I feel like there definitely is something weird going on in cloudy with a chance of meatballs, but I think it’s actually a bit more depressing. I think that there is actually an international food shortage, this would explain why the town had such a focus on their sardine production, and why the mayor is obsessed with getting big. In Ancient Rome, being large was a symbol of status because it meant you had access to an excess of food, and I think it’s the same with the mayor. Then why did sardines become unpopular? Well because of Chester. He created food bars that were quick to produce and tasted good meaning that they overshadowed the fishing industry in smaller towns. Later, Chester says he was sent by the UN, but what if he was sent specifically to extract food to supplement the international shortages? In other words, I think that Chester is profiting off of international food shortages
