In this free guitar lesson, you get to know the best way to learn guitar notes on the fretboard. You focus on guitar string notes along the 6th and 5th strings, then track the rest of the guitar neck notes using octave shapes. You learn how the natural guitar fretboard notes are laid out, and then fill in the spaces in between with sharp and flat notes. You see how fretboard notes create the most basic type of music intervals, whole steps and half steps. You discover when to call guitar notes sharp and when to call guitar notes flat.
Notes on the 5th string 2:30
Notes on the 6th string 9:39
Sharp and Flat notes 14:13
Octave notes 17:54

I'm kind of the opposite. I've monkeyed around with guitar for a long time. And I took music theory in college. But until the pandemic I never learned the fretboard and couldn't connect it with any theory. I don't know when Desi teaches triads. But learning them on the first three strings completely changed my understanding. For example, the open C triad is So-Do-Me or 5-1-3 or 5-Root-3 or G-C-E. Only the second string is fretted on the first fret. Knowing the roots (this lesson) using octaves and shapes (D, A, and F) opens up the fretboard. Amazing.

Good video. One thing to point out is that although E-F and B-C are always a half step from each other, that cluster shifts at the 5th fret. Usually the E-F sit directly above B-C (like a box shape.) Only at the 5th fret, the "B" (of B-C) starts at the 4th fret. Any insights into that tonal shift would be helpful. I've noticed it a lot with chords, modes, scales and also simply when tuning the guitar manually. Even on the open strings of E A D G B E I noticed the intervals between those notes is not all even which probably has something to do with it.
@desisernaguitar
@desisernaguitar 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, David. I’m not following you completely. I think what you’re experiencing is the unique way identical pitches can be played in more than one position on the guitar. For example, you can play B and C at frets 2 and 3 on the 5th string. You can play the very same pitches on string 6 at frets 7 and 8. When you mentioned the relationship between B and C to E and F you may have not taken into consideration that E and F are transposed up an octave when you play them at frets 7 and 8 on the 5th string which is why the notes are positioned differently to B and C which have not changed octaves.
@MOAB-UT
@MOAB-UT 3 жыл бұрын
@@desisernaguitar So you are saying that e.g., the E&F at frets 7&8 are an octave higher than their 6th string counterparts. That makes sense but what I was pointing out was that if you physically look at the fretboard at EF and BC, you will always see that cluster together like a four pointed box. E before F and one string above B and C, except at the 5th fret. You will find E F (E at the 5th fret, F on 6tth 2nd string) but below it, B is on the 4th fret (not the 5th) so it's shifted down a half step for some reason. Does this have something to do with octaves? If you are still not following- print out a fretboard diagram with the notes- circle everywhere you see EF and BC. It will quickly become obvious.
@desisernaguitar
@desisernaguitar 3 жыл бұрын
@@MOAB-UT You still see the EF and BC cluster together like a four pointed box in the 7th position. EF are on string 5 and BC are on string 4 at frets 9 and 10 one octave higher than BC on string 6 at frets 7 and 8.
@MOAB-UT
@MOAB-UT 3 жыл бұрын
@@desisernaguitar I am just sharing my observation of what exists on the fretboard. I don't really have a point- just sharing and also inquiring why it shifts around fret 5. Without trying to beleaguer my point, there is a tight cluster relationship of E&F sitting directly above the B&C, respectively at no less than eight (8) places on the neck- more places than I think you are seeing. Again, it's much easier to see if you print out a fretboard and circle the spots. At the 3rd string, 4th fret the B (and C) is the single spot where those notes are shifted down the neck one half step. I believe the guitar is tuned this way to simply make it easier to play chords in standard tuning- otherwise you would have to stretch a full fret to achieve the same chords (especially with open strings.) When you tune it, you shift down at that spot. I am referring to the tuning of the G string (5th string.) I was simply pointing it out because I find it interesting. I don't have a big point to make here- but I do appreciate hearing your thoughts and have enjoyed watching a few of your lessons. You are a very talented instructor. Thank you.

I used my years of engineering and pattern recognition to make life easy. 10:22 1) Memorize the 6th string Natural Notes (EF G A BC D E). 2) Memorize "BEAD GCF." 3) As you are going up the strings, when you hit the 2nd string, move 1 fret up. 4) As you are going up the strings, at the end of F (on BEAD GCF), move 1 fret up. 5) This pattern only applies between 0-10 fret and 12-22 fret.

The notes after the 12th fret are the same as the notes from the open strings. All the open string notes repeat at the 12th fret. the 6th string open is E and also E an octave higher at the 12th fret and so on. Likewise, the dots after the 12th fret are the same notes as the dots after the open strings. The note at the 3rd fret of the 6th string where you have your first inlay marker is G. The note at the first inlay marker past the 12th is G an octave higher and so on.
