You know like I said in my first comment. It's fine if you say it's important to you. But don't claim some universal importance, like we have for Latin.

No matter how I spin it you are just butt hurt that I called you out for claiming people other than the welsh themselves care about the welsh language. Just stop claiming some higher importance than there actually is, of course the native speakers care, doesn't make me give a shit. Same goes for all the other laguages you mentioned, no one cares except for maybe linguists. I was just using hyperbole on the "barely any languages less important" part since there are in fact a bunch of languages equally unimportant.

The Welsh language is like the antithesis to the French language. One is 90% consonants, and the other is 90% vowels.

How many vowels in French? Cause all I know is Welsh has two more than English. Having few or no vowels is nothing but a myth.

@@truthbeforeopinions941 I think the myth comes up because in English W isn't a vowel, so when an English speaker looks at something like "crwth" they don't see a vowel in the word, even though it's there. And in English Y is a consonant more often than a vowel, so again in something like "mynydd" they might not see it, though I feel like with Y it's easier for them to grasp that it's a vowel at first glance. And then you've got stuff like "ddedwyddwch" which an English speaker is going to have a hard time with. So Welsh words being mostly consonants is an understandable mistake if they haven't learned any Welsh, I feel.

Welsh is the reason I discovered Connor. I was learning Welsh and was hoping to find fun content to watch that's in Welsh. Turns out there's not much out there. It's mostly all boring or only focused on teaching you the language, so nothing fun to watch for some passive Welsh exposure. So I'm completely with you on this, would love to see more!

@@itismeanttobe I think, like the other person in this thread said, that maybe hearing the language with fun things could help. When learning doesn't feel like learning, it's less of a chore. You pick up languages by exposure, so finding books online in Welsh (maybe even audiobooks) could help. Awesome that you speak three languages, even if you're self-conscious about one of them. I can only speak English and the tinest handfuls of Spanish and weeb related words in Japanese...so you're doing great by my book 😂

Other way around. Virtually all of Lord of the rings is based on the ancient Mabinogi. British (Welsh) Triads. Tolkien was very infatuated with all things Wales, From its language to its history.

@DragonKnight90001 indeed, even Geralt of Rivia is based on Arthur. Having two swords as he did, which is something most people are unaware of. He had Excalibur from the stone and he also had one given to him by the lady of the lake. Which is a quest in the DLC for the game. They also created the card game Gwent, which is supposedly the Welsh kingdom in which he lived and Ruled.

No, anyone with a decent level of understanding languages knows is far more correct and consistent in Its pronunciations than English. And it predates English, or English we’d recognise by a considerable amount of time.
