Its a big deal to finally have the legendary Toyota GT-One back in Gran Turismo, and even moreso because now for the first time in the whole series - it has a detailed interior and the ability to change its livery. Curiously though, two major changes in terms of how its represented do present questions on how good it will feel in GT7; One, that it is technically no longer a top tier racer. It is instead a Gr2 car. Secondly, instead of the 600 or so horsepower which you may expect, it comes in more of a 'qualifying trim' of sorts, with over 760 bhp 'stock'. Both of these beg the question - how does the iconic TS020 feel now that it has finally returned?...
''In the early 1990s, Toyota set out to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans with its Group C TS010 race car. A number of unsuccessful years followed, but the company would return for the 1998 season with the Toyota GT-One (TS020). During its Group C racing days, Toyota developed its race cars almost exclusively in Japan. However, it revamped its plans and entrusted this project to the group in charge of their World Rally Championship activities, German-based TTE (Toyota Team Europe), in an attempt to once again claim overall victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The new Le Mans car, the GT-One, was designed by André de Cortanze, a race-car design genius with a brilliant track record in top motorsports genres, including Formula 1, the WRC, and the WRC. De Cortanze designed the Peugeot 905B, the first Group C Peugeot car to claim victory at Le Mans in 1992 and 1993.
For the GT-One, Cortanze the latest in F1 technology into its design. Its carbon composite monocoque body was developed for aerodynamic performance. Providing the power was the same twin-turbocharged 3.6 liter V-8 developed during the Toyota's Group C days. The suspension had very long arms in the front and rear, allowing for ideal suspension geometry.
In its first out at Le Mans in 1998, Toyota entered three GT-Ones in the LM GT1 in a serious attempt for overall victory. While one of its cars led the race, a combination of mechanical trouble and bad luck kept it from taking the checkered flag.
The following year, a change in the race's technical regulations saw the GT-One entered in the LM GTP prototype class. Three GT-Ones were entered in the race, but two of them, including the favorite and its supporting cars, were forced to withdraw due to a host of problems.
However, the third car, driven by Ukyo Katayama, Toshio Suzuki, and Keiichi Tsuchiya managed to stay in the race and claim 2nd place overall. This was the highest finish ever for a Japanese car driven by an all-Japanese team at Le Mans.''

Am I the only one when testing this car to find it very heavy through corners? I tested it against the CLK LM and BMW F1 at Trial Mountain and, sure it's faster, but I actually found the Mercedes to be sharper through corners. This could be me not getting used to Prototypes as normal but if that's the case, I'm actually not complaining. I find the shape of the GT One more like a dragster than the usual crowd with it's almost flat body and high wing, and considering it's past as a top speed monster in classic Gran Turismo (Especially GT3 with the Wheelie Trick), that makes sense. Also it has a 2 more PP than the 787B What-

I think it's because the clk doesn't have this much hp so without realising you're pulling too much speed in the corners.

I actually felt a bit of understeer for my taste and i worked a lot on suspension and differential to find my setup. Imo it is a bit nervous compared to CLK (sharper in the corners but a little bit stiff compared to F1) and F1 (imo the easiest of the three to throw into corners) but in general is faster, especially on straight. And i get the point you made, really the GT-One is in the middle of GT race cars and full prototypes so the drive is not that intuitive with a mix of mechanical grip and not that much of aero grip compared to LMP1. If you see GT500 cars rely much more on aero and in corners may be faster than GT-One (I compare it with the GT-R GT500 2016). This is also the problem of putting it in Gr.2 and thinking about the GT-One, the first R8, The BMW V12 LMR this has always been my fear. Really these cars are in the middle (faster than the rest of Gr.2 but in reality they are not anywhere near to a Porsche 919, especially in corners) and there should be a category like Gr.1.5

I'm not training to become a professional video gamer, or cart driver. Not picking at you, but realism, and fun should find an enjoyable balance in a game!

I love the GT-One. It looks great, sounds great, and feels great to drive, but I just can't understand Gr.2. I've tried, since I've heard a few people online now saying how it feels at home in Gr.2, but I just don't see it. It has better stats than every other Gr.2 car, with the modern cars being 10 performance points or more below it, and the older cars from the 90s are 30 points below it. It has 100bhp or more than every other Gr.2 car, it is faster than every other Gr.2 car, it has higher PP than some Gr.1 cars stock and I can easily keep pace with Gr.1 cars while driving it. I always use the NSX GT500 as an example; go to GT6 and try to beat a GT-One with an NSX GT500, you won't be able to, because the 2 cars aren't in the same league. The GT-ONE had over 670pp, and the NSX GT500 had under 600pp, and now Polyphony is saying these 2 cars are in the same league? You can argue BoP all day long, but if the car has to be nerfed to Oblivion to be at the same level as others in it's class ( which I personally believe it will have to be), then it's in the wrong class. I could nerf Gr.1 cars to be competitive in Gr.2 no problem. On another note, I'm glad to hear and not surprised at all to hear that you'll be doing a GT-ONE Road Car build. I've also done one, actually just uploaded it today, and I think it's pretty good, I made a livery for it as well, which if you wanted one to use for the video, I wouldn't mind lol. But I always like comparing our different builds on the rare occurrence that we both make the same ones.

Why does this car almost look too good? Maybe it’s just nostalgia kicking in, but I’m used to this car being a blocky Standard model. I think you said something similar with the Ford GT40, I think this looks better Standard. No complaints though, it looks and drives amazingly well!

