I think people ask it because the cynic in me says a lot of people treat their pets like products for their own enjoyment than as a living being. A guy I know had lost one of his piggies last year. It died from old age at 11 years!

Do you have other piggies? I know it is hard after you lose one to think about getting another one, but I lost one and couldn't stand it so I rescued another one. I am so sorry for your loss! They become like family! 😢

Ok this morning I went to the dentist. I had my pink ..I love my Guinea Pig t shirt from YOU. Anyway I had a lady in the waiting room looks at my shirt and asked me if I had Guinea pigs. I said yes I have 8. Everyone in the waiting room then looks at me. Next question was were they my kids? I said no they are all mine! I know they wanted to ask why but I got called back before any more questions could be asked. Then when Ingot in the dentist chair my Scotty’s animals T-shirt I had on they want to know more about YOU. Just had to share because of what you said about people looking at you think why would a grown man want Guinea Pigs that is the look I got in the waiting room like why would a grown woman want a Guinea Pigs lol

I’m 82 live on my own with 2 adorable boy guinea pigs Gus&Fin, I have them in my bedroom and love waking up to them every morning,they are great companions. (By the way scotty I love watching all your videos.)

It's like people. Illnesses can occur in babies and children. Some people live till old age without hardly any sickness. We can only educate ourselves to live healthy and look after people and animals the best way we can. Thanks, Scotty and Bengal 🙏❤️🙏

My first piggie lived to be 9.5. She had fantastic genetics, never got sick until the day she died. I know much more about piggies now and have vastly improved the living conditions of my piggies over the years. But still none have approached that 9.5 year benchmark. Genetics matter. Quality of life, though, can always improve even if the lifespan doesn't change from it. It matters to those piggies! ^_^

I agree it depends a lot on the caregiver of the guinea pig ❤ if you are diligent with care, food and make sure they get vet visits! My oldest is 5 and a half and he has lumbar arthritis,but he zooms daily!. I try to stay on top of all four of my piggies health 💯 Bless you and your guinea pigs!

Great video! I lost Mya in February at 5 and just lost my Mia last week at 7 1/2. For me it all about quality of life and lots of love. Mia was Mighty Mia until the end. She had a calcified bulla and slowly went blind after 6. I made sure her cage adapted with her and her sisters. She was my first piggy and now she is with her sister Hanna. I still have 7 more wonderful piggies including Mia's herd of Oreo and Ginger. Both ladies are over the 7 1/2 mark. All that matters is they are all loved deeply.

My vet says my girls are seniors. They will be 4 next month. Due to one girl having 4 lumps I just keep praying she’s eating, drinking and doing well, but I don’t believe she’s going to be here by 5. 😭 My husband and I couldn’t have children and our animals are our children enjoy your fur babies Scottie. They bring joy into our lives and we do for them. Have a Blessed day!❤️

They said atv4 they're seniors?wow...our oldest pig was 8 years old. Most of ours lived to 5 or 6 but 1 made it to 7. Ppl looked at us like we were ridiculous for crying when they died. Like guinea pigs are somehow less important than any other pet. I hope your furbabies are doing well. You unfortunately will just know when it's time to pass on.

@@kirstenpost477 yes our vet did say seniors at their age. They won’t be 4 until next month. Thank you! Any further baby is hard to lose they are family. Anyone who thinks it’s not worth crying over obviously has no soul. We had a birds nest outside on our porch and yesterday the neighbors cat killed three of the 4 babies and my husband and I have been crying about that. We were able to get the one survivor to a rehabber and he has been doing great so far.

Greetings from Germany! One of my guinea pigs was over 10 years old. I've been a guinea pig mom for over 15 years now 🥰. You really can't commit to a number of how long a guinea pig will live. On average, my piggies live about 6-8 years. According to my veterinarian, it's because of the good nutrition I offer my animals. With lots of good hay and fresh grass😉👌. But it can also simply be genetic 🤷‍♀️. Although I have been keeping these wonderful animals for so long, I am always learning something new about them. 🙋‍♀️💞🐹

I'm a 40 year old married woman with no kids and 2 rabbits. We're happy! There are so many variants on an animal's lifespan, from genetics to the care we give. But, you are right. Sadly, people can be so ignorant, or just completely closed minded. I was asked by someone at work if I bred my rabbit, as his daughter wanted one..... I said that there are thousands in shelters in need of a good home. The look I got was one of 'ugh'.

When I got Harriet , that was the first question I get asked, sometimes it's in a negative way and others positive as they wish iy was longer as they got to know Harriet. I learned how to best care for her so she can live each day and live a long life. Now that I have Clementime, I am also doing the same for her. When you get a pet, you shouldn't think how long, but think of the pet and care and well being of your beloved pet. I never thought of that when I got both of mine, but was sad, when I realized they may have shorter life spans than other pets. It just made me make sure to have them live the best life possible.

Hi Scotty 👋. Someone at work once said to me, when they knew I had Piggies, thought it strange, they said they're more of a kids pet!!! My answer was "I never knew you had to be a certain age to love animals" !! 😂. I'm 62 and have 3 guinea pigs. No disrespect to kiddies, but a lot do get them, and then the novelty wears off 😢. Hats off to the parents who are responsible and teach their kids that to look after their animals properly. Us 'Golden Oldies' !(🤣) can run rings round a lot of some 'young 'uns' !! (🇬🇧) Bengal is such a handsome chap! Love his pink nose and lips 😍.

