I would like 42 in front and 10-51 behind with 44 mm graveltyres. 40 + 11-42 is what I have and it is covering everything important, but I could be happy with one more gear in both ends. 40- 42 is average 7,5 km/t when going as easy as I can in long (30 minute)8% climbs.

Seems like gravel gear is plateauing, reaching that level of slow improvements that other bikes have seen, at least since the dominance of disc brakes. Nice new gear for my next new bike, but my 4 year old bike with a few updates (lower gearing, 25mm internal width rims)...I'm set. Fun to look at the new toys, but nothing I have to rush out and buy.

INSANE that their cranks start at 170mm considering the recent trend and studies showing the benefits of shorter crank arms in general, but it leaves people like my 5' 2" wife looking elsewhere for cranks. Other hollowtech II cranks have avaible shorter lengths, so it's not the technology. It's literally like they are trying to kill the 24m spindle or care only about OEM , knowing bike shops will swap on their small frames at the point of purchase.

I'd like to try this on a pure gravel bike. Not on a gravel/touring bike loaded with gear, but on a gravel ride just made for its rider and a bottle of water. I think that would be a rather nippy ride. And no, I am not a 1x groupset person but I do think that with 12 gears you are incing darn close to not needing that front chain ring in most cases.

I switched my Genesis Croix De Fer over to GRX during lock down and have a real mix and match across the different sets Shimano had on offer then. It would be interesting to understand what i would be able to switch out / change to now etc - I have a 2x 600 series chain ring, 46/30, a 105 road cassette 11-34, the 800 series rear derailleur with clutch, 800 series shifters and front disc caliper with XT rotors. My rear caliper is a 105 one to work with the frame mounting.... so a real mix, but it works really well

So with GRX going to 12 speed has the pull ratio changed so you could use either the GRX shifters or the Shimano MTB shifters with the new GRX Rear Derailleur ?
@Piplodocus
@Piplodocus Жыл бұрын
This is a great move from Shimano. Kinda what I was saying about their 1x GRX options from the start: they should try match SRAMs wider range or use more MTB bits (which is why I run my 1x11 GRX with a SRAM 10-42t instead of the original Shimano 11-42t for more range). So, if you currently have 1x11 GRX on your bike, can you just change your RH lever and other 12-speed specific bits (and microspline), or will your levers then not match and you'll have to buy a new LH lever too else it'll look/feel weird? I already have a LH lever for the dropper/brakes. And I presume the old GRX in-line hydraulic sub-brake levers are still compatible? If you can do just a partial groupset upgrade at some point that makes the upgrade price more appealing. 🤓

@Piplodocus
@Piplodocus 11 ай бұрын
@@matthewshultz8762 Yeah I presume the fact they describe the new levers as being designed for flared bars, but no previous mention on the 11 speed means I'd have to cough up an extra £250 (or whatever it is) for a new left hand dropper lever I don't really need, just to match a new right.

For that specific setup, you would need wheels/hub with Microspline freehub support. Your existing road wheels most likely came with a HG freehub. But other than that, you shouldn't have any issues with converting a road bike to a 10-45 1x setup.

I have 11speed GRX 1x on my road bike (with a 11-46 garbaruk cassette and a garbaruk derailleur cage to make the it work with 11-46 (actually even 11-52 would be possible) work), the only problem is that the chainline is a bit wider and the Q-factor is also wider, I switched to a rotor road crankset and now the chainline and Q-factor are back to road standards. It's a nice setup, but if I would build a road bike again now, I'd probably go 2x Di2, sometimes I would like to have a bit smaller gaps between the gears, and the Di2 Shifters just looks so much nicer.

Electronic is not a thing off-road? 😂😂😂😂 SRAM AXS anyone?

When I was buying my latest mountain bike (2nd hand), I originally wanted Sram AXS electronic shifting. In the end I found a good value bike equipped with Shimano XTR M9100 and honestly, the groupset is so well made and refined it really doesn't need to be electric. For riding on road, the shifter might feel a little too stiff as you are shifting a lot because of the jumps between the gears, but I can't notice any flaw off-road. I guess with the STI levers this only 'complaint' would be also eliminated. The Hyperglide+ is just that good if you have a high end lever (on the MTB side XT at least, SLX is way too clumsy and the feel is nowhere near as good).

Depends on what you want to keep and how big you want to go in the back. Other manufactures do HG compatible 12 speed 11-50,51,and 52 that means you could keep your wheels/hubs but loose the 10 tooth*, Left hand lever and (likely) both brake calipers will be fine if you can find just an OEM lever for sale. Chainset should be fine and the cranks look like the same BCD so at worst it would just be a new chainring. IF (and its a big fat IF) Shimano have used the same pull ratio you might be able to use your existing rear mech with a Wolftooth link or an aftermarket cage, might seem unlikely but they do have previous for this, Tiagra 4700 and GRX 400 rear mechs work fine with 11 speed 105 and above shifters (although you wont find it on any official compatibility charts). *If you really want the 10t (or even a 9!) don't forget Srams XD and XDR has been sub 11t for a while and you might be more likely to find an XD/XDR driver for your wheelset, defiantly worth looking into and weighing up the pros/cons before you go buying wheels or having new hubs laced.

