GUARANTEED Good Night's Sleep
Getting a good night's sleep is incredibly important, but it's by no means guaranteed, especially when camping.
So in this video I share a simple but incredibly effective tip to help guarantee a better night's sleep by hacking some of your standard camping equipment so that it plays nicely with your other kit. 😴

Yes I’m going to do this.The mat sliding on the tent floor and pillow sliding off the mat has driven me to the point of serious psychological breakdown on a few occasions! I’ve tried that rubber floor rug gripper stuff with very limited success so will now try your method,maybe combined with spots over the tent floor for extra grip. I’ve solved the pillow sliding on the mat problem by stretching a womans tights (don’t ask) over the end of the mat and sliding the pillow underneath which obviously holds the pillow in position.

I put some silicone strips on my scarp 1 floor. Pad doesn’t move. Also sea to summit make a cool max fitted sheet. Not only does it make the pad stay clean stops the sleeping bag moving around. Informative video mate 🤙

Some time ago a bought some skateboard friction tape with the aim of putting strips on both sides of my sleeping mat. I use an inflatable roll mat having only quite recently binned the original lightweight civvy roll mat I used in the Army. It won’t work on these new lilos that all you young pups now use, but I don’t like the idea of a blow-out mid kip. Mind you, I remember when it was all fields round here and rat packs still had tins… :)

Hmmm. I wonder if that stuff can serve a dual purpose? Since it's designed to be a seam sealer why not paint it on the 'quilting' stitching of the bag? It'd make it just a bit more water resistant. The pattern would make a lattice of grippiness. Obviously you'd still need a layer under the mat too.
@TheBushcraftPadawan
@TheBushcraftPadawan 2 жыл бұрын
It's certainly an option, but I wonder how well it would hold up to being washed and whether it would reduce the breathability of the bag somewhat?

@@TheBushcraftPadawan G’day, Bushcraft. Sorry bout that. Baseball pitchers have a small, cotton bag (say, 1”X2”) with powdered rosin. They pick it up and squeeze it now and then to provide a better grip on the ball. Maybe cricket pitchers do too? In lieu of that, music stores sell rosin for bows of stringed instruments . From the “For What It’s Worth Department” By the by, I like your information, and the way you think. A tip o’ my hat to you. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying

I had not thought of this but do suffer the sam issue. However I solved mine by buying a strip of material from Halfords that you out on your dash to stop things slipping around. I lay this under my sleeping pad and this has also solved my issue with my sleeping bag sliding off of my pad. I have only tried this out on static camps so far but will be trying it out on thru hikes next year. This may be the solution that I have sought for ages.

Sounds like a great tip! My only concern would be putting a substance on my rather expensive "Klymit Recon" pad without knowing the long-term effect it might have on the material. A quick read of the back of the tube (I last used "Tenacious Tape" brand sealant on the seams of my tarp and have some leftover) would inform the user what types of material it might not get along with. I'll probably first try a bit on a small portion of my pad to see how it does since it seems like a great idea and would solve a huge issue that's been plaguing me as well! Thanks agian!

Thanks for the feedback David, II'm glad you found it useful. The Thermarest is still going strong with no obvious degradation due to the sealant, of course, I'm not sure what the long term impact would be.

Seems like a great idea. I am wondering how it works over time, does it attract grit, dirt etc, does it degrade. I tend to mainly hammock camp these days.
@TheBushcraftPadawan
@TheBushcraftPadawan 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Shane, good questions! I've not seen it attract a great deal of dirt or dust as yet, however most of my camping over the past 12-months has been above the treeline and in a tent, so far less likelihood of it coming in contact with the sorts of things you might find in a typical woodland. I've no doubt it will degrade somewhat over time and I may need to reapply the sealant but it's lasting well so far.
@frogmaster83
@frogmaster83 2 жыл бұрын
Not a issue I have found with a tent. The raised sides on the UL80 keeps you on it (if it stays up) If I am using a big sleeping bag and a slim mat, it goes inside the bag. Problem solved. 😁
@TheBushcraftPadawan
@TheBushcraftPadawan 2 жыл бұрын
I've toyed with placing the mat inside the bag but if found it too snug-a-fit as I like to have a bag that's 'just' big enough so that I have to expend less calories to heat it up. As and when my Thermarest gives up the ghost I'll definitely be looking for something that has a slight rise/lip along the side as you have described.
@frogmaster83

@@TheBushcraftPadawan yes the mat in bag only works with my summer bags, not the slimmer fitting winter ones. The pad warms up nicely though.