My two Guinea pigs lived to 8 yrs. I gave cod liver oil in couple drops as I believe that helped live longer and more healthy. Plus give them lot of loves and attention too! ❤

When people ask me about guinea pig lifespans, it usually goes like this: Me: Yeah, Phil, my oldest piggy, got diagnosed with severe arthritis and has to get pain meds twice a day. Them: Wow, how old is he? Me: Almost 8 years old. Them: And how long do guinea pigs live on average? Me: About 5-6 years if they're taken care of well. I also mention that genetics plays a factor, as I've lost a guinea pig at almost 4 years old due to recurring bladder stones (the vet said his bladder was abnormally-shaped and suspected that played a part), and I lost a guinea pig at 3ish years who had inbreeding in his history to a stroke (the vet said after doing a post-mortem exam that no amount of heart meds would have helped with how bad his heart was).

I had on your shirt. The guy asked if they were my kids. I said no. I then told him my eldest daughter 30. My youngest is 23. I told him how good your information is. He got a daughter a guinea pig. 5:07 this section of the video made me want to just rant a little about that particular question. I’ve had people who would take me to Petsmart to go buy pet food for my guinea pigs They would ask that question, what kind of pets do I have; you got hamsters? Rabbits? And I told then I have two guinea pigs. and some people are cool and want to know about them other people ask the main two questions which is how long do they usually live and why do you want “rats” in your house? it pisses me off every single time when someone calls them rats or says that they’ll eat my guinea pigs. Want to see them in a stew or some sort of meal. It’s INCREDIBLY DISRESPECTFUL. What if I showed up to your house and saw your cat or dog and told you “they’ll make some good pot stickers.” Or straight up say “ I’d like to skin em” It’s like if you have any other pet that’s not a cat or dog to these people your pet is irrelevant. I am a 24-year-old woman I have no children. My guinea pigs are my life and they make me happy.

I have found that the reason most people ask me "how long do pigs live" is because they can't believe a person my age would spend so much for an animal "that only lives a year or so." They are genuinely shocked that piggies have a life span equal to a big dog. I tell them the average is 5 years but they can live up to 15 years with proper care.

Usually people that ask me what their life span is start with the fact that they are considering getting a guinea pig. To that I usually start with "you need more than one". We have 5 pigs and our young adult daughter has 2 and they are all related, so the most commonly asked question is why so many, to that I say "it was an accident that happened before we got our 2 young girls". Then they find out more than they wanted to know about our little pig family! So the life span part is generally a side bar.

My reply to 'how long do they live?' Is: the average life span is 4-6/5-7 years BUT so many factors play a part in how long a Guinea Pigs live. Such a housing, diet, genetics.

My oldest male will be 5 in September I also.have two of his sisters and a previous sister and brother from earlier liter that will be 5 in June. Dad died June before turning 3 in August mom around 3. So so happy their still with us and doing so good. Bad breeder we got them from.

My partner, almost 40 years old, male, really likes our piggies, especially Chirpy, the young skinny girl. Yeah they are not the classic masculine animals but thankfully in the last like ten years this stigma is slowly disappearing. I know on local facebook groups several men who loves rabbits and there are many men in the Guinea pig fb group too.

My Boars got 5 and 9. Tongue Cancer and old Age.. Regular First Time Owner Pet Shop Pair. So not ideal. Always good Hay, Vet Care and fresh Food. The Cancer Issue was over in Days. He couldn't eat and it was unresponsive to Treatment so he got down from 1,2 kg to triple Digits in short Time. His Brother lost Sight due Glaucoma on both Sides, fit and happy singing for Food he got his worst Eye removed with Age 7 to prevent Injury or Rupture. He didn't care and ate trough 2 more Summer Gras Seasons. Some pure Breeds or Giants i would put at 4-6 but regular Muds? 6-9.. with Extremes above 10. With proper Diet and Vet Care. One other odd Thing about our 2. They never drank much Water. We where dumb enough to let our Gourmets get used to 'drink' Cucumber instead...💀 expensive Idioty. No Issue for them miraculously.🥴 They always! had some.😂

Yes, people ask me what their lifespan could be, primarily because friends want me to stay over, go away for a weekend and I can't. Yes i can board them at my local rescue with planning ahead, but no impromptu trips. So I believe they're asking me so as to understand how long I will be committed.. Theres no way I could disappear overnight as it would mess up our routine.

Most of mine lived to 7 or 8 1/2 and even a 9 year old I had a vet tell me that a 4 year old piggie should be euthanized because she was ill she recovered with some antibiotics so much misinformation about these little friends

Bangle is so gorgeous ❤. I think guinea pigs are more suited to adults anyway. Kids can lose interest. It annoys me when people think guinea pigs are a good 'starter pet'

While I do have two daughters, my 6 skinny pigs have health insurance, live in my home (in luxury), stockings and gifts at Christmas, birthday parties etc. I cook for them, wash their “diapers” (fleece pads), go shopping weekly for veggies, clean their butts, they too are my children (as well as my two rescued dogs, 6 former feral cats, and an opossum). My oldest now 20, once got mad at me when she was younger and said “you love the guinea pigs more than us!” 😂

Why DO people ask how long a particular animal typically lives? I suppose for myself, I ask so I know how long that animal will be with that family. 🤔 I hope those that are adopting ask this so they know how long they will have to spoil the animal! I do get asked that but I assume it's because they are interested in maybe having guinea pigs and are worried that maybe they don't live as long as they'd hope. Most people are surprized at the answer and had thought they maybe only lived 3 or 4 years. I think they just think they are big hamsters!

Hey Scotty! I was originally hoping I could contact you but I can never put the right email XD. But you said something at 0:24 something that striked me, I hate to ask if this is more personal, but do you have autism? I'm autistic, and in my case is why I dont connect with humans but with guinea pigs social wise! The real question they are trying to ask, imo, is "how big of a commitment is that?"

Good point, but the truth should be whether it is a small animal with a short lifespan or a larger animal with a longer life span they all deserve healthcare safety and security and love.