Done some testing on this car... and it's way too fast for Gr.2. The new race kinda shows it, as it starts from the back and ends up really far ahead of the rest of the GR2 by end of the race.

This was the car which in Gran turismo 3 you can do a glitch which can do a wheelie and on a track like "Test course", which can run as fast as 10000000000000 billion MPH/ KM. For those who remember the glitch in Gran turismo 3 🔥🔥 😂 . Best car in the series! 👏🏻

This is my favourite Le Mans car. It just captures a time when Toyota made over engineered products like the Supra (stock + JGTC). It has been my go to car for the very fastest cars and has crisp sharp handling and high speed stability. Very reliable and honestly the coolest looking even for a late 90s race car meant for the extremes.

If you equip Nos and turbos. This thing is well and truly capable of Gr1 top speeds like Group C. It’s too good for Gr2. But probably a tad slower for Gr1. But it can definitely compete with some upgrades mentioned above. The issue probably is the pronounced understeer it possesses compared to most Gr1’s. It’s not horrendous at Lemas but it can be noticeable. In the Fuji time trial it’s definitely more noticeable. Overall it’s a great car and I’m so glad it’s in the game. Been a long time coming. Now Speed 8 official please lol. With a livery if you didn’t know any better it’s almost the same.

For me, this car reminds me of a movie from the past. Your memory of it grows more fond as time goes on. Then, when you see it again, it’s just meh. I was excited for this car. Then I saw the limited number of races it can participate in (group 2) and was disappointed but I was still stoked to use it. Then, I drove it in two races and realized it was kinda tedious and not nearly as enjoyable as it was in past games. Overpowered for Gr.2 with understeer and a squirrelly tail. A bit of a letdown to be honest.

The issue with adding something like this into Gr.2 is it starts a big what if question. Say they add stuff like the BMW V12 LMR, Mercedes CLR and Nissan R391 into the game, do they put those cars into Gr.2 or Gr.1? The GT-one raced against all of them in its 1999 trim

Yeah because they added a LMGTP Prototype into a GT1/GT500 class as GTP because took GT1 "road-going cars" and told the designers you don't need to follow anymore road going rules and they can have more aero and power.

I'd hate that if they really put TS020 into Gr.1, and tbh none of the GT1/2 era classics are LMP or Gr.C level racecars, although TS020 have the shape of an closed cockpit prototype, it's aero isn't the same as those, and people now can feel the understeer and sudden snap in game, no longer an all round legend with both speed and control.

I think the reason its also on gr2 is because GT7 plans to add more modern gt500 cars that are obviously a faster pace and so in the future there will be more competition. I think also GR1s get quicker with more modern machines so in the future i think GR2 will be more balanced. It might be soon too since it seems every 8 years Polyphony update their super gt class cars in the games. 2008, 2016, so 2024 might be a change

@@MasahiroKurosaki-yx2dw the lackluster updates seem to be hinting towards a big one sometimes this year. They might add some. They have the Nissan Z '23 and the Civic from 22' and both are racing in GT500. Also the Toyota which I'm surprsied isn't already in the game

Well, I have tried all of the GT2 cars fully tuned and on a time trial around the Nurburgring 24 hour layout ( ultimate time trial track) the honda NSX concept is well faster. As it should be with modern technology. The GT One is of course a very welcome returning icon but technology waits for no one.

@@ciscodeer9094 I just wondered why they gave us the "qualifying" trim anyway. In GT4 most of the GT1s and prototypes had this (except for the F1 GTR for some reason). I don't know why they're doing it again here.

In GT4 most of the GT1s and prototypes (Except for the F1 GTR for some reason) have inflated power outputs, presumably representing how powerful the engines would be without restrictor plates. I don't know about the PS3 era titles but GT Sport and 7 don't do this, except for the GT-One for some reason.

Problem for me is it's slower than grp1 cars for Sardegna and the new 900 event at La Sarthe is like 10 more minutes for way less money. Every major fan favourite track should have events giving right about the same level of credits at the 700, 800 and 900pp, and why can't we just choose the amount of laps or time for the event? Why can't I double the amount of laps at Sardegna and get double the credits? Also events where you win by being first of your class as in real life, you should't be finishing races 1st overall against cars of a higher class. I'll only enjoy the car if there is a grp2 daily race.

alternatively you could do the spa 1 hour race, sure it's technically like 150k per hour less than Sardegna but I'd argue it's a much more enjoyable race bcuz of the rain and not having to degrade the car as much as the Le Mans event

It'll only do 236mph now without nos. It used to do 280mph. In GT5 346mph.

Interesting. I have only played one race with it but I have to disagree: It's relatively slow, it understeers and it's very ugly. 🤢 Mercedes Sauber C9 and Mazda 787B are way faster and better in my opinion.

The car is great but the engine sound from outside the car does not sound like the GT-One. From the cockpit it sounds just like the real car but from the outside it has too deep of a rumble. It has a 3.6L after all, it shouldn't be that deep of an engine note. It should sound more like a GT500 V8 from the outside rather than what it has now.

GT7 is ridiculously realistic when it comes to cockpit sounds. I noticed this first with the Carrera GT. From the outside, while it does sound like a V10, it doesn't have the HOWL of the CGT V10, but on the cockpit? It sounds exactly like the real thing. PD focused more on cockpit sound likely because of VR.

Road version had quad exhaust. At least in gt2. Can't remember if any other gt had road version.
