I have a theory, I do believe that Lucy is the child of Herb and Scarlet. And I think I might know who killed them both. Dr.Nefario. What if Dr.Nefario was killing a bunch of villains or former villians through the late 60's and 70's. He killed all of these villians to stop them from going to the moon before him. Or the minions could have been killing villians. In despicable me 3, the minions go to jail and pretty much own the damn jail the next day. It makes sense that the minions would have some criminal history if they could do that. Just a theory I thought of.

Lucy’s hair is red and ginger hair is known for skipping generations. If one of Scarlet’s or Herb’s parents had red hair it is very possible that they could a red haired daughter. Also Scarlet and Herb could have been killed by a villain who felt betrayed by their supposed joining of the AVL and decided to kill them for revenge. It would support the rumor that Lucy’s parents were killed by a villain. It could also explain why she joined the AVL. If her parents were well known agents and were killed when she was young she might have joined the agency in order to feel closer to them.

Hi Theorizer, I don't usually do this but this theory is SO GOOD I had to join in. Dru said, " Their father was so proud of him." So he obviously knew of all of Gru's evil deeds. What if after discovering Dru was a let down Robert hired Dr. Nefario to raise Gru for him and inspire him to do all the evil deeds he wanted to do so if/when he died Robert had someone to continue his legacy.

Really enjoyed your theory on how Dr. Nefario and Gru met. Both were very ambitious and dedicated to villainy. AVL seems incompetent to me in a 'Mr. Bean' sort of way. Not intentional but clearly so.

To also add to your "Lucy is Scarlet's daughter theory: If you notice in the Minions movie there is a scene where Kevin, Stuart, and Bob go see Scarlet's show at villian con. The minion's reactions were almost as if they had a crush on scarlet, especially Kevin (he even has a fantasy dream squence about her). Fast forward to Despicable Me 2, uncoincidentally upon meeting Lucy there is a running joke in the movie WHERE THE MINIONS HAVE A CRUSH ON HER, and one of them even has a dream sequence like Kevin did with Scarlet. Perhaps it's a coincidence but I'd thought that was something to point out.

I actually think Herb is Vector's dad or is at least a blood relative. When I saw Herb he reminded me of Vector from the first film with similar mannerisms and the similar features such as the brown hair and pointy nose. Outcome A: We do already see Vector's dad Mr. Perkins but I have a feeling that he's actually a 60-70 year old Herb Overkill who gained a lot of weight and had a drinking habit that caused his nose to go from pointy to bulbous. Plus Overkill would probably be a pseudonym. Outcome B: Even if Mr. Perkins and Herb aren't the same person they'd probably would still be related in blood. It could very well make sense since Herb could have access to vast sums of money which he and Scarlet would use for world domination. And well Mr. Perkins would probably let him use the bank whenever in the hopes of that money circulating back or family perks.

Ok, definitely not Benjamin Bratt (as much as I like him), not Nefario as he was interested in stealing the moon and knew the AVL wouldn't get in the way. The two possibilities I see are Gru's dad, as he lived at least to see Gru steal the moon (confirmed in Despicable Me 3) and so wanted revenge on Scarlett for putting him out of commission for the Villian Con and depriving him of the only chance he had to see his son, and also for trying to steal his title as Greatest Villian Ever and El Macho. But the more likely option I think would be El Macho. Think about it. El Macho seems to be about Gru's age, possibly older, and Lucy's parents died when she was old enough to be on her own, so around 17-18. That would put El Macho around his early thirties at that point. Now, we don't know exactly when El Macho faked his death (maybe there's a date somewhere I missed), but definitely early enough for Gru to know about and describe as "one of the greats". But he said "Like all greats, El Macho was gone too soon." Great actors and celebrities who have been considered "gone too soon" are within 20-35 years old. So the time frame matches up. And we know El Macho didn't care about the government, stealing a mail truck (a federal service) and running away with it without any fear of the police. Maybe his antics got to such a point that the AVL had no choice but to step in to keep their cover intact, and tried to stop him. He had no choice but to fake his death or go to prison for life. And possibly the death sentence. He chose the former, but as revenge, killed their founding agents, leaving Lucy alone. One more possibility I thought while I was typing this comment is Victor's dad, the president of the Bank of Villiany. It doesn't seem like a good possibility, I personally still think it's El Macho, but hear me out. Maybe Herb secretly borrowed large sums from the Bank in order to build his machines, and it caught up to him. So in order to retrieve his money, he ordered him and his wife killed. I don't know, doesn't seem good, but I would be epic if he ordered Gru killed in the next movie because Gru also borrowed too much. Bring the story full circle. Anyway, anyone who sat through my ramblings, thank you. Goodbye!

It seems more likely from his personality, that Dr.Nefario just teamed up with Gru, instead of using him with an enormously complex evil plot. And the AVL is probably just corrupt, not actually a evil world dominating organization, explaining how in the 3rd movie, we had a new very much imcopotant director. Occam's razor.

Didn't Gru's brother tell Gru that his father was proud of his evil or something? This implies that Gru's father was alive when Gru did his villainy. Assuming that this was after his team up with Dr. Nefario, this very well implies that Gru's father could have been the villain who killed Lucy's parents, cause you know, just to affirm his role as the worlds greatest villain. And since Gru's father would be about 80-ish, he simply died of old age. Also, have you noticed that the design of Gru's dad's car is similar to that of Gru's (in terms of nailing and stuff). Really interesting movie this one ay.

My question about Despicable Me is, Why does the moon look so big on Earth and why does it only take a minute for Gru to get there instead of 8 days there and back? Maybe other villains have tried to steal the moon but it keeps getting returned to the sky and that moves it closer. When Gru shrank the Moon, what are the chances of it going back into orbit instead of crushing the Earth.

okay, here i go.I already know this will be LONG, so be prepared... first of all, think about it, why would dr.Nefario want to work for a kid? maybe because he already knew that Gru's father was still alive and knew that he was the son of the world's greatest criminal? Well, maybe he wasn't when Scarlet Overkill was alive, but maybe Gru's father killed them? giving him the title of being the world's super villain. Plus, what if his mother really was there for their father? Because why would she want her son to be influenced by the job her ex-husband is already occupying in? Perhaps she was searching for some sort of help to get rid of him, since according to her actions in the movies, she barely carries any remorse, or just hides it very well. So she could be the perfect candidate to finding a villain/assassin to do the job for her, maybe even perhaps El Macho? Dru made it sound as if their father has died just recently, or maybe even Bratt. I could assume that those villains are the main ones that would want to claim his title as world's best villain, and Dru, wanting to continue the family legacy, wants to steal that title back, not by murder, but becoming an even better villain by stealing and other heinous crimes besides murder due to his innocent mindset at this point, but as time continues, spending his time with the minions may increase his hidden abilities as a future super villain.