I think 12 speed with that 10 cog behind can increase descending 3% speed from 30 mph to 33 mph, allowing more power pedalling. Less descent it will not help me , because 11-40 is hard enough, more descent it will not help, because then I dont pedal anymore anyway. But I am tempted. It will convert the gravelbike to a combi- gravel-roadbike, putting the roadbike further away in my shed. The roadbike has several flaws. It cant go with fatter tyres than 26 mm, and the big cog on the cassette is only 25 teeth. And it doesnt have any suspension, and no dropperpost. Actually it is worse than gravelbike in sections of almost every journey, when the going gets rough.But it is a true pleasure going between 5% downhill and 5% uphill on good tarmac.

I'm glad Shimano started churning out mechanical group sets again as for a while it seems that they abandoned it for their premium lines. I have the Chinese to thank for this as Sensah and L-TWOO have really uped their game.

Since I've had SRAM AXS (which is compatible with XPLR) since 2020, why should I want this? BTW, my brakes work just fine, despite it being sprayed with some sort of lube and only needing new pads and a good cleaning. Oh, the rotor is heavier grade and has a lot more wear than Shimano. BTW, this is on a gravel bike...

I used to love Shimano, but they have lost their way. If Shimano had made a shifter compatible with the MTB groups, we could have had this years ago. They are so busy trying to segment their market that they are pushing customers away.

I have a nice XC mtb bought used with slightly wrong stem and hilarious wide bar. Wonder if it would be nice to swop to dropbar and Grx brake/gearhandles? If it works it will be a fantastic gravelbike. I run it with 2.2 inch tyres now which maybe is the best graveltyres possible. Fast on smooth trails, fast on gravel, and fast on tarmac.

Cuthbert's explanation is as clear as mud... Not because he he didn't explain it well enough, it's just the options within the different 'levels' (sorry) 'Personalities' (whatever overpaid personality came up with that at Shimano needs a personality termination) are so complicated as is the pricing.

ok nice but nothing revolutionary, and I feel it would have made more sense to just go with micro spline for all 12 speed (also for road, so shimano should have ditched HG already back when they introduced 12 speed ultegra and dura ace). Why keep the HG body? What does it offer compared to the micro spline? (yes backwards compatibility for old wheelsets, but now if you want to go from 1x GRX to 2x, you need new wheels or at least a new freehub body if available) With micro spline you could still keep 11-xx cassettes but also offer (narrow) 10-xx cassettes and thus make life a bit easier for those who want a shimano road 1x setup (even though shimano doesn't offer a 1x chrankset, it's still something people want)

Haha, they literally just re-branded the XT cassette and derailleur haha. which means if you REALLY want to weight weenie you can slap on the pricey and notoriously short lived XTR cassette. I do wonder if the derailleur is interchangable with the MTB mechs. Could save some money with a SLX cassette and derailleur out back, not that XT derailleurs are particularly expensive.

No obvious way to unofficially use an 11-40 cassette which was really popular with 11 speed configuration could be a problem for Shimano here. Shimano cues 2x seems to support 46-30 (and 36-22) doubles with 11-45 cassettes so it would be interesting to see if the existing mtb 12 speed 10-45 cassette would also work on GRX 12 speed 2x (and microspline hub).

@@simonstucki I Agree with you, but I tried to add some realistic experience to an answer that I think is mathematical correct, but only is valid for they who are by my standards very strong. It doesnt help to have heavy cogs if you arent strong enough to turn them around. I have this in mind when playing with the idea of changing cogs, and realize that more heavy cogs only helps me when descending light, biking in someones drag, or going with the wind.

For a gravel bike mostly used on the road, I reckon the 10-51T with a 46T chainring looks interesting. By my reckoning, it has the same lowest gear as the current GRX800 2x (48/31T with 11-34T cassette), but a much higher top gear - the same as a road compact setup. I don’t reckon the gaps are much bigger than the 11speed 2x either. You’d obviously have “Ultegra” on your pedals though, rather than GRX…

This is really gonna need to come down in price to be competetive. If you get levers, crank, cassette, and rear mech for a 1by setup rival xplr is about 50g lighter and over 300€ cheaper. With the extra money could get a red crank instead of the rival, be 300g lighter, and still spend less.

1200$ for a 1x12. Are they kidding? You can get some decent 1x12 from L-TWOO for around 340$. Yes without cassette, crank and chain. But these parts never add up to almost 900$ even if you would think about taking the supidly high priced parts from SRAM. The 105 mechanical is "reasonably" priced. This is just nuts.
